Analog Layout Construction
Posted by Kamil on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 2:40 PM
Hi everyone,I'm a model railroader, living in Ankara, Turkey.Starting from 2006, I'm trying to buid up an analog DC layout which in fact represents important stages and unreached wishes of my 41 years life:

I've also completed a turntable construction http://marsandizankara.page.tl/Home.htm and I'm proceeding forward with building the depot.

So, nice to meet you here and I hope to broaden my model railroading view in trains.com especially at the scenery building stage.

 Hi, and welcome!

I'm pretty new myself (see my post count!) and it didn't take long to find it's a fascinating place with plenty of great tips and tricks.

Welcome aboard!

Will you be modelling a Turkish prototype railroad?  I hope you will keep us informed with your progress.  It's not an area we see very many railroad pictures of.

 Welcome aboard,

What is the scale of your analog layout ?    We are always glad to give and exchange ideas.  If possible, send us a picture of your layout.  In what room of your house is the layout located ?  I was one of the lucky ones, who built the 24' x 24' garage loft, (with an inside stairway), dedicated strictly to my layout.  But, I live in Michigan, and today it got too cold to work on the DCC wiring of the layout.  Tomorrow, I will have an electrician coming to add circuits, so that I can install a few electrical heaters.  Feel free to ask questions, or to give advice.   Bob Hahn

Welcome. I'm in the southern US in central Louisiana. I model in HO Scale on a DCC layout that measures roughly 8 x 10 feet. That would be about 2.44 x 3 meters in metric.

Welcome aboard from Lilburn, GA, USA! Just based on what you have posted so far, you seem to be off to a good start and have a good plan for what you are doing. I am about your same age (42) and just started building my first permanent layout this summer, so I know the exact enjoyment that you are feeling right now! Jamie

The answer to the first question may be a little deep one. I think I will actually be modelling my life. A series of scenes were arranged in a system to represent important stages, crossroads and chilhood dreams of my past. The models and buildings are all selected from Turkish railways . Please see the details below. It would be nice to start with the phantasrail website in order to see Alan Short’s beautiful pictures of Turkish railways, covering 1980’s:

The scale of my analog layout layout is HO. I’m living in an apartment, I have three rooms and my layout is located in the workroom. The dimensions are:

A few more pictures can be seen below. The station, the turntable and the locohouse area:The yard:And, the shadow station:Every section on the layout is designed to feed the main scene, the small station. That’s because stations played a very important role in my life. Yes, this is a great enjoyment!

Thanks, It took 1.5 years to complete the turntable but it is still unpainted. As can be seen on the website, I designed the main parts on the computer but the rest is constructed by using a “Lego building logic”. The only difference here is that I built the bricks by myself.Nice to meet you here!Kamil   --------Links:Detailed information about Turkish State Railways (in English):http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_State_Railways The official website of Turkish State Railways (in English):http://www.tcdd.gov.tr/tcdding/index.htm

Electrical connections of the multi-block triangle is completed:

Five locomotives entering into the triangle (this is only for demonstration purpose, reality was not considered)

Same locomotives leaving the triangle:

A short freight train, changing direction on the triangle:

And, a longer movie:

Notes:
The surrounding light in the movies are a little dim, I'm sorry about this
Locomotives in some movies move fast in order to shorten the movie time
Bodies of some locomotives were removed to show that there is no decoder inside.

Hello and welcome. I lived in Ankara from 1964 - 1968. Lived in the Hotel Pinar for about 6 - 8 months before moving to some star shaped apartments out on the highway. The hotel Pinar at that time was around the corner from the office Bldg. that USAF headquarters was located in, and was right across the street from the (a) train station. I was 10 years old at the time and would sit in the window and watch steam freights and passenger trains all day. a special treat would be the streamliner that would come through maybe once in the morning and going back the other way at night.......

I am very impressed with all of your work. Instead of you asking us questions, i think we should be the ones asking the questions.....SUPER JOB... keep up the good work

I'm impressed with the turntable, actually the whole layout. If you don't mind me asking, is that skill level part of your professional background? I'm new at the hobby also, and have tried several different ways of building things. Some work some don't. Your work looks great.  Big Smile

Hello and nice to meet you here,I was born in Milan, in 1967 so when you were in Ankara, I was living in Milan. We passed to Ankara in 1970 and since than I am living there. I think hotel Pinar still exists today; http://hotels.lonelyplanet.com/hotel/Ankara-Otel-Pinar-P1000406893.html

However, I am not sure that the main station is still visible from that hotel because Ankara has changed dramatically since than (4.5 million population now).

If the star shaped apartments are the ones below, I was there for some visits during 1980's, and today they are placed in a very crowded part of the city center:

Anyway, everything has changed except the steam locomotives, they are still there  Jhttp://ankaragar.tripod.com/id2.htmlThe train you mentioned is probably the “Ankara Express” which is also active today. The train is composed with sleeping cars so; departing at night and arriving in the morning may fit your observations. The route is Ankara-Istanbul-Ankara. Generally, the passengers are tourists. I am sorry to say that the locomotives today are diesel or electric ones. I consider myself as a “learner forever” so it would be very nice to share and exchange ideas here. If you find something useful about my work, I would be glad to answer.

Thank you, by your words, I am motivated to do so.

My answer is yes, I was graduated as a patternmaker (building models for foundry industry) and although constructing a layout is not the same thing, this proficiency helps me in woodworking. During last two years time I tried to improve my other skills such as constructing a multi-block analog system (my childhood dream), working with flexible tracks, and as you already know, scratch building. These were all a mystery to me in 2005.
