Will, <br />I think the idea of mortising out a notch for the Tortoise and gluing a piece of wood in place to support the Tortoise is the way to go. You should try to keep the depth of the Tortoise around the 1" mark. For the hole, I've found that two 5/16" or 3/8" holes side by side and parallel to the throw bar works better that just one round hole.
