Mornin' boys. Flurries and 32 along the Potomac highlands. Our brakeman and I will be at yard this morning pulling Christmas displays off car sides, and start prepping them for upcoming events. Big Boss is "all in" with the light displays, and wants to build on what I started this year.
C&O 1309 is still coming along. The driving wheels have been returned to the main shop, the lagging is on and the engine sheet metal shroud is almost done.
Wifey and I are "almost" crud-free... I, however, apparently developed a severe left shoulder strain, and have been wearing IcyHot pads. I smell like Walter...
88 - Wish I was nearby to gather all that unused mud to slap on my layout's bare spots. That's what I did a year ago, after the great "flood of 2018". When the drywall guys were here, I was constantly using the leftovers to scenic the new pike. BTW- saw where VPQ's "kneelers" lost to LA...That's a shame...
Banks - Waiting for the Blair Co show...
Mornin' FellasFife - the 'leftovers' weren't really fit for anything. This stuff is quite heavy and got mixed up with the dust and scrapings from the old wall covering. I'll be blowing crud out of my nose for a couple weeks. Nice news on 1309!Gotta makes some calls to get the listing updated...

The streets appear safe this morning but at 32 degrees the sidewalk and driveways have a thin sheet of ice on them. So far this year I have not done any model train work. The modular layout was at Greenfield Village for the Christmas season but I didn't put in anytime there this season. We do have a big train show coming up on the 20th. We will be running a layout at the show while the other Detroit Historical Society layout will be at the historic Detroit Union Station for a large Ford Motor Co.doings.

Aloha. Grey and rainy but warm today - might hit 50 . I am glad to be back in the office after being in and out of ERs and hospitals last week as a result of a flare up of an old urological issue that came out of one of my cancer treatments. I sure appreciate being healthy or close to it. I'll be catching up on everything I had to postpone or put off this wek. Not looking forward to the eventual bills. Ah well. Glad to be able to deal with them though. Read a few fun train mags during all my lying in time.

Good Afternoon from overcast 54°F Southern Ohio,
I was able to sign in without an issue from work. I’m back on dayshift for a month assigned as relief supervisor. Not quite as hectic so I have some time to check in.
I shot a nice big doe Saturday morning and got it to the processor in less than 3 hours from the shot. Quick kill, easy drag and with the rising temps predicted I wanted to get it into a cooler. While at the processor we picked up the meat from the big buck we dropped off last Saturday. I have one more doe tag so we’ll see if I’ll go out again. The freezer has the meat of three deer in it now from this year so we will not need to get a whole beef this year. Mary made some great soup last night from the venison, and the kids have been eating the summer sausage like crazy.
Over the weekend we took advantage of the 50+ temps and got all the outside decorations down and they’re in the garage awaiting to go to the loft. All that’s left inside is the Christmas tree in the living room and the family room.
Fife & Doug - Glad you’re feeling better
RT - I know what you mean about the going through boxes, seems to take forever
Mike C - Special prayers for Lucas
Got to go, may God bless
Jim
Buenos tardes modelo de tren de nueces!
Nice and toasty here today - party sunny - 70! Temps to drop later this week - but we will enjoy it while it lasts!
Got stalled at the shop due to some missing stuff that will show up tomorrow, so son and I headed home early.
DougM - glad you are OK!
Fife - glad the lighting project was deemed a success by da boss!
88- happy you got that basement project out of the way - here's to success in selling the house (finally!).
SJ - glad you are watching the ice carefully - so glad we do not have to deal with it here very often.
Regards, Roy
Phish, did not know you were an avid hunter. Sounds like you are doing well with three deer in the freezer. I only ate venison once a long time ago and can't remember what it tasted like but you have enough to put a big dent in the butcher bill. Sounds like your family likes it.
Went to TTOS meet yesterday and had a long gab session with Don Baker and Larry Kostka. There was a lot of stuff in the auction but nothing tempted me.
Went to lunch with my son today which was nice.
I just paid a late car registration last week on my old Buick through the auto club but got another notice from the DMV today in the mail. They probably didn't get my payment yet. I just put it on a non operating status which is cheaper.

Good evening all,
Work seemed to drag today for some reason. Weather was tolerable for walk. Saw three of my "regulars" on the walk which was a pleasant surprise. Finished an old American Heritage on the West that I have been trying to get done. Those were good books. I hope everyone has a good day.
Keep on training,

robmcc Kev - I have my eye on that BNSF hopper as well. I wish the 1:1 version looked that sharp! Are you still passing on the Lionel BNSF Tier 4? That hopper would look sharp with that set.

Rob,I called CharlsRo and reinstated the order on the Lionel BNSF Tier 4. I think I will loose the pre-order discount but should still get the set. I will let you know what I think when,,,& if ever it gets here.

Jim we're trying to figure where all this stuff came from as we have all the hutches/cabinets full and we only deleted one ( because of room ) and we have like 35 more boxes to go thru. We have come up with about 15+ boxes already for yard sale items lol. I keep telling her we may not get this yard sale done in one week-end lol. Maybe one in March and another in April. LOL. I still need to pull stuff down from the attic the last owners left. Not a lot but a few items.
Wife knows trains are not included in yard sale items. :)
I'am including some small wooden trains thou and may include some wooden ones about the size of G or maybe a little bigger, once I find them all.
Hope all had a good day, I had a busy one. Went to cardioligy PT and then went to other place and crammed my truck full with stuff to bring here. as soon as I can get that place empty and cleaned, then I can do some spruceing up of it and put it on the market. :)
Want to get rid of that place. The sooner the better.

Good morning all
Early morning as IT needed in the building. Since I am here at 5:30 normally, came in an extra 1/2 earlier.
Stuff multiplies. I came into this house with so little but I see a large accumulation of stuff that I have no idea where it came from!
Warm and wet is in store for Western PA. Have a good one folks!

Good Morning from overcast 59°F Southern Ohio,
Started moving decorations up to loft last night but did not get to the Christmas trees, maybe tonight. I had to pick up some extra duties for the kids as my bride was with her mom all day after her mom had some health complications.
I drove the truck to work and I plan on stopping by Lowes to get the foam for the layout and have the materials to get started when (and if) time opens up.
RT - I agree with Marty, it seems like our “stuff” multiplies and accumulates. I still have 61 years of “stuff” in the house we rent to our daughter that we moved from 18 months ago. I’m now at the point where if I need it I’ll go and get it, otherwise it is going to stay where it is at. She is getting a real discount on rent so it is a small sacrifice on her part to provide “storage”.
Ray - I got back into hunting this season after not hunting for years. The biggest advantage is now having enough land with a decent deer population to hunt on my own land. This greatly reduces the time spent away from home scouting and hunting. I also broke down and made the transition from a compound bow to a crossbow after years of abuse to my shoulders and pain trying to draw and hold the compound.
Lunch break almost over
May God bless,

Phish, bow hunting! Wow, that seems like true sport. What kind of range is there on a crossbow for an arrow to have enough power to bring down a deer?
Got an invite to go to a Senior Center dinner for volunteers today. A friend of mine is taking me as his guest.
Ray - The crossbow I use is a Barnett Whitetail Pro. It has a draw weight of 150 pounds and 103 pounds of kinetic energy, shooting a 375 grain broadhead and arrow (bolt) at 350 feet per second. Distance out to 70 yards is not out of the question but accuracy is shooter dependent. Drop is about 3 inches per 10 yards.
The shots I’ve taken were broadside at 20-25 yards, after impact each deer traveled less than 10 yards and dropped within 60 seconds. All shots have taken out both lungs and heart. Quick and humane kills.

WOW The temps have dropped 10 degrees in the last hour and will drop 20 more tonight. Wind is whipping and winter is taking hold. Was 47 now 37.
Buenos noches amigos!
60's and partly cloudy today. Front rolls through tonight and back to normal 50's tomorrow. Possible rain later this week.
Frustrating day today, almost completed the control panel/cart build but some indecision today re some of the parts to be mounted on it. Should be resolved tomorrow.
Phish - crossbow - impressive!
Kev - that bike looks nice!
I am trying hard to get rid of stuff. If something were to happen to me I do not want the family to have to deal with all my 'stuff'. I recently have sorted stuff such that everything in the 9x10 garden shed (save the lawnmower, weed eater) goes into the trash. The garden shed has all the accumulated home repair crap in boxes on shelves - electrical, plumbing, lawn sprinkler parts, painting, camping, wood (trim, etc.), home mechanical (hinges, latches, locks, window parts, cabinet h/w), drywall repair), pool parts, etc. No one here but me knows what this stuff goes to. I plan to get to the train stuff this year - sort the stuff I want and dispose of the rest.
Hello there,
Christmas is winding down here. Yesterday I got most of the outside stuff down. Need help wth the ladder to get lights off the gutters. Putting everything away will wait till I can lift a little more. The tree and inside stuff will stay a few weeks or until it starts to drop too many needles.
Spent some time today dealing with some Mom issues. Watching a lot of the PA Farm Show.
Managed to break a tooth last evening. Got an appointment to deal with it on Thursday, thankfully it's not painful.
Roy......downsizing is part of cleanout and renovate before we move to the townhouse.
Kev....still have my '70 ElCamino and a several dirt bikes I've had since the mid 70's. Plus a bunch of trains.........
Phish.........congas on the deer. How much ground do you have.
Fife.......spent 20 minutes online trying to find the date of the Show. I'll let you know when I find it. Usually the 1st Sunday in March but the convention center website dosen't show it at all.
Best move on.
Prayers for those in need,
Busy day at work until around 2 then all quiet. Wife and I looked at possible trips at TCA convention this summer. We may do that. Have friends there so do a double. Weather turning colder. Stur-fish, that is some shooting. Got a quote on doing the garage doors. Have to cogitate on that as well. I hope everyone has a good day.
Morning all...
Winter blew into Western PA last night. Trying to take down flags last night in 50 MPH winds was fun. Normally I'd let them ride it out but the pole was really flexing and bouncing.
Plan on starting to re-inventoring all my "stuff" this weekend. It's been a while and I want to get an accurate list for both buying and just knowing what I have. I guess the talk of all the stuff we gather was sort of a kick in the pants. Like to get some nice photos for inventory as well.
Stay safe everyone.
Mornin' boys. Temps dropping and flurries along the front range of the Alleghanies. A stay inside kinda day. Perhaps train room time.
Big Boss has tapped me to attend MD state house with him at the end of the month. Attended my first Canal Place meeting yesterday, for upcoming "River & Rails" fest, scheduled for the end of August. I'm pretty sure I came across like a bull in a china shop... We'll see....
Banks - Yes, let me know please.
fife...Most organizations need a good shaking up once in a while and your knowledge and viewpoint will be refreshing for the Cumberland crowd to hear. BTW, I worked on the historic Muskingum River Locks and Dams, a slack water canal system with hand operated locks.
Just checking in.
Cloudy and 28 degrees. Some flurries floating around but no real snow expected. No train news, club meet coming up this Saturday.
Good Morning from windy 29°F Southern Ohio,
From 60° to snow in less than a week. Crazy.
Banks - we have about 6.5 acres on one side of a 20 acre woodland in the middle of the city. There is a lot of deer and the deer herd is in need of thinning out and bow and crossbow are the only legal methods of hunting because discharging a firearm is illegal in the city limits. I had read about big city bucks and it is true. One of the bucks we got green scored 128 pts.
Dennis,
Not sure because it is on it's second spedo. First one broke years ago. This one shows 21K. There was about 13 years I did not ride because of two friends of mine that got killed on their bikes and I just did not have the taste for it. I just can't bring myself to sell her after all this time.
So, my best guess on mine is somewhere around 50k. I did blow it up in like 78 or 79. I put the first 867cc big bore kit in it in winter of 1976.
It was built to race and has never been an easy ride. The trip I took to Yellowstone on it in the early 80s my rearend was leather by the time I got home.
Quick pass through. Sunny and 59. Strong north breeze makes it feel cooler. Had busy morning until now. Errands this afternoon.
Afternoon all! (Buenas Tardes Roy!)
Ugh... I guess it was my turn to be locked out for a few days. I know we've all grumbled about this at one time or another.
A few flurries today hovering around 28.
Nothing too exciting over the last 4-5 days. I watched some football and took down the Christmas decorations over the weekend. Went to my wife's neice's "Gender Reveal" party on Saturday. Sign of the times, I guess. Remember when the Dr. said "It's a boy or girl"?
I did find out when I was taking down the Christmas lights that my corrugated drain pipe had fallen off of the downspout at the side of the house. I'm hoping that was my damp basement problem. Brent, I'll still take your advice if I do have to go to Plan B.
DougM - Glad you're feeling better.
MikeC - It does suck for your son. Been there, done that. Like others have said, it will get better. Just be there for him. I'm forever indebted to my folks when it hit the fan for me.
Kev- Glad you're re-ordering the set. I think it's still a good value. I'll be looking forward to a "Kev's Train Box" review! I might spring for one for my dad. He's been eyeing up a BNSF diesel for a while, but since he's conventional, he doesn't want to spend the $$$ on a command one. Nice bike too!
Spank - Yeah that seemed a little much from Corey's teacher. I know hearing the other side from my wife (a teacher) about the lack of respect, mouthing off/swearing and making threats, it's a tough gig. By the sounds of it, his teacher could have dealt with that a little better though.
Marty - I've been starting to inventory mine as well, especially when you almost buy the same thing twice! It's a little embarassing when you go through a box and say to yourself you forgot you owned that!! It is good to have though for insurance and for estate planning.
I think that's got me caught up. If I missed anything/anyone, than my thoughts and prayers to you, of course.
Have a good one,
Rob
Today was play with trains day!!!
Well I pulled out all of those 9 RTR train sets today from my uncle and ran all of the engines. They all worked, some better than others. The Hogwarts engine kept derailing and I could not see why? The two rear wheels on the engine come off the tracks, maybe the pick up springs are to tight??? Most all are starter sets but some are nicer than others. The Santa Fe Flyer Freight Set is real nice and has a nice USRA 0-8-0.
The set I thought would be a POS was one of the nicest. The QVC Lionel Mines Gold set from 1999 is a great set with special made gold bank car, a gondola with the two guys running around chasing each other and a gold filled hopper car. Also a nice 2-6-4 engine with smoke and a very good whistle in the tender. I don't think he ever ran it. So I put that on the layout and boxed the Copper Range Mine Set back up.
On the dark side I put the new Menards Hopper car on with one of my sets and it has issues with the trucks hitting the side ladders and derailing, also the auto coupler part that would be pulled down by an activation track section drags on the switches but just sparks and does not cause any derailing??? Not sure what to do about that. Everything is mounted to plastic?
To cold to do much else.
