Mornin' Fellas

Not much going on... just some project planning and vacation planning. Speaking of vacations... no York this year for me. We are planning two family vacations so I'll need to bank my time. Sad

As for OSes. Windows7 Home Premium at home and Windows7 Ultimate at work. Windows8 is designed for touchscreen devices (phones, tablets, Surface, etc) if you don't have a touchscreen monitor it is a bit cumbersome. 8 is built off the 7 platform with a different interface. I have not messed with it enough to know if you can which it to run like 7. I have heard a bunch of rumors that Microsoft is no longer updating drivers for 7 and also hardware manufacturers are starting to drop 7 from their supported OS list. If this is the case it will be the fastest OS in History to lose legacy support.

Brent......thank you for your expert advice.  I don't have a touchscreen monitor and guess I will be forced to learn something new and go with 8.0 or 8.1.  My daughter is tech savvy and will get us through this conversion.  I have until the beginning of April to make the change.

There must be a boatload of others here on the Forum that have Windows XP and are in the same boat as I am.

My daughter has already observed that the wife and I should also be in the market for a new desktop while we are at it, or just move to laptops permanently.  Wifey has one for her own use.  Daughter's observation:  the glitches on my old iron will just keep on coming.

Mornin' All.

Jon, I see Mother Nature is giving you a nice "Welcome Home". Are the Brass Monkeys  starting to sing soprano this time round. Prayers for your and Don's surgery this week.

Anybody have one of the animated mail cars from Lionel or K-Line ? If so could you post a picture of the "mail bags" that are kicked out by the figure ? I'm trying to give some additional detail to the RPO that came with the L&N RK passenger set. I thought that they may be what I need to give the car the look of some mailbags waiting to be sorted by some on board clerks.

Gotta get in gear and get some stuff done.

Later all.

Holy Cow it's cold!!!!  This would not be a good day to put your tongue on the flag pole.  The wind chills are well below zero and it's simply dangerous outside, in north east IA they pulled the state plows off the road last night as it was impossible.  A 12 car/semi accident closed the interstate because of visibility in that area.  Hopefully the winds will subside tonight as we go south of zero again.  We have no snow on the ground so that's a real plus.

I did make two appointments this morning and that felt good, hair cut tomorrow and pick up an absentee ballot for Feb. 4 vote.  Both cars are serviced and clean, sadly I won't be able to drive for six weeks so I need to buy a blindfold as my wife will be driving ......... full time.  Neither one of us are looking forward to that.  Our  four year old grandson is coming to be with us this weekend, REALLY looking forward to his being here, he's my Train Buddy Thumbs Up

We sure enjoyed LaJolla last week and the big waves, the locals were really talking about the waves -- simply gorgeous.  I was also impressed with all of the hard corps adult swimmers in wet suits swimming through that surf, especially impressed when the water temp was 59!  Doug, you live in beautiful state and we sure enjoy visiting, especially in the winter.  I hope maybe next year or the year after to rent an apartment or extended stay place in San Diego for January.  Of all of the warm weather places we've visited SD is our #1 choice.

Good evening all,

Skin checkup was ok.  There is a spot he wants to check on in 3 months.  Could have done a biopsy today, but did not feel like a slice and dice in this weather.  Cold here but no snow last night so roads are clear.  Went thru more stuff today.  A lot of it is genealogy work my mom did and my daughter wants to work on later on when the kids are gone.  We box up and store upstairs.  Not much else going on.  Back to work tomorrow.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Good Evening All !

Well everything seems to be a go for the surgery tomorrow.  Trains are all secure, power shut off, and every thing taken care of.  All Pre-Op tests completed and ready.  There is only one thing I am confused about, got a call today that a "Bone Stimulator" has been prescribed by the Dr. Blindfold.  So this guy (sales person type), came out to the house delivered the unit, and provided instructions on usage.  I know I am getting older but when did they start prescribing these types of devices for a hospital visit.  Hmmmmm

Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers, I am certain everything will be fine.

So you all take care and talk with you later.  AND Stay WARM and HEALTHY !

Weather was in the mid-50's yesterday. My dashboard thermometer read 8 degrees this morning! What a change! Sumbob - You probably know this, but the 1st generation Covair Spyder option was turbo charged from the factory. Can't help but wonder if one of those setups would bolt into a Corvan? If I remember correctly, these turbo set ups were not intercooled. Makes one wonder what could be done with today's fuel injection systems, intercoolers, and turbo technology. I've been running 'Covair turbo' mufflers on my small block Chevys for years. They sound good and flow well. Prayers for those undergoing surgery this week. All for now.

A newbie.  Welcome to the Pot.

Was 65 degrees in Pinetops NC this afternoon.  At dark 62.  By tomorrow night, forecasted inches of snow.  Walked my legs off this day.  Sometimes in dry soil, some in mud and some braking ice on top of big mud holes.  Schools are already closed in Edgecombe Co. [where farms are]  Strange.

Windy and temps dropping.  Now they are saying we have have inches by night fall tomorrow night.  Meetings are being postponed.  We'll see.

Tired.  Sleep tight.

Hello all

Like the new rear shocks. After 49 years the originals were just trim.

8N - the turbo would bolt on, just not fit under the engine lid of a Corvan. They sit up kind of tall compared to the dual Model H's, even with the sidedraft Carter (which is problematic anyway, I had one on a motorhome w/ a 225 /6).

Jack - Clawde's 'roomates' were missing when I got homeSurprise

So an un-named major model train vendor managed to charge me to ship an item from a town in their home state....to their locationTongue Tied When the order status clearly shows it to be shipped to another state. What is up w/ that? Won't be using them againGrumpy

Time to find a pillow.

Good Mornin' Y'all From Sunny But Cold Taxachusetts,

The weather from points West are upon us as the overnight temperatures are reaching single digits, will be for the next three days.  Snow on Saturday, but just a dusting.

Jon and Don (sounds like a duet), I will be thinking healing thoughts today for your imminent surgeries.

Chuck.......you've got the coordinates perfect on the snow cannon.  The Chief should get hit pretty good tonight.  The Southerners are not very resilient.......Chief says schools are closing due to one inch of snow.

Bob......check Clawde's weight.  You don't want him to get fat. Glad to hear that the Corvan progress continues......don't think I have seen one in decades.

HudsonJohn.......a 65 year old friend of ours had both knees replaced, one last August and one in October.  He is making wonderful progress.  We saw him Christmas and I was astounded at how well he was getting around.  He was using a cane most of the time but I saw him walking without it and no limp......he was practicing.  He said flexibility has been a challenge, and he says the second procedure seems to be coming around more slowly.  I hope your wife's progress is as good as his.  Where is AF Ray hiding out?

MikeC......is it Indy car that has the series in 2014 that is running all electric cars?  I suppose it won't be long before we all will be in a hybrid and then pure electric after that.  Rich and Banks will be in a state of total depression when that happens.

LAZ...........no mention of Ole Mils.  Did you run out?  More important than bread and milk with this weather!  We went to a freind's house in Maine Sunday afternoon for pizza and beer, and I brought some beer for everyone.  I went to put it outside, right by the kitchen door, when I saw there was no room in the fridge.  The wife asks me :  "Why are you putting it out there?"Whistling

SJ......get out there and feed the sled dogs.

RT........please read Chuck's posts.  Loafing is an art form.  Learn from the experts.

I can't wait until we get the weather forecast from the California boys.  It is is the highlight of my day, weather porn so to speak.

Where is Roy?

JoeyD.....rumor has it that the Yankees are getting new, looser fitting uniforms this season.  That is so the Depends fit under there.

Mitch......when I saw that photo of you with the nail gun all I could think of was Danny Glover in one of the Lethal Weapon movies doing in a bad guy with one.

JimmyT........I read on the net that Windows 7 support from Microsoft is the next to go, after XP support goes away in April..

Later, gang.

Morning all.  Chilly 32 degrees and dropping.  Air feels icy.  Snohio due by middle of the afternoon.

Jack, schools closed and no snow yet.  Actually, the school system is so large they do a 3 tier bus system.  Elementary lets out first, then middle and then high school.  All use the same buses.  If they had gone to school, by the time it started snowing, would be hours before the last bus delivered the last kid.

Highways were covered with brine solution by yesterday.  Even secondary roads.  Nice thing about being retired, don't have to do anything but look out the window and smile.

LAZ, actually the guy forgot eggs.  Its bread, milk and eggs.  WHY???

Don is in surgery or being prepped.  Kaye will call or text me when he is out.  Prayers.

Jon, you're next.  Prayers there too.

Hope all the Yanks stay dry and warm.  Mush Mush Wink

As long as I know Buckeye is getting more snow than me, I'm happy. Devil

Later

PS: photo of Fred's deer feeder.  Twice now squirrel has eaten hole in side and crawled in to get corn.  Actually I walked up to feeder yesterday.  Two squirrels ran away when I got within 10 feet of them.  Hit side of feeder and squirrel jumped out the other side from hole.  Only feeder that this has happened too.  Must be same squirrel.

Will patch with metal plate and spray with rubber sealer.

Good morning! 15 degrees and partly cloudy.

Took the dog to the vet this morning for a checkup and his shots. An expensive morning to be told he is very healthy. Money well spent.

Don & Jon: Prayers that all goes well with a quick recovery.

RI Jack: Doray had both done at once. She is progressing well. She just started walking without the walker. Stiff but doing it.

Doug M: Glad to hear you are doing better. Speedy Recovery.

SJ: Keep Warm. Think SUMMER!

Enjoy the Day!

John

Sorry Buckeye.  It just started snowing around 5:30 [5 1/2 hours later than forecasted].  Not going to accumulate like forecasted.  Down at the farm [east of I 95] will get the most.  I think they now say Roseyville will get 1" to 3".  Should be gone by 6 AM.  Big thing is tomorrow's high will be 27.  Little melting.  Chuck over shot again and snow cannon also backfired on you Yanks.  Laugh Laugh

Good evening all,

Good, busy day at work.  The outside issue person still has not created a totally viable solution yet.  Maybe IT will go away.   Good drive both to and from work as roads were clear.  Had a nice walk outside at noon today.  Laz, good advice on the marks as the last time we did send a biopsy for some items removed.  Doctor himself said it was really too early to tell as it could be and most likely is scar tissue.  Good to hear about Don.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Good Evnin' Fellow Polar Brar Club Members,

I had another heating oil delivery today.  Took on 158 gallons @ $4.69 per for the past 30 days.  If you do the math, you can see I'm getting killed with heating costs.  The overnight temps will be in the single digits for the next two days, and we are not even out of January.  The winds are howling and the wind chill is at zero, and falling. Bang Head

I was glad to hear than Don has been repaired and that DougM continues on the mend.

HudsonJohn.......I don't have Vet insurance for my dogs but am giving it some serious consideration.  Long gone are the old days where dog ownership was not much of a financial concern.  I don't think I ever get out of there for much under $200 when all goes well.Bang Head

MikeC.....your comment on IT was funny.  My daughter's bank is going through some system conversions right now, and it scares her when she works with them on trouble shooting and problem-solving. Stick out tongue

Chuck.......glad you finally read the owner's manual for the snow cannon's targeting system.  It has been a while since the good Mayor of Roseyville had to man the weather disaster bunker.  He's probably down there ordering takeout to get his grits, reclinerizing, and sipping on a jug of special brew.Smile, Wink & Grin

Later, gang!

Jack.

IF IT WON'T COME LOOSE BY TAPPING ON IT, DON'T TRY TO FORCE IT. USE A BIGGER HAMMER.

HIC!!! A spy from the Yanks must be here.  How did he know that? HIC!!  [actually Wifey goes into baking sweets mode. that I do not need Bang Head]

Might have 2" or more.  Fine snow blowing.  None of those big pretty flakes.  Motorgraders from DOT have been by several times along with their dump trucks with snow plows.  All they do is pile it up in your driveway.  Folks flying by in front wheel drives and 4X4's.  Wait until it thaws and refreezes or gets packed hard.  What is really good about this is the Yanks are colder and have or getting more than us. Thumbs Up

Burg has been forced out and walked around and will not pee.  He never has had a problem with snow.  It is time for him to take a trip to the Vet and not return.  Lab/Golden mix at 15 1/2.  Long life.  Finn thinks it is fun and runs wild everywhere.  Wiley likes it too but gets cold fast.  Lucy goes when made but does not like the cold.  Mirra goes into litter box mode.

Prayers for Don and Doug M.  Remembering Jon too.

Sleep tight.
