Started out on the NYC in 1955 as a Fireman at the ripe age of 16. My job entailed stroking the fire on the Steam Crane that was kept at the Rochester NY Atlantic Ave Yard. I worked after school and every weekend for 6 months. I also saw time working the "Yard" on a Diesel. Only thing to do was turn the oil filters and make sure the Water Jug was full. I had the opportunity to Engineer a Passenger consist from Rochester to Syracuse after it's engine failed. My Engineer was proud of me as I made the coupling without anyone feeling it.  (Just luck and a Great Brakeman). Made the 54 miles in under a hour and 6 minutes ahead of schedule. I joined the Army in August 55 and stayed for 22 years. Upon retirement, I again worked for a Railroad at TrailerTrain in North Augusta SC for 11 years.
