I've lived and worked in Africa for more than forty years, mainly Sudan and South Sudan, but also Uganda, Egypt, South Africa and now Kenya. My work has been with the church, but my hobby (passion? obsession?) is railways. In South Africa I qualified as a fireman and driver on heritage steam locomotives, and I am a volunteer at the Nairobi Railway Museum and I help to operate the museum's three working steam locos on the rare occasions when we run them. I am currently building a OO/HO scale model railway layout in a forty foot shipping container, trying to capture the atmosphere of Africa and its railways in the 1960s and '70s. I post updates and photos at http://friendsoftherail.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=365 on the Friends of the Rail Forum, of which I am a moderator.
