  Information found on www.steamlocomotive.com  ---

The Union Pacific took delivery of 105 Challenger Class Locomotives between 1936 and 1944.    They were built in 5 sub-classes, they were designed as Coal Burners.

#3800 to 3814 were converted to burn Oil in 1944.   8 of them were converted back to Coal in 1950, and then back to Oil the same year.  #3815 was converted to Oil in 1942.

#3834 to 3839 were delivered for Passenger Service and converted to Oil when delevered in 1937.   It also states that #3975 to 3984 were converted to Oil in 1952.  It appears series numbers keep changing between 3700, 3800, and 3900 depending on Oil conversion and modifications.
