Good Evening,

Well here we are in American Canyon, (I didn't know this place exsisted). We wanted a place close so we could spend more time in Napa and the area after riding the Wine Train.  So today we traced our tracks and drove north to Saint Helene. The local towns are really beautiful, lot of the buildings go back to the 1880s.  So visited a few wineries on our way back south.  and that was real cool.  (When we got married 37 years ago we were going to spend honeymoon in this area, I had a broken leg at the time, and didn't get into the wineries much.  So 37 years later we DID IT !  (Was a totally diferent leg break, that one only ended up with 3 surgeries, even though it was the same leg as the recent incident.)

G BEAR, WELCOME TO THE FORUM!  On our way back we drove through the Veterans home in Yountville a little bit, really nice looking grounds, and a pretty big place.

Mostly did curio shopping no train stuff.  Tomorrow going to start heading home.

Ray, I think your right about the engines being F A units.  Today they had totally different engines.

Well need to go and check out the maps and see which way we want to go and avoid the fires.

Take care and be safe!

Hello Don,

I'd like to apologize to you and your wife Katy.  If I had my thinking cap on I would have invited the two of you to be my guest while you were up here in the valley. Embarrassed  I'm glad that you had the time to visit the Veterans Home. Slightly off topic, the home is open to any veteran aged (62 years) or disabled, single or married who has lived in California for at least one year.  I hope that you had a great time while you were here.

Banks

Hello there,
Still on the right side of of the grass. Just not a lot of time. Read daily but post not so much. Life has been...interesting. Spending to much time in Moon Township and Mom's TIA'S are becoming more frequent and severe.

Got my York badges the other day. Now if life just permits me to go

Prayers for those in need

Banks, I hope you can make it this time around.  Sounds like you need a break.

Looks like Don B. is having a great time on his belated vacation.  All that wine tasting seems to have him in a jolly mood.

This is the week of the Elizabethtown Fair, It's just up the road from our house, we are planning on a visit tomorrow for lunch and a look around.

BTW, the cooler weather has been with us for two days and it is great, but the heat is going to start gradually building tomorrow.

All take care.

Evenin' boys.  Pleasant weather in the "land of pleasant living on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay." (beer jingle)  Spent afternoon scraping loose paint off the garage for repainting.  Let grandson have at my tool chest, and then he refused to put things away.  Pool table has part of my train collection scattered all over it, as my sister came over yesterday to video the train layout before it comes down.  When she edits it up with music, I'll be sure to share it with y'all.

Good evening all,

Good day at work.  Good weather for walk.  Good evening to watch junior high bounce back from a 7-1 loss on Monday with a boomerang score tonight.  As AJ would say, "All in all, it was a good day."  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Hi Doug, I feel your pain with that train repair time.  I was going to mention the one Don used but I see he has already responded to your post.  I waited about a year for various people to fool around with a MTH  4-8-4 Santa Fe engine that I finally sent back to MTH and waited some more.  It is finally running but they put the drawbar on upside down.  No big thing but I won't complain.  If it breaks down again it will stay down. Now I have an engine that I have twice the money in that a new one would cost if it were available.  I quit on this one.

Don, hope you have a wonderful trip on the time remaining.  Sounds like a romantic time for you and Kay.  Very nice.

Evening all!

Checking in. Been enjoying the cooler weather, particularly the mornings. Looks like temps climb up tomorrow. Been working on trim and details on the porch.

Don - sounds like a fun trip. We did the wine train around 25 years ago.

I very rarely have issues with this forum, but for the last two posts, it is requiring me to log in each time even though the 'keep me logged in' box is checked.

Take care all!

Good morning from Roger's Corners, Ohio!

It has been a very busy summer and we still have one wedding to go.

I'm seeing YORK in my future this fall.  If you remember last year I was ready to go and then the kidney stones put me out of commission for 7 weeks.

You got that right Fife!!! Stick out tongue So they don't want the train layout. Bet that will be bittersweet to take down.

The kids have a closing today at 2:30PM if nothing else gets in the way. Yes

Rain will be the word today,

I had a real bad night. Almost no sleep. My arms are killing me from the fall down the stairs. Mostly off the meds now and I know what is messed up and why I can't sleep. Had to go to the spare room to sleep so I would not wake up Sandra from flopping around like a fish out of water in bed.

Later going to pick up the kids from school then meet up with Katie & Dan after they close. In the mean time it is raining so I will try to rest up in the recliner.

Buckeye it sure takes longer to mend up these days.

Mornin' Fellas

Got Christina on the bus this morning for her first day of Kindergarten. The bus driver wasn't expecting a newbie today and closed the door on Christina as she was stepping in. All is good. We all laughed about it.

Banks - what are you doing in Moon? That is about 1/2 between my parent's home and my place in Aliquippa.

Fife - good luck! keeping the finger crossed!

Buckeye - If you make it to York I may have to come up for dinner on Thursday?

Probe - above should give you another chuckle. Wink

Well not much else going on today other than meetings... fun!

Did not get as hot today. Nice breeze.

Fife- no outhouse means no visits from the Chief. He does not comprehend indoor plumbing....Laugh

Have a great evening all!

Good evening all,

Well it is a done deal. Daughter and Some-day-Maybe got their house. Lots of cleaning to do before moving in can start. Guess it would be like that on any 24 year old place. Not a bad place all in all. Dan can work along at the projects there and I will give him tips and nints.. Wink

I loaded up my spare walk behind lawn mower I had from Plainfield. It will be perfect for their place. Will take it there tomorrow. Still at war with myself. Feel like I have aged 10 years since I went down the stairs. Just hurt everyplace but don't want to be on those drugs.  Crying Catch 22. I am hateing it all. Angry

Wiring a new Wally World. My foreman there has never done a new store so I've been spending as much time as I can there for moral support.

Never heard of the place. Checked it out online and decided to try. Not only food was so so staff and decor just didn't seem welcoming.

About 90 and humid here tonight.  There is a line of storms producing tornado watch/warning to the north of us.  My wife and I were sitting on the front porch watching an impressive lightning show - no thunder though.  Wsh I had the time exposer feature figured out on my digital SLR camera.  Would have gotten some good lightning shots.

Been doing maintenance on me the last few days - a physical last Friday, dentist on Monday and ankle & hip x-rays today.

All for now.

Mornin' boys.  Sunny & 71 in the Mid-Atlantic region.  More packing up today.  Speaking of, the ladies were cleaning out the girls' closet, and started through their collection of prom/homecoming gowns.  Just for giggles, the youngest princess (remember she's turning 16 soon) started trying on her older sisters' one-night-wunders...  Fifey is in trouble.

I hope everyone made it through the storms. Local news showed a tornado forming on the Detroit river and then moved east into Canada. it touched down in 2 places. We just got downpours of rain but I did worry about our fourm friends in Indiana.

You've been in trouble for a long while! You and Wifey have raised some good looking kids! Can't believe the youngest princess is almost ready to drive! Guess she was @ 6 when I first met her.

Would love to get together before the dismanteling commenses?

Good Morning,

We made it home fine, actually kinda a quiet entry.  Good to be home.  Fortunately everything seems to be in order.  Got a busy few days though.  Chris gave me a pleasant surprise.  He had a picture made for me.  It is 8x10, canvas image of me in the cab  of engine 41 at Knott's.  What makes it uniques is that it has a bluetooth speaker in it.  It comes with a "kickstand" or can be mounted on the wall.  This version also has a microphone in the image, the sound is pretty good.  I connected it my phone and played music through it.  You can also carry a conversation on between the picture and incoming calls.  (I couldn't resist sat the picture in the bathroom, then called my cell.  The unsuspecting would be in shock when this ringing then voice comes through, it was quite comical!  Of course all the sounds come back to the phone.)

Got to get caught up with the company stuff, but that wont be hard, then need to get some prep work done in the train room, have a Lionel Heisler suppose to arrive on Friday.

Then Friday, Chris made arrangements for his Geological society have a tour of THUMS oil islands. (Texaco, Humble (now Exxon), Union Oil, Mobil, and Shell.)   These are four off shore oil islands just in the Long Beach harbor.  They have all been designed so as not to be an eyesore.  They were built in the mid 60's and named after the Apollo 1 astronaughts.  It is unusual to get a tour, so I am quite lucky.  (The gray structure in the picture is a drilling rig on a track that moves around the island servicing the wells.)

Then Friday night some kind of special excursion to the Aquarium of the Pacific.  So lots going on.

Roy, is the Patio being preparred for a layout extension?

Kev,  Try to give your self time to heal, don't over do it with the house?

Fife, Packing in preparation?  Or is the big move underway?

Doug, Hope you see your engine soon, I haven't had much luck with that shop either, the owner and I had a few words years back.  They cater to the entertainment industry setting stuff up and renting to them.

Take care all and stay Healthy!

Don

Hello all

Back for a few more days on the mountain. Weather is nice this morning. Still in summer maintenance mode for a few more weeks. Working on various projects and helping coordinate others.

Move is going slower than I would like, but things are happening. Will prob extend the rent at the park for a couple weeks into Sept. Will be nice when this is done.

Datsun has been sitting down at the barn for a couple weeks. Last time I drove it I realized the carb adapter bolts had loosened up. In the meantime the mechanical fuel pump came in, so I will do both together this Sat I hope.

In the process of converting the Corvan to 2-spd wipers. I pulled a 2-spd motor off a parts cars a while back and just recently the single speed switch went out on the van so I figured this was the time. Got a new 2-spd switch from Clarks and a very nicely made harness for the wiper motor. I will not use the stock washer pump and will eventually just add a reservoir w/ a small electric pump.

Kev - hope you are feeling better soon

Fife - congrats on selling the house. You going to save anything from the layout to use at the new place?

Don - I remember seeing those islands when I was staying on the Queen Mary a few years back. Have you been down to see the USS Iowa since they moved her to San Pedro?

Welcome home Don, glad your place was in order.  The picture Chris gave you sounds like a gas.  I am taking the day off from everything.  No appointments but just lay around.  Slept until 9:00AM.  I needed it.  Went out to dinner with Friend Larry and a group of people from his senior center last night.  Stayed up late watching TV.  Some of our old neighbors are visiting Helen today so I'm taking the day off.  Might even run trains if it isn't too hot in there.  My brother in Virginia caught a Tarpon weighing over 100 lbs at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay at Eastern Shore.  His son put a video on facebook.  He has caught them before but it's unusual to see them that far North.  they're mostly in Florida.  He is 75 now and not used to handling big fish anymore but he got it in.  They also caught 50 croakers and some speckled trout, stingray and shark.  All were released except the limit on the trout and croakers which I don't think have a limit.  I went Tarpon fishing with him once but we did not catch any.  Did see another angler with one on.  They jump and really put on a show.

Don, I saw a video and photos on "Trainorders.com" today of Knott's #340 being put back in service after being overhauled.  Now they are going to overhaul the one you worked on.

Ray

PS, Don, if you like Dixieland Jazz there is some kind of family cafe called Curleys in Signal Hill at the corner of Cherry and Willow.  They have a 6 piece live jazz band there every Friday Night.  Wish I could get down there sometime.  They also have just a tuba and banjo sing along on Wednesday.  They say Curleys has been there since the oil pumping days.  They still have one of those horsehead pumps in front of the place I think.  I figured you live closer than me if you want to check it out sometime.  I heard the band play at a jazz club I joined in Covina.
