I have been an HO modeler for 35 years. My layout is 14'X26'. I model the southeastern coal fields. I mostly run steam, but I also run 1st generation diesel. 

 I lived there for several years. As a young boy, I lived along the N&W railroad through the1950's. The N&W ran steam locos until 1959. Some of my family worked on the N&W.
