Happy New Year, all.

Fighting a kitchen faucet with a leaky gland seal today.  Finally got the valve out and the cartridge out.  Hopefully, somebody in town has one in stock.

Had to heavily modify a socket to get the valve loose.  Was using my die grinder to do this when my air compressor seized up.  Disappointing, but it is a compressor I bought used some 35 to 40 years ago.  Was far from new when I got it. I've got to see if parts are still available before I make the repair/replace decision.

On the other hand, I have wanted a larger compressor for quite some time.  This might be an excuse to get one.

On train related front, I have decided that I want to obtain a 2000 series Alco with some of my 2024 train budget.  Any suggestions as to which one?

Good Morning and Happy New Year -

Been having real issues trying to get in here.  Seems like I'm not the only one.....

Rocky start to 2024 as we said good bye to my great aunt - 94 years young.

Still trying to get moved out of Mom's house.  A more concerted effort is coming, spent the week between Christmas and New Years trying to keep Jenni wee as she had the flu.

Hope everyone has a healthy and prosperous New Year.

PS - I'm gonna be a grandfather in March!!

Aloha and Happy Newest Year! I had some challenges logging in too. Congratulations on your good news, Rich!
8n, that is some good use out of the compressor. How about one of the Lionel's S-2 switchers?

Good to see most had a great holiday,

Rich, congrats on the grandlid, we have 7 now and one great-great grandson. Talk about a Christmas drain on the money hole. Stick out tongue

I got a very nice Menards Well car from the son's kids but boy is it big. I was worried about that and passed on it when I saw it in the store and when I got it I found out I was correct. It would not clear the tunnel opening, hit the 315 Truss bridge top, Lionel transfer station roof, or make it around the Marx 34" half turn without hitting the IR gate crossing reader. It is way bigger than the Lionel well car I have and would look weird on the same consist. Their covered car hauller is just as big so I had to pass on that as well. Crying So I returned it and picked up a nice smaller pair of Menards flat cars, one with a trailer on it and the other with the trailer's tractor. They worked fine. Weather has been way to warm for this time of year but I will take it.

8N I would be lost with out my compressor. When we built this place I up sized from my old Sears 3HP 30 Gallon one from 1980 to a new IR 5HP two stage 175psi 60 Gal one. Way better, even if I have only used at about a tenth of what I used the old one. Smile

Be good.

Congratulations anjdevel.  That your first grandchild?

It is my understanding that the 2000 series Alcos and the S-2s use common drive train parts.  So, yes, an S-2 might be on my shopping list as well.

By the way, what the heck is a B, E, & C biscut?

Bacon, egg, and cheese.  Makes sense. Then again, I'm not a member of an old guy's every morning coffee clutch group at the local Mc Donald's.

Being a Yankee, I will enthusiastically say that a B, E & C biscut is infinitely better than grits!

McDonalds B,E,&C Biscuits sucks. Hardy's or Bojangles in my view make the best for resturants, but I make my own.

Good Morning

Sunny now - rain and slush tomorrow afternoon and into Sunday, I hate shoveling snow.

Cleaned up the Christmas Tree lot at the firehouse last night, all the racks are put away until next November.  Did some running around afterwards, a little NY Electric Trains sale watching then off to bed.

I'll have to evaluate what I need to get done, working around the weather.  The Magnum is still getting the engine cradle replaced, so that is unavailable.  With the open bed on the Ram, I don't want stuff exposed to the dampness.

Fife - Not gonna get a "special" set for him - he's in line to inherit the "empire", lol.  All that you see is yours, young Ellis.......

Nice to see I didn't have to fight to get in here, for once....

Yikes!  Reminds me of the Egg McMuffin, the first time I had one of those I gagged on it!  Ick!  No disrespect intended to those who love 'em.

I REALLY liked Burger King's Bacon Croissandwich though, very tasty!

Went to the local diner this morning and had a Columbian for breakfast.  That is a medley of 3 eggs, green peppers, jalipinos, onions, sausage, bacon, and ham.  Better than B, E, & C.

The FIRST Robotics season kicked off today.  The 2024 game looks pretty interesting.

The local high school has a sizeable program that competes in this series.  I am a mentor on the team.  We have about 7 weeks to design, build, and develop a robot for our first of three competition meets this year.

That's right Becky, yesterday was Twelfth Night.

Which means it's "officially" OK to take down the Christmas decorations.

Okay who left the freezer door open.

16* with a high of 41* Friday - Sunday doesn't really look any better.

Today I plan on working on some of my standard gauge passenger cars, ie install windows, window treatments and rewire as needed. The dark green cars are what I'm talking about. There from 1926 - 1930 time period. so 96 to 98 years old. About time to give them some TLC.

Hope all have a good day.

Okay who left the freezer door open.

I hear you!  It was 17 degrees this morning, VERY unusual for the Richmond VA area!  It's supposed to go up to the mid-30's later today, then the 40's tomorrow.  Could be worse, a friend up in Canada (Anyone remember Miningman from the "Trains" and "Classic Trains" Forums?) tells me it's 30 below zero in his neck of the woods!  OUCH!

Anyway, we've got a Greenberg train show coming up here this weekend, I hope the weather doesn't make things tough for the exhibitors trying to get here.

Flint - Hopefully your version of Greenberg's is better than Baltimore's, which has become pathetic. There's another local-to-me show on Feb 10, at the Washington Co Ag Center.

The only way I know to log off from this site is to clear your cache but then you need to relog into anything you normally don't and most likely places like your banking, you will have to either by text or phone call comfirm it's you as it won't reconise your computer.

It's been pretty good for the past few years assuming the vagaries of winter weather not making it difficult for exhibitors to get here.  But I wouldn't come all the way down from where you live in MD 'Fife, it's not THAT good. An hour and a half, maybe two hours, and you're done.

The "Gold Standard" for any Greenberg show I've been to is the one in Edison NJ, absolutely their best. It seems to draw exhibitors from all over the Northeast.  The Orange Hall at the TCA's York show is a good comparison to the Edison show.

Everyone familiar with the Dakman's train show videos?  Just in case you're not here's his YouTube channel.

https://www.youtube.com/c/USATGScale/videos

Shawn travels all over visiting various train shows and making videos of the same.  They're quite enjoyable, almost like being there.  He's a frequent visitor to Greenberg's Edison show.

Not much going on here at the moment, I did pre-order a couple of items from Lionel's 2024 volume 1 catalog, but I'm really trying to stick things out until March when the Piedmont Division Model Train Show in Cartersville, Georgia happens.

Just checking in, I did go to the basement and dust the train layout today, been a week below 0 or close. They say temps tomorrow should break. Yeah SJ you got to clear your broswing history and cache to get out of this place. I just do it after posting and you only need to do one hours worth, if you do it as soon as you get done posting and you will not loose all that other stuff Bill was talking about. Wink The place is still not safe to be on either. Angry

Oh well stay warm.

It's getting there.  Wink  I decided to base my depot on the Union Depot that stood at the Cincinnati Northern and Nickel Plate junction in Latty, Paulding county, Ohio.

It has simple architectural details which is important to me because I've decided to build the station using only materials I have on hand.  Unfortunately that also means I can't print anything with my computer because I don't have enough toner.

So it's going to be a hand drawn structure, made, as you might expect, mostly from cardstock.  The drawings above are on the cardboard backing from a large pad of watercolor paper.  They'll make up the core of the structure and I'll be attempting to make 3 kinds of siding from strips of cardstock.  I'll fashion the windows and doors from cardstock as well as all the trim with the probable exclusion of the gingerbready details and filigrees Nickel Plate stations of the era had.

That's a very classic old very "railroady" looking station!  From the way the two  men in the first photo are dressed I'm guessing the shot dates from the first decade of the 20th Century. Thanks for the shots!

RT, think you did not read my post. I said if you only clear one hours worth of history and cache and have not had your bank open or used in that hour it will not ask you to ID yourself next time you go back to the bank.. If you stay looged into your bank it will and if you clear all time history and cache it will. I log out of everything when I am done!

Weather has turned to slop. 222.7 hours below freezing with a foot of snow and now in the high 30s. What a mess.Hmm

That will be a nice station Beckey! Yes

Well the Richmond Greenberg show's come and gone.  It was fun as usual and even though I didn't get a lot of stuff I did get this:

https://www.tandem-associates.com/lionel/lionel_trains_2046_loco.htm

Yep, a 1951 Lionel 2046!  Just what I was looking for to do another Hudson to Pacific conversion.  Don't worry, it's not a "mint" example, there's quite a bit of wear on the paint and the side rods are pretty dull.  I had to do a bit of "resurrection" work on it when I got home but nothing too serious.  Clean the motor, lube all around (Wow!  Was it dry!) and now it runs like a deer!  Smokes like crazy too!  The whistle tender called for a bit of cleaning and lubing as well.

Anyway, this one's going to be turned into a Richmond, Frederickburg & Potomac locomotive as soon as it gets warm enough to paint out in the "Chugger Barn."  But for now it'll be run as is.

SJ to do so you need to clear your cache, now Kevin says all you have to do is clear the last hour, so I haven't look but there is an setting to do just the last hour instead of all of it. I'm sure charlie or one of your kids would know how.

Maybe the only way off. The customer service lady didn't know how or even who can do it. So I'm waiting.

It sure worked for Spank, although I'm sure that wasn't his intention.

Jeez, I sure miss Spanky!

Evening,

I ordered a Canadian National Railway heritage T-shirt on eBay (it has CN and locomotives/logos of railroads that merged into their system). I will wear it and my CN engineer hat to the Piedmont Division Model Train Show in Cartersville, GA in March!

Yes

Got my Nova back today, still needs some work in future but it's good for now, Either odometer cable or the odometer period. It seems it slips off a little but not enough to effect it other than making a clicking sound.

I plan to swap the motor out anyway in a year or so.

42* going to 54*

Not much planned for today, Tomorrow is the big day :)

Do need to goto HD or Lowes and look at indoor/outdoor carpet. Maybe get keys while there.

Otherwise not much going on here. Happy hump day all.

Happy February first all. It's up to you all, but the amount of post aren't that many a month now, I suggest to go back to at least a new coffee pot once a year.

Not much going on here.

The cable to the odometer on the Nova was not making any noise when I took it for gas and a short ride yesterday, so who knows, will have to wait and see.

Hope all have a good day. 69th birthday for me today.

Nope.

I know a few years ago OGR was trying but guess they had no takers, what a shame, that would of been a improvement over present ownership.

I'd rather go back to the days when I considered myself lucky if something O, S or Standard gauge showed up in MR rather than see CTT in non railfan hands.

Well, I pulled the trigger and ordered a set of Harry Potter coaches last week.  Also ordered the Halloween version of the new Lionchief 2-4-2 steam locomotive.  That pretty much uses up the 2024 train budget.

After asking politely three different ways to be removed from this forum, you can see I'm still here. Apparently trash talking is the only way out. I bet they can do that in a hurry. Don't talk to me about cookies, someone has to know how to do this.

I've received two Blu-ray's recently. One about Train Mountain in Oregon (The 2022 Triennieal) and one about the Canton St. Paul and Pacific live steam railroad.

Other than that, not much trainwise going on.

Mornin' folks. Sunny and rather mild in the Potomac Highlands. Taking advantage of the nice weather and working around Fifedom. Headed to the Washington County Ag Center (just north of Antietam) for the train show tomorrow morning.

If you like your train watching with a little pizzazz, check out this live cam between 6-9pm. It's the Norfolk Southern mainline through Johnstown, PA.

This forum is so dead. But trying to get removed from it. Good luck. The CTT editor didn't even return my Email. There is no opt out provision. It says you have to call customer service. She said would call back in 2 days that was about 12 days ago. A nice way to treat a loooong time subscriber.

Thought I would check in to see what is up. I see SJ still can't find his way out. Also his plesent look on life seems about the same. As for me I just have not been doing much with the trains. Many reasons but nothing special.

Two years ago in about two hours I tried to remove my right foot from my leg. What a ride that has been. Being able to walk as well as I can is a true blessing and I thank GOD for that. I am too old to be a grump, just don't have time for that. I also think there is no hope for CTT and I won't go into my thoughts because no one cares anymore about mine than I do about theirs. Wink

My son and his wife and boy came by yesterday and we all went to lunch at a nice little bar and grill in Seneca IL. Man what used to cost $6.99 three years ago was $17.00 now, Five for lunch was $108 and then a 20% tip. No wonder we eat at home. It was nice to get out, I will give it that. Smile

So for now I will be looking for the weather to break and getting some more outside time with what time GOD gives me.

Sure miss the good old days of this place but as with everything nothing last forever. RIP to all those that have passed.

Later.

Got really neat news from the doctor's office this morning - the bug my wife and I have has a name.  Influenza A.  Surprise me, because we are not seeing the high temps - probably courtesy of this year's flue shots.

On the up side of this, it has given me a chance of perusing the Lionel 2024 big book that Charles Ro packed in with the  4 Hogwores coaches that were delivered recently.  The cars are nice.  They have LED lighting that will be interesting to see how it works.

Was considering a 20th anniversay Polar Express Berkshire and coach.  Then I noticed that the 20th anniversary PE set was about $100 cheaper than the separate purchase items.  Makes one think.

Those triplexes are neat - way out of my price range - but neat.  As usual, there a few other items of interest.  Maybe yes or maybe no

Morning all.

I see Fife was up early this morning :)

35* going to 53* today, then low 40's all day tomorrow.

Taking car ( 1972 Nova ) to a closer shop to me, today to see what needs to be done about a transmission fluid leak. :( always something.

Need to see if local Ace hardware has two 10-32 x3/8" to hang my motors in my 408E. If not HD or Lowes is next. I want to get that back together and on the shelf.

Won another set of 418, 419, & 490 passenger cars last night. I need the 6 wheel trucks off of one so I can use them on my orange 418 I'm painting. wanted to finish painting that yesterday as it was suppose to be 70* but with rain that didn't work. :( Monday or Tuesday next week looks to be a good chance. Want to get that finished also. My bright green for doors and window trim is not a match to the other cars but close, heck even the orange is off somewhat. But it will look good I believe, and if someone has a problem it's easy, it's not yours :)

Hope all have a good day.

I've been kinda-sorta-maybe thinking about getting a Harry Potter set to run in front of the house on Halloween when the kids come Trick-Or-Treating.  I'm not really an 'Arry fan but Lady Firestorm likes the movies.

I'll keep my eye out for one at the shows, I'd prefer an older conventional tranformer control version to the newer LionChief ones. We'll see what happens.

Flint Idea- You'd be wanting Lionel Hallow's Eve version (6-18745). That is what I'd be on the hunt for. Keep in mind that the Hogwarts 4-6-0 is a big shoulders gal, so no curves near tunnels or truss bridges.

I second that Fife, Great looking but a PITA, I had a nice set from my Uncle but that engine refused to travel over my layout with the O27 profile track and refused to cross my O42 switches. I gave the whole set to my grand daughter.

I appreciate the advice gents!  However any temp layout I set up won't have any switches, cross-overs, will have a minimum of 031 curves, and if there's a tunnel it'll be on a straight track.

That 6-18745 engine's interesting but a bit too funereal, if you know what I mean.  I've been to enough damn funerals in the past five years, an aspect of getting older no-one warned me about. Sad

Sorry, I don't mean to bum anyone out.  It's why I got interested in the Harry set, it's got the magic and mystery but without the gloom.

Morning all.

Sunny and 51* goimg to 58* todaay.

No real plans for today. Need to work on clearing the excess off of the train table so I can get ready to put carpet down for appearance.

I got thinking the other day ( yes that can be very dangerous ) my layout is about 3 1/2' off the floor. I know the sound goes down from the table, I plan to put carpet on top to help with the noise some but have always been told that the noise from the track will go down through the screws/nails. I basically have 4' x 4' framing under the plywood. I was wondering what if I stappled carpet to the 4' x 4' framing to like maybe catch the noise inbetween and muffle it from being so loud, Do you think it might work? I may get a little extra to try it in an area.

RT, I used this on top of the table before I installed anything. Put the rool grass on top of it and the layout is very quiet. 1/4" thick.

How does it do for walking on. I have to get up on my table to reach my trains that are on shelves. one side is about 30" wide and the top shelf is about 4' above that. the other side is 4' wide and also top shelf about 4' above table. Looks like an excellant idea otherwise. I'm also thinking maybe betting foam and cut to size of openings underneath and glueing it to bottom of table.

I honestly feel standard gauge is louder than O gauge.

Got 385E #1 with 385W in today. For an engine that is some where between 85 and 91 years old not in to bad shape, needs cleaning up, runs okay, a little slow but a cleaning probably would help that. Needs a spit clean and shine, The whistle in the tender seems to be the best actual standard gauge prewar working whistle. I can actually hear it from oppisite end of train table ( 16' away. ) Still want to open up and clean/lube it. I bought 2 of these one is this prewar, the other is MTH remake conventional and no whistle.

I used Pergo flooring planks, with the thin layer of styrofoam, for sub-roadbed. Turned bottom up, it sufficiently baffled all track noise. I purchased mine at a deep discount from Ollies, especially the packs that were opened up and loose planks.

Easier and neater to jigsaw then plywood. And certainly easy to transport home.

RT I don't walk on the table much but I have and it springs right back.

The key is when installing the track don't screw it down tight. Take it to snug then back it off a half turn and it will hold the track in place and the track ride up and down on the foam as the train passes overhead and not transfer noise through the screws to the table.Wink

Another weird day for March here,,,70 out there

Oh, heck yes!  Just think of it in terms of the special volume of the cars.  The 214 boxcar is a much bigger resonance chamber than a 655. Wink

And a 514 fall inbetween them in size. I do have the larger 200 serries but when running freight I usually run the 500 serries.

Today I had the pleasure (Sad) of having a lumbar puncture, also known as a spinal tap.  Why?  So they could draw off fluid and send it to the Mayo Clinic to see if I have chemical (?) signatures of narcolepsy and/or cataplexy.  MRI tomorrow.  Glowing in the dark on Wednesday.

It's not bad.  I could have lived without the needle in my back though Wink.  My MRI got postponed because they had some emergencies to deal with today so I don't have to do that until Monday.

Hopefully it will go well because I never knew how claustrophobic I was until they tried to squeeze me into a standard MRI machine.  I did an open MRI in 2005 without any problems, but the neurologist I had in 2021 insisted on using the high definition closed MRI machine.  During the first attempt I basically flipped out.  The second time they tried adding Benadryl, but since they didn't have me take it until I was walking towards the machine, it, of course, didn't do anything and I flipped out twice as fast.  The final attempt was under anesthesia but I went into respiratory arrest so they didn't get any data that time either.

This is a different neurologist and she has no problem with me doing an open MRI.  She just would like to be sure there's nothing obvious going on that could be causing my hypersomnia like a tumor or a serious vascular concern.  But since there's no reason to suspect anything like that she's perfectly happy if I can't do the test.

I'm trying all this stuff because after 20 years of guessing it would be nice to have a clear diagnosis and treatment plan.  Wink

I learned I was clastrophobic when I was in Sub school. Not a good place to be going when your clastrophobic.

21 days without a post?  Man, that is unheard of.  A few years back, we used to yak enough that we'd get 21 posts in a couple three hours.

Anyhow, I've got no train news to speak of, so I'll update y'all on one of the things that has been keeping me away from trains.  I am a mentor for the local high school's robotics team.  We've got 50 students on the team and field two robots in competitions.

Last weekend, we attended our third regional competition this year.  Turns out that the junior team won the competition, qualifying them for the world championships.  The Senior team won the first competition we entered six weeks ago, so we are taking both teams to the world championships.

The senior team is rated at #144 in the world and the junior team is rated at #177.  There are about 3500 teams worldwide.

This week, we are testing and tuning both machines to go to the world championships in Houston next.  There will be about 600 teams there.  Both robots are rated in the top 20 out of about 70 teams in each of their respective divisions.  The winners of the 8 divisions will then come together for some ranking rounds, then the final 8 alliance double elimination playoff for the world championship.

I actually looked yesterday but didn't have anything to say really. Not much going on here, bought a 1912 #53 and a few cars from 1906 - 1918 time period. ( two #12,  a 14, 15, & 17 )

Hope all have a good weekend

Afternoon all

Lazy Sunday afternoon, Here is some pics of some of our flowers around our place. Took these pics this afternoon

These will be purple and gold/yellow once opened in next day or so

Cut grass yesterday, cleaned garage out :) now my small utility trailer and the Nova boot fit in there.

Plan to put a shelf above the double window at far end of train room, to store more trains on.

I drove down to Houston for the F.I.R.S.T. Robotics world final last week.  Both the underclass team and the upper class robots on the local high school robotics team I mentor qualified for worlds this year.

There were about 600 teams there competing in 8 divisions of about 75 teams each.  The winners of the 8 devisions then go into an 8 alliance double elimination playoff bracket th determine the World Champions.

The underclass team made it to the finals in their division, but did not win.  Really, a fantastic finish to the season for them.  The underclass team's purpose is to teach the younger students how to design, build, and compete with a robot.  If they do well in competition, that is a bonus.

The upper class team won their division and made it into the finals.  They won the first three matches in the finals, then a loss dropped them into the lower bracket.  They clawed their way into the world finals!  The final match is a best of three series.  They won the first match by about 10 points and the second match by 3 points to become WORLD CHAMPIONS!

The bus got a police escort and a water salute by the fire department when they got home.  Cheerleaders, the pep band, and local dignitaries greeted them as they came off of the bus.  The city is going to place 'Home of Team SCREAM World Champion' signs at the city limits.  There is a meeting scheduled with the governor, and the state legislature is going to pass a resolution about their achievement.  Seems that we are the first team from this state to win the World Championship.

Our goal going into the World Competition was to win our division and get the honor of playing in the finals.  We never expected that we would actually win them!

Yup.  Been a while since I've been able to post here.

The trip I had planned to our Kentucky property got rained out.  The red clay soil was saturated.  Trying to do the dirt work I was planning on would have just made a big mess.

Instead, we went to our Michigan location and started on a 12 x 20 deck project.  That project got interrupted with opening the lake house, installing the dock, and replacing a sump pump and a pressure tank.

I got the rough grading for the deck done and the deck's post holes bored.  Also got the concrete footings poured.

All in all, been too busy for train activity.

Got some bad news today.  The train show in Sedalia Mo.that I have supplied a layout for many times over the last 14 years will not happen this year. We lost the venue.

Bummer.  The last several times I did a layout for them turned out to be about the only time of year that I got to run some of my equipment.

Hi, everyone.

Not doing much lately, train wise, just been taking things one day at a time, doing other things of course. Have seen some pics and video of CP 2816 "The Empress" on its tour, looks pretty good.

I took the 20 minute train ride to downtown today to watch the parade and visit the Pride in the CLE festival.  Had a great time, ate some good food and got slightly burnt walking around the festival grounds in the June sun.

Just found out about the magazine sale.

Haven't logged on in a long time. World's been looking like a scary place, and I've mostly been sticking close to the people I feel safest with.

The website is definitely slower than I remember, even got a 504 bad gateway error when I logged in. Luckily things worked again (eventually) when I refreshed the page. Hoping that a better forum that fully works is part of the plan for the new owners of the magazines.

Becky, I keep thinking about going to a Pride since there's supposed to be some good ones out here but I haven't worked up the courage to check it out yet. Have some friends who regularly go though and have a good time.

Life is busy right now, have a very full week lined up. Siblings all home from school, great to see everybody again.

Some new pieces in the O and HO collection since last writing, and all the standard gauge motive power is up and running again. Latest O gauge challenge is to revive a Generl Models NW2 mechanism and fit it into a shell I've had for years, patiently waiting for something to put in it. On the HO front picked up another 0566 Texas Special ALCo, this time a boxed example. Needs new belts, otherwise just the usual toy train tune up.

Hoping for a nice summer ahead.

Evening,

Today, I did some "Trackwork" on my garage setup, as my Lionel CN Mogul was "skipping" the track on my O-31 curves, so, I ordered some O-42 curves, and that solved that. (O-42 MTH Realtrax,) other than that I helped my dad prepare to take the cover off of the swimming pool, as it's just about warm enough in Georgia to swim in it.

Cleveland's is amazing!  There must have been 100,000 people down there representing every social, ethnic and just about any other demographic you can think of just enjoying each other's company and feeling the love.  I think Cleveland is as diverse as the U.N. but without the fighting Wink

Wow this seems to be flying compared to what it has been. Couldn't get on earlier. For you that are having prblems with the adds, I don't even see them, the reason is I use duckduckgo browser in here. Yes I also have Chrome and edge on my computor. There + and - with duckduckgo.co but for here it saves me from the PIA adds.

The forum is still hit and miss for me.

A friend brought his 1974 Ford skid steer over last Saturday.  We got the stone caps on the brick railing on our 1914 mid Mo. front porch project.  Also got rid of about a yard of dirt that has been piled in our front yard for a long time.

Just 378 more bricks to go to finish off the 3 front porch columns.  Going to be a trick to keep the columns plumb as I lay the bricks.

No train action lately, though.

Not railroad related, well, there is a small train at the zoo but it's not in this video.  Anyways, I finally finished all the editing and stuff for this video.  It's of the Asian Lantern Festival at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo last summer.  I was down at the zoo on Monday and they're already busy setting up for this year festival so I figured I'd better get last year's pics processed before the new one opens.  Wink

Enjoy!  Big Smile

Hey all-

returned home from a short vacation trip on Sunday night. I made a stop at my favorite train place while I was away, and spent some time today unpacking my goodies.
I'm already debating if I did myself well here... on the one hand, I did acquire a piece that has been on the want list for a while, and checks off more than one box for me. On the other hand... condition doesn't get much worse than what I'm working with.
But hey! The B&M ALCo family has grown again Big Smile

I previously owned two sets of 217s. The new acquisition is a 226 A and B, with a spare chassis. The shells are pretty badly wrecked, you could make an easy argument they're beyond saving. The chassis aren't much better.

I do like a challenge, but this one's going to test me.

I had an idea that I could take a donor (not special) shell, and 'cut and paste' pieces from the donor onto places that are missing on the 226P shell.

The B-Unit shell is more or less complete, but has several cracks that need repair.

-Ellie
PS: I did a bunch of careful typesetting work to make the pictures smaller so they don't take up a zillion miles of post- it displays fine in the post editor but when I view the posted post, they're all huge! Dunno why, and don't think there's anything I can do to fix it.

Wow.  Ellie you've got your work cut out for you with that shell!

I guess if all else fails you can use it to model a scrapyard but if anyone can bring it back to like you're the one!

Currently having one hot week out here in Western MA. It could be a lot worse, but the hot/humid combo has been enough to keep me planted inside. And what is there to do indoors, besides working on trains?

Over the past couple days I've fixed a couple of the new buys from last weekend- a Triang loco from the late '60s, and a Hornby Dublo steamer. Both models run very nicely. The 1062 from my uncataloged 11580 Lionel O27 outfit got a nice bath and some fresh lubricant. I have unfortunately discovered the reverse unit now manicly changes the loco's direction when it is engaged, making it impossible to run the locomotive. My two guesses are somehow the transformer I tested it with (MTH Z-750/Z-controller) and the loco don't play nice for whatever reason, or perhaps the replacement traction tire I put on it changed the balance of the loco a little and it isn't grounding as well. If I can find the correct tender to go with it, with extra grounding strip, that should resolve any grounding issues (currently missing).

Today's big challenge is to finally repair the ZW I've had for a few years. I've been holding off due to it needing a full teardown, but today I bit the bullet and started in on the project. I should have taken more pictures as it was coming apart!

I have most of the replacement parts I thought I'd need, but it looks like somehow one of the ZW-55 contact tabs got broken. I'm going to see if I can repair the original for now, but even if that works out I would eventually like to replace it with a new one. All the large plastic pieces of the transformer have been washed and are now drying off, ideally I'd love to have the whole thing done by dinner but we'll see how that pipe dream goes...

Wanted to provide an update... my first ever ZW repair was a success! I gave the case a good cleaning, replaced all 4 carbon rollers, and wired in a new power cord. I had a nice, heavy duty one left over from a broken vaccum cleaner I took apart, which should last for many years. It was also nice to pick an arbitrary cord length of my choosing, since the cord was a good 10-15 feet at least to start with!

The whistle rectifier for the D throttle is toast, but the one on the A throttle still works. At some point I'll replace the defective one, and I might as well do them both when that time comes...
In the meantime, I'm really enjoying running trains with my 'new' toy Laugh

Great job on the ZW Ellie!  You've got more guts than I do, the inside of that thing looks scary!  Makes me wonder if that's what the insides of "Little Boy" or "Fat Man" looked like!  Surprise

Like the run-by too!  A fine demonstration of a job well done!  Bow

Wayne, I took the cover off not long after I got it 2-3 years ago, took one look, and said "okay... maybe not today". Then it sat on a shelf. I'd keep seeing it, and thinking "man I'd love to have that transformer working..." but all the wires made me nervous. But in the intervening years, I've tackled several other projects, including two KWs, one of which I'd attempted to work on before and given up on! So earlier this week I was thinking about the ZW and thought... maybe it was time.

The secret to my success was to take pictures from a few angles of all the wiring, and try to avoid repositioning the wires too much as I took things out. When it came time to put everything back, it was a little hard to read because the transformer itself is shown on the diagram at a different orientation to how it sits in the case. In the end, it was my pictures that ensured I got all the wires reconnected to the correct terminals.

I think this transformer experienced some sort of catastrophic short at some point, and I think this might have been what killed the diode- there were signs of it with one of the rollers looking pretty fried, and some burn(?) marks on the secondary winding and the wipers. I was worried I had bought a "dud" but it looks like whatever damage it may have sustained didn't wreck the transformer. When I first plugged it in I was ready to yank the cord at the first sign of trouble.

One thing I noticed when I was wrapping up work, is one of the wiper arms comes very close to one of the terminals on the primary winding for the cord coming in. I put some electrical tape over it to ensure the wiper can't come into contact with it. I've never seen this mentioned anywhere, but I didn't want to risk any chance of mains voltage going through my trains.

I concur, sometimes working up the nerve to tackle a complicated project is half the battle.  Every time I pull the shell off a contemporary engine and see the rat's nest of wiring I have to take a DEEP breath before I continue!

It makes me appreciate the rugged simplicity of Post-Wars all the more!
