Gentlemen;

I am a well educated sophisticated world traveller and I normally don't use much "Strine" or Australian slang. However i do so a lot on this forum so that I want to let you Yanks know that there are other peoples in the world; and we all have our "ins and outs" and you are not by yourselves in that direction.

"Bloke" as they said is really how you use "guys" but particularly applies to men as well though it can include women, girls, boys or any group of people that we are friendly with, it is not derogatory at all . My terminology is not only Australian but more specifically "Sydney" as that is where i lived for 60 years, so guess something had to rub off.

Many people in my age group think we are becoming too Americanised and are losing our true Aussie identity, which would be a great shame. I am referring particularly to the inhabitants of two Australian states, NSW (New South Wales) from which I come and Queensland, where i now live.

This Americanisation all started during WW 2 and has got slowly more and more, we used to be pretty British once though.

For instance we always called chips, chips and poultry chooks, we now call chooks chickens and we are slowly starting to call chips, French Fries and this is a big pity.

Regards Ian
