Lionel Standard Gauge 381E!!!
Posted by lionel2 on Thursday, January 9, 2014 8:12 AM

Hello all,  I have a new Lionel standard gauge 381E in state green colors.  It has a BAL motor and is weighted for extra traction. I was looking to buy some state more state cars to have my 381E pull them.  Right now I only have one state car, the Illinois car in state green.  The car is brand new from MTH.  I have the Maryland state green car on the way.  Looking to get the 3 car set, the california, colorado and New York cars next.  But, my concern is, can the 381E with a single BAL motor pull 5 state cars?  I know I heard that it can pull 4 cars easily.  But, can it pull 5 cars??  I am using brand new MTH 42 inch radius track.  I have a 20x8 layout just for standard gauge.  I seen a video on you tube of a 381E pulling 6 state cars, but I have no idea what radius track was being used.  I know if I pull 6 or more big 400 series passenger cars with my 408E, the passenger cars tip over and derail.  I know my 408E can pull like 9 of those 400 series passenger cars on a straight away track, but the curves, no way.  But, my 408E does have dual motors and is really heavy.  I do not think I have room for wide radius track.  Maybe I could use 72 inch radius track, my layout is 8 feet wide, which is 96 inches wide. Any help will do.  Thanks, Jeff
