Advise on what paint to use for Pola Buildings
Posted by simben30 on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 8:35 PM

Hi all,

I have a G scale pola building that I would like to paint with our own colours and decorate,  could any one advise on the best type of paint to use as this building will be placed outside in our garden railway in Melbourne (Australia).

I was thinking a primer would need to be used to start off with,  followed by the selected colour, and then maybe a clear finish to protect it. Would this be oiled based or water based paints, and should the use of house exteria paints be used or model paints

Thank you in advance

Painting Pola buildings (and all others) begins with a bath. Warm soapy water and a clear rinse. Just before the mold is used to produce the building it is sprayed with a mold release agent. Basically an oil based product. The manufacturer does NOT wash the release agent off their product. If you do not wash it off you will see your paint flake off in large chunks during seasonal temperature changes.

Once the plastic is cleaned a good base coat (or primer) can be applied, one that is designed for plastics, like Krylon's Fusion line of spray paint.

I have buildings that were painted in this manner that have served well for over 12 years (San Diego County) in a semi-desert area,

forgot this part:

Once you have a plastic compatible "FLAT" base coat (or primer coat) applied, most any type of paint can be used.
