On30 in the garden?

A search yielded no threads on this. Has no one tried it? Seems like a good combination if the trackwork holds up.

You can get a nice logging route in a small space with a Bachmann Shay and some scratchbuilt wood buildings. Or maybe a small quarry line with a Porter and some side dumps.

Willrothfuss, I 've never seen a post if anyone has done it. However if Bachmann On30 track is anything like their G track I'd say no. But the prices are really tempting!!!
Reasearch the track thing and educate us on this Idea, I'm interested in your findings.

Peco makes track for On30. I wouldn't use the Bachmann track. I guess I'll have to test it out this summer.

Peco can be found on www.peco-uk.com and they have a map of american outlets. The rail is nickel silver but not sure about the sleepers for UV, may need painting.

As a long time On30 modeler (and very short time Fn3 modeler), I would say this might be doable assuming you were very careful about track and locomotive maintanance. I have only had my "garden railroad" for a few months now, but I can't imagine anyone in our local climate trying to run trains outdoors without using battery power and R/C control. I realize in warmer, drier climates track power is probably very reliable, but this applies to heavy G scale equipment that has a large power pickup footprint. Keep in mind the On30 models don't weigh all that much, and don't pickup power as reliably as the larger models do. I have several smaller On30 models like the Spectrum 0-4-0 and 0-4-2 that are terrible in this regard, even on spotlessly clean track.

The other concern would be towards the models themselves. In the short time I have been running models outdoors, I can't believe the stuff they pickup in the side rods, wheels and other areas. Things like leaves, dog hair and small twigs seem to be attracted to small black things that go chuff chuff. I've pulled debris out of my Spectrum 2-8-0 that would surely dismantle an On30 sized model... [;)]

Again if you were very cautious with your track cleanliness you might get away with it. I for one couldn't imagine any of my On30 models in the garden. I've just spent too much time making them run smoothly indoors to take them outside and have an errant twig catch a moving part and bend something. Just my two cents worth.

I've seen articles in some of the British magazines of garden railways all the way down to N scale. Since your On30 is on HO track you shouldn't have too much trouble. There were quite a few HO garden pikes. I see Peco was mentioned, from what I've heard the Peco is UV resistant.

I've run it on my deck thru the summer. And am having thoughts of putting it out there permanent! As Jef said you would have to have very good track. On the ground? UMMM!!
