LAZ – Belated Happiest of Birthing Days…..
I ended the year by burying our beloved comrade. It was a very emotional and sad day.
Central Communications toned out for Lt. Lidke during the final good byes and
there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. We had a debriefing Thursday after and
there were a lot of things brought up, all good. We looked good, acted professional.
I pray we never do this again. And this was the 2nd time it’s happened
Spent NYE at the girlfriends house, champagne toast at midnight and off to sleep.
We watched Apollo 18. I was home by noon and got a few things done.
Work and firehouse duties have filled my days as of late. Last Friday
after the storm, I went to a fire call, shoveled out the sidewalks,
the driveway and the neighbor’s house and did nothing after that.
First time in months. Absolutely nothing. It was nice.
Looking like deep freeze here tomorrow morning, in the single digits, and no,
I DON’T miss Florida!!

Even though half the country is shivering in below zero temperatures at the moment, and I live in that half, I managed to have a good afternnon at the Great Mall of the Great Plains yesterday. Our customers were all but non-existant, so I was able to fix three ailing locomotives (a 2035 2-6-4, a 2328 Milwaukee GP-7 and a N&W GP 9.
And this afternoon I bought a couple of baby madisons to add to my pullman train that I head up with either a 1666 or 2026. I also finished the resurrection of another O22 switch that was corroded and rusty, and covered with forest green texture paint . Next project will be painting replacement aprons on old ALCO FA's.
What a great way to begin the 2014 new year.
Good morning all, this talk about the cold weather in the East is giving me the shivers. Good luck to you guys. Went to TTOS meet yesterday and picked up a track cleaning car which was made by the seller from a Lionel NYC postwar gondola car with a sliding pad underneath. Used with denatured alcohol on the pad. There were some good buys at the meet but I did not bring enough cash with me. I saw a RailKing Big Boy go for $400 like new in the box. Also a C&O allegheny for the same price as well as a gas turbine from U.P. and an SP cab forward in premier for $400. It was proto 1 but still a good price. The cab forward was one of the early ones with the ugly face but I still wouldn't mind having it. My friend Larry bought the Big Boy and I told the guy with the cab forward that I would buy it if he didn't sell it this time.
Need to start undecorating the house from Christmas today. Son will take down outdoor lights tomorrow.

Buckeye and Bob.......my Dad used to work on the ore boats coming out of Lake Superior from the Mesabi range down to the steel mills!!!! When I was a kid, the Mackinac bridge did not exist!!!! Thank you for the pictures, Buckeye.
Bob......The reasons I used so much gas in the snowblower during the 24" snowfall: the drifting in single digit and below zero temps was horrendous with the sustained winds above 35 mph; my city plows missed my curb by about 3 feet and I was widening the road while locating my mailbox; the wife made me snowblow a 30 ft. by 60 ft. area where the dogs could relieve themselves in the back yard; and I had to cut a path from the front of the house to the back for the oil delivery guy's future deliveries, before the mess turned to ice with the consistency of concrete.
Youse guyz West of me are getting hammered by the cold weather while I am enjoying Chief's weather.......high 40s, rain, bad fog, and melting snow, flooding locally. Nonetheless, my temps tomorrow night will be like yours from today and tonight when the front reaches me. Due to the blizzard last Thursday and Friday (school cancellations) my granddaughters are back in school for the first time since December 19!!!!! They are depressed.
DougM lives near my in-laws in Illinois and according to the National Weather service he might have hit -20 last night. I hope he is OK.

Mornin' ; Rain beating fierce on the windows last night. Snow almost gone. Temps to take a nose dive tonight. Gonna hunker down and let mother nature take her course. Been disassembling the house of Christmas decorations, Whew!, what a chore. Real fine photos of the locks Buckeye. My New Years resolution is to lose an ounce or two; a pound seems a bit out of reach. Also, I hereby announce that I will thoroughly enjoy the Bronx bums implosion; on and off the field. I can't imagine the joy the sports writers will have in covering those misfits. I can see them licking their chops in anticipation. They really should be grateful to write about such interesting characters. Let the soap opera begin! later.

Here in Wausau it is a bone chilling -24 on my deck and the wind chill puts it at -45. Schools and businesses are closed, but I have to go in to the office. Northwoods......as you know, you live about 60 miles South of where my grandparents and my mother lived many moons ago. Rib Lake. North of Medford off Route 13. You guys are tough! I remember as a child visiting my grandparents when it was over 25 below. My cousins/Aunt/Uncle were up there too. Our parents and grandparents sent us all out to play but not our dogs!!! I wonder what they were trying to tell us.

RT........the Chief's Southern cell phone carrier management doesn't know the difference between Fahrenheit and Celsius and sent out the Celsius reading. 61 degrees F is 16 degrees C.!!!!

39 here and going down. Getting to -5 tonite. No Hunting for me til Wednesday? Gonna do some work on layout, making mountians out of foam. Took my recyclables to our center and found lots o Styrofoam there. So me seeing that I can use this for layout grabbed it and will heat knife it up today.
Glad to see the fudge Packers loose.

It is 20 degrees. Going up to 20 degrees. Below zero tonite.
Today is an easy day. We are staying home and making a big pot of homemade soup. Keeping warm.

The 325 Flyer is up a running. Managed to clean up a circle of track and we have smoke and Flyer chuff now! I need to see if I can fix the headlight bracket and put in the new e-unit fingers which are on order and I think she will be good to go. This engine actually belongs to my director. She got it from her great uncle.
Also spent some time working on a friends 4 track portable recording studio. The tape wasn't functioning correctly and he got it for free so I told him I would take a look. Never tinkered w/ a tape player before so I figured it would be something new. Drive belts were shot but I did managed to get it running by using a couple of o-rings we had running around here. Managed to get some sound out of it, but it managed to eat a couple tapes. Next time I'll need to bring some headphones and some tapes I don't care much about. This must have actually been used at some point as there is a cigarette burn on one part of the case:)

Speaking of which, anyone who is interested in rail snow plowing should find a copy of 'Plowing Mountain Rails'. Talks about the early designs and the development of the Leslie steam rotary. I've had the opportunity to stand next to two of these in fairly original condition and they are awesome!

Rained most of the day. A little snow coming down now. Just heard all state offices are closed for tomorrow. Cannot remember the last time that happened. When I used to care about American football, San Diego was one of my teams. I see where they won today. I spent most of the afternoon getting the second floor done on the Halloween house. Looking pretty good. Talked to all 3 kids today. All are doing ok. I hope everyone has a good day.

Evening all been a soso day today. Buckeye you need to reaim the cold air blower its now getting a little to far south its suppose to cut off in N.C. and not reach here in S.C. we are suppose to be like 15 tomorrow night and 19 Wednesday so your aiming a little to far south now.

Got taxes done ( yes I know IRS won't start doing them until the 31st) but at least there done and filed.

Buckeye, ice breakers on the great lakes are a waste of tax payers money. Common sense says that you do not use ships to ship goods during the freeze. You use the rail roads. Actually, I really feel for those folks and the ones that have to work the great lakes during winter.
It is not cold in Ohio, but those guys in Michigan are freezing their you know what off.
One the coldest jobs is to walk the lines as the boat eases into a lock. This is a view from the lockmaster's tower office looking west. On the far right of the photo is Canada.
These two boat are waiting for the Coast Guard to free a stuck tug boat so they can run the channel south.
In the 1950s, Rail ferries plied the Great Lakes. This is one of the rail ferries at St. Ignace in the winter. I think a car ferry is in the background.
The auto ferries were replaced with the bridge. Ice breakers keep the channel open for boat traffic between Chicago-Detroit-Cleveland-Buffalo.
And the Chief thinks it is cold in Roseyville.

14 tis morning here and gonna get freezing rain later. Went out yesterday with Flintlock. Got out at 245 and stayed in woods till 524PM. Cold at18 when leaving in truck. Saw 11 deer at 505PM about 70yrds out. Waiting til they got closer about 50-60 yards, it was 515PM. Brought gun up and pulled back hammer, put sight on big fat doe and couldn't see front sight, DAH! To dark! Watch deer walk away then left woods. Got to get some fluorescent paint and dab on front site. Coulda been done yesterday? Oh well got this week yet. Came home cleaned gun and helped WIFE make Shepperds Pie, real good. Ran trains for an hour, NO PILE UPs. Watched 99th Pa Farm Show for an hour went to bed.

JACK, I know what you mean, easier going down then getting back up. I have that problem too. I wish my knees worked better. My MINNIE has about the same thickness of fur as your Dobermans. Its the Chihuahua in her and when she is outside even with the neoprene coat on she is humped up and shaking.

Good mornin' y'all from Cape Ann Taxachusetts. WHAT DJ SAID.......looks like we are twins weatherwise, but it did get as low as 3 degrees last night. I missed most of the NFL Wild Card games yesterday as the wife and I were entertaining the daughter, son-in-law, and the grandchildren last night.....some very exciting games or so I could gather from the Sports news last night. Observation: don't get down on the floor to play games with the little ones when a table is available. After all of the snow removal my muscles were not accomplishing the up-and-down so well. Actually, getting down on the floor is easy but thhe reverse can be another story. FIFE.......AF RAY, HUDSON JOHN, and JOEY D are in a funk about the prospects for their old and decrepit Yankees for the upcoming seasom. Today we begin the process of de-Christmassing the house. My wife went wild this past December and it will probably take the better part of a day to accomplish the mission. Later, gang. JACK.
