I have been modelling railways since 1966, starting in my teens. I model the NSWGR (New South Wales Government Railways, Australia) and the time period is late 1965 during the transition era from steam to diesel. My layout is set in the upper Hunter Valley and represents my interpretation of a line that was partially built then abandoned in the late 1940's (to be re-built and opened in the early 1980's to extract coal from the area).
