A number of industrial structures (and a few residential buildings) use see-through deck plating as a way to reduce weight.
Unfortunately 99.9% percent of kits use solid sheet styrene to represent the deck plate. Anybody know where I can pick up sheets a couple inches wide. I would prefer aluminum or brass for strength, so it holds up under it's own weight.
I should mention that I do HO scale.

A very fine metalic mesh is used in the grounds basket of some automatic coffee makers, Look around at Goodwill or Savation Army.

The only places that come to mind are Plastruct of course, they may have something like your extruded metal in their inventory or perhaps try www.mcmaster.com I used to buy a lot of specialty metals from them for construction of scientific lab equipment so they may have what your looking for.
Searching for "brass mesh" at Walthers.com turned up a dozen or more varieties.

You're probably talking about bar grating, which is very common in industrial facilities. The Plano product mentioned earlier is very close, but doesn't look quite right to me. Its made with the crossbars thicker than the bearing bars. Tichy has a platform with accurate grating, however it's small (only 3'x20') and the bottom has supports molded integrally into it. I've filed off the supports to get correct grating for one project, but it was a lot of work.
