Chief....How can a pipe freeze when the low temperature is 50 degrees?
It is snowing hard and 5 degrees this morning. Hot coffee is the drink of the day. We are under a Level 1 Snow Emergency this morning. It has been reported that all of the Great Lakes are frozen. Freighters from Chicago to Cleveland are still moving, but the locks are closed to Superior.
This is a photo of the closed Poe lock. Note the rectangular inlet/outlets on the right side.
I found the perfect job for the Chief, who loves the warm waters.

Hi GUYZ,
11 here tis morn. Getting up to 27 here warm wow!. Tomorrow 32? Worked a little on my mountain, hooked up some lites and gotta do more work before pics. Have about another week til done? I hope slow and steady but I am pleased so far.
JACK, we go up to ACADIA, BAR HARBOR, for about a week. This summer we will go up to where GOD lost his shoes at BAXTER St. Park for a day hike to KAHADIN to see the start or finish of the AT(depending on where you started or ended. I was up there 38 years ago when I was in college. 6 of us went up there for spring break. We had to dig into 4 ft. of snow to pitch tents. Great fun but I was young. We spend the nite in Sturbridge Taxachuteets before breaking into Maine and visea versa on the way home. We are going up there tis summer July 6-14.
DOUG DA GRUMP sounds good with the sausage. Hot Italian is great!!!
CHIEF, froze pipes, sounds personal to me?
BUCKEYE, now that's COLD!!!
Stay frosty my friends,

RockIsland52My friend Ron continues to struggle in the hospital. He had a colonoscopy last night that came back "unremarkable" which means they found no cause for his symptoms. Gastroenterologist is in the mix, so hopefully a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan can be laid out.
Jack, Have they tested for C-diff? They may be overlooking the obvious.
My folks fought it for months a few years ago.
Prayers for those in need

Good Mornin' Y'all From Tropical Cape Ann Taxachusetts,
We are having LAZ weather, clear and 13, may see freezing 32 today. We are off to Maine for dog training this afternoon. I hate the drive but the dogs need the work. Raven "came into season" but looks stylish in her panties.
MikeC......man, you seem to be getting more snow than the rest of us recently. Chuck was supposed to re-aim the snow cannon but must have gotten the distance adjustment wrong. "Shovelling....." Don't you have a snowblower?
DougM......hope your nurse is not spoiling you too much but that you are feeling better.
LAZ.....my Dad pondered during his first visit out East when we moved here: "It is amazing how much wilderness there is out here on the East coast, like the newcomers and pioneers bypassed the coastal lands and headed inland."
Did you see any moose when you were in Maine? Bar Harbor is 190 miles North of where we are going to train the dogs today (about 275 miles from home), and we go through that area when we compete at the canine obedience trials with Maximus in St. John New Brunswick, another two hours North of that. Beautiful country, a hunter and a fisherman's paradise.
Buckeye.....glad you got Chief the inside track on that scuba job in Northern Mi. but I am afraid they won't have a wet suit that fits him. Thank you once again for the pictures!!!
Chief.....that is what you get when you hire Southern workers. Try some Northern transplants next time.
RT.........Buckeye granted permission to celebrate your birthday for a full 7 days in honor of your new career. SJ and Chuck are ready to begin your loafing and napping lessons with an assist from HudsonJohn.
JoeyD......I wonder, did you ever finish cleaning up leaves? You were still working on them in December! Do they have forests in Japan, or are you just a "one leaf at a time" sort of guy? A Yankee fan in a state of depression for 2014, can't get motivated?
Later, gang. I have to go out and pick up the puppy Pam and I bought RT for his birthday. Got him a mastiff so he won't have any problems finding the doggy piles in his yard; and he can train the pup to straighten out any unfriendly neighbors.
BTW.......California boys, hang in there. Only 62 days until Spring, give or take a few. Hope you are not running out of SPF30.
Jack
IF IT WON'T COME LOOSE BY TAPPING ON IT, DON'T TRY TO FORCE IT. USE A BIGGER HAMMER.

Banks.....I don't know what they have done for Ron. C-diff, or diverticulosis with a bleeder were what I was thinking. But what do I know. A gastroenterologist continues his quest. Clean colonoscopies 2012 and again night before last. Ron might be released from the hospital this afternoon if things go well. But no, there still has been no diagnosis of anything. And no update this morning from the wife.
Home Again Home Again and it feels REALLY good. After two years of planning we made a bucket list wish come true, traveling to FT. Lauderdale and staying two nights with friends. Then boarding the Celebrity Century for a 15 day cruise through the Panama Canal--stopping in Columbia, Panama, Cost Rica, Guatemala, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas and finally, San Diego. We enjoy LaJolla so much that we stayed 4 extra nights and simply relaxed, didn't even rent a car, that turned out to be a wonderful decision. The last 30 hours of our trip home were not so much fun, we left SD Friday noon on a flight to Houston to catch a connecting flight home that would be easy shmeasy, wrong. Because of the ice storm in the east the flight coming in from Atlanta was delayed for several hours so they kept delaying our departure time. Long story short -- at 11:00 pm they finally cancelled our flight, ugh. We scrambled and rebooked for yesterday going through Chicago and then DM, I won't even tell you what happened on the tarmac in Houston while we were waiting to take off but we did make it home late yesterday afternoon. The home place looked wonderful.
After traveling through central America we realized we have so much to be thankful for, we are truly blessed in the USA. The folks that we met in south America and central America ware wonderful but yet there living situations make it difficult for them. I'm sure glad we were able to finally make this trip, it was worth it.
Jon
So many roads, so little time.
Good Afternoon! 29 and Sunny @ 2 PM.
As the cold continues the wood stove keeps the house nice and toasty. Daughter Michele and SIL Bill coming over for dinner later. Got some train time in and picked up new storage bins for spare parts. Looking forward to York!
Fife: There will be plenty of Lemon! We will do it like last year, right after the picture on Friday.
RT: Enjoy retirement and the layout!
Chief: Good save on the plumbing!
Buckeye: Got the shivers just thinking about that job. I liked the pics.
Laz: Doray is talking about hiking the AT. I told her to get better first!
Jack: Prayers for Ron.
Jon: That trip is on our bucket list also. Sorry about the flight home. Glad you enjoyed yourself.
Joe D: It is great when all the Volunteers come and work together.
SPMan, Ray I am very careful when I buy used Modern Engines. I agree, you may be bying someone else's problem.
Enjoy the Day!
John
Afternoon. Busy day. Just got back from 8 year old Wifey's Niece's Bday party.
Warmer today but breezy. Tomorrow is going up to or close to 60 degrees. The back down rest of the week.
Going to the farm tomorrow and service deer feeders and cameras.

Frank -- I do have surgery scheduled, Wed. morning 8:00 AM. I know this sounds strange but I'm anxious to have the surgery completed, it's something I should have done last fall but with the recovery anticipated I didn't want to worry about walking during the Panama Canal trip. The Dr. agreed so it's full speed ahead, need to get a hair cut and drivers license renewed before Wed. The medical description is Achilles Insertional Calcific Tendonitus, they open up the heel and cut the tendon and then remove the huge bump of calcium on the heel then reattach the tendon with screws to the heel, YIKES!
MichRR714 I've been in doors working on the basement.
Is that a dark shadow on your face or something to prevent frost bite?
Good afternon all, I was up at 6:00AM this morning and down to trackside at the Metrolink station in Covina California by 7:00AM to see the big boy parked there on display for one hour. Picture taking was next to impossible with all the people right up against the engine. I heard they had a problem getting it out of the fairground because the brakes on the steam engine would not release at first but they eventually got it fixed. They had the 4014 sandwiched between two diesels. The 4884 and the 1996 which is the heritage unit. I guess the UP 4884 represented the wheel arrangement on the big boy. They also brought along 10 hopper cars for extra braking power. It all pulled out of Covina at 8:30AM enroute to West Colton about 45 miles away. It is probably there by now but I'm still waiting for news about it. I came home after it left Covina and went to Church with my wife. Trains magazine had a live feed of the engine at times but it was spotty to get anything on their website. They may have more later today. I just checked a minute ago and got a blank video screen. If I see any pictures I will post the link.
You can see some videos of the move on OGR forum under Real Trains. Maybe something on Trains website, Trains.com. There is a lot on Trainorders.com but you have to be a member to see more than a thumbnail picture on that.
later,

Chief.. ah yes it is my frost bite prevention device.
Good evening all,
Good day weather wise as temps were up over 40. Going to drop 50+ degrees in the next 24 hours. Brrrrr! Watched parts of the Grammys tonight. Got to see Paul and Ringo perform together, and the Highwaymen as well. Close finish at the Rolex with Bourdais as one of the winning drivers. Got the truck out today to run some errands. Medical check on skin tomorrow. Should be ok. I hope everyone has a good day.
Keep on training,
Mike C. from Indiana
Grammys was unique to say the word. They even had Madonna re-marry 30 some couples that wanted to renew their vows. Right up front were two men. Also guys who wore Darth Vader and Robot suits [and would not show their faces] won two. Young lady from New Zealand won two. Her performance was sick.
Special prayers for Shake and Bake [surgery Tues. morning to redo some of his original bone mending] and Jon E. for his surgery [Wed.].
Off to the farm tomorrow. High near 60 [if not above]. Then temps drop and may have significant accumulation of snow Tues. night and Wed. That means a few inches here. May have more east at the farm [like last week].
Sleep tight.
Konbanwa and Ohayo Chuck,
It was 27 degrees when I went out for my 7-mile run this morning and it felt great. I wish I would have woke up earlier so I could have run longer. The workday was uneventful and I left at a decent time. The wife made sweet and sour meatballs and roasted vegetables for dinner. It was the first time she made sweet and sour meatballs and they were great. I think I’ll have a cup of coffee and finish the latest CTT.
RT – Your layout is coming along nicely. Thanks for sharing the progress.
Jack – I did not finish raking the leaves. We had so many that the last remaining amount seemed puny so I left them alone. Thanks for reminding me – I just offered the older son a few bucks to finish up that bunch tomorrow. We’re ready for baseball season; the Yankees are a shoe-in for the division this year. Also, the older son and I will start his spring training in a few weeks.
Jon – I’m glad you had such a great trip. I agree; we have so much to be thankful for as Americans. I’ve seen many poor places in our world to truly understand that. I hope your surgery goes well.
I hope Don B. surgery goes well also.
Sayonara,
Joe
Heat wave here tis morning at25 with high of 31!!! Going to walk my 5 miler to river and back with my MINNIE dog. Then continue work on my mountain, hope to be done this week? Made nice progress yesterday. Really like what I did even WIFE liked it.
SHAKE & BAKE and JON prayers for the surgery. Hope all goes well.
CHARLIE, I 'm not messin whith you with that weapon,WOW!
HUDSONJOHN, If you and DORAY come down this way on the AT, its only about 10 miles from my house, I'll have some OL MILs and a cookout waitin for you on to of Peters Mt. just above Harrisburg. Gotta replace those lectrolites.?
CHUCK, I see you and BUCKEYE are scheming to hit the CHIEF with the SNOW CANNON. Better give him an extra dose of SNO HI O!!!!
Mornin' FellasNot much going on... just some project planning and vacation planning. Speaking of vacations... no York this year for me. We are planning two family vacations so I'll need to bank my time. As for OSes. Windows7 Home Premium at home and Windows7 Ultimate at work. Windows8 is designed for touchscreen devices (phones, tablets, Surface, etc) if you don't have a touchscreen monitor it is a bit cumbersome. 8 is built off the 7 platform with a different interface. I have not messed with it enough to know if you can which it to run like 7. I have heard a bunch of rumors that Microsoft is no longer updating drivers for 7 and also hardware manufacturers are starting to drop 7 from their supported OS list. If this is the case it will be the fastest OS in History to lose legacy support.

Morning. Warm and cloudy. Off to the farms down east to service feeders and cameras. Tomorrow will be different. Temps drop tonight. Then tomorrow evening down there, snohio. Here a dusting to an inch or maybe nothing. Would love to see a few inches here. Mostly an eastern NC thing to the coast [which might get freezing rain].
Hope all have a great week.
Prayers for Don B. and Jon.
Later.
Good Mornin' Y'all From Tropical North Shore Taxachusetts,
I'm sharing others' weather temp wise about a day behind......but very little snow. We will enjoy high 30s today but then the bottom falls out again. May hit single digits overnight and that is what the lows will be for the next three days.
Chief......I'll come down and help you out with frozen pipes......nothing that a few gallons of gasoline and a match can't rectify.
Mitch.......you look quite menacing holding that nail gun. Just don't put a couple in your own carcass.
Don and Jon........both of you will be in my daily thoughts and prayers this week for a great outcome on your ortho procedures. Success is seldom a point A to point B journey. Up, over, around, or through. Hang in there. All of us here are pulling for you guys. If we tease you, it is not because we are insensitive to your situations. We truly want you to reach your post-op targets.
JoeyD......you and Jon are so right. Poverty and destitution are relative terms. When one travels abroad and off the beaten path, reality sets in.......
Well, my friend Ron was discharged yesterday from the hospital with no diagnosis of what has been ailing him generally and GI-wise the past month. Thus far all tests have come back negative. They ran a bunch of additional tests before he was discharged and the results will be forthcoming. He is glad to be home as is his wife. Fingers crossed it is something benign and treatable.
My son is back at work, no more issues with kidney stones for the time being.
My son-in-law's Mom is healing from her fall Friday night at home. Just staples were required to close a sizeable gash an the back of her head. SIL's advice when going through the ER.........pack a lunch and a whole lot of reading material.
Pam and I spent yesterday up in Maine with a heap of friends training dogs, followed by pizza and beer/wine back at one couple's place. As you drive further North from my place, it is fascinating to see what sprawl and open space do to the way people live and react to things......the culture. What I see as "the country" they see as things getting a bit too overcrowded. The 90 minute drive home with the dogs at the end of a very long day was not enjoyable for me, but the wife got in a good snooze while I listened to satellite radio and the dogs Maximus and Raven snoring.
Later, gang.
Good Morning! 41, (YES 41, the weather guesser said a high of 37 but @ 10:15 it is 41) Overcast with temps dropping to 9.
Today it is a haicut and then take Doray for PT. She is making great progress. Doctor said that she is ahead of the motion range expected so soon after surgery.
Chief: I will take that as a compliment! I did spend vacation time in Ocracoke, NC. I used to go Goose hunting there in the winter with my Dad and his Best Friend Leo, then spend a week or so there in the summer. Made some good friends there. We were treated like family. Last time there was in 1985. The Island changed and the only one left there that I knew was Jim Tetter.
Charlie: Big Progress on the Basement and Train Room!
Jon: Prayers for your surgery and recovery.
SPMan, Ray, Thanks for the Update.
Mike C: Good luck with the skin check.
Don: Prayers for your Surgery and Recovery.
Joe D: The Sweet ans Sour Meatballs sound good.
Laz: Thanks for the Invite. It will be a while before she can do that! Maybe we can meet for dinner one day.
Brent: Sorry to hear No York.
Enjoy the Day
Jack, you slipped in there, Prayers for Ron that they find out what is wrong with him. Good News about your Son and his Mother in law.
Good Morning from Blueberryhill........
Good Morning, Joe......
It is a sunny 40 degrees. Going up to 47 today. Snow is melting.
Today is a busy day. Wife is grocery shopping locally. The city of Cambridge is under a level 2 and the roads to it are bad. I am doing a few chores and the lunch. Maybe a nice nap , later
Prayers out to all that need them. Lots of surgeries, lately.
Cheerios on the dining car for breakfast.
Y'all have a great Monday.
Chuck
Hello all
Somewhat overcast here in the Ol' Pueblo today.
Right rear flexible brake hose is replaced on the 4dr. The left will have to wait until I can order a pre-bent line. I ended up twisting off the short piece that goes from the hose to the wheel cylinder. Bill was able to bend a new one to fit. We also presented the sheet metal to the Corvan. So far, so good.
Jack - turbo will not fit on the Corvan w/o serious mods. The engine sits rather low for the rear loading area. Toyed w/ the idea of putting one on the car, but I'm guessing it would prob run too hot in the summer. Will stick w/ the dual Rochester Model H's.
Dennis - yeah, it seems the unusual tends to have an attraction for some. It also helps that they made like 2 million Corvairs. Makes parts fairly available. Would like to see the 'innards' of a Fiero some day.
SPRay - good to hear the news on the #4014. Will have to check out the websites. Hope you can get the Northern fixed. For steel parts and gears I really like the Lucas Red & Tacky grease. For plastics I use the Labelle teflon stuff.
'Clawde' just got two new 'roomates' (crickets), that is until he decides to eat them...
Today, a haircut is planned, work meeting, pick up the shocks, and maybe some more car work.

Good morning all,
Prayers for D.Baker and Jon for upcoming surgery.
Kind of tired from getting up too early yesterday to see the Big Boy. Had runny nose all afternoon and took some cold medicine to stop it. Slept soundly last night.
Went out to eat last night and had prime rib. It was yummy.
Our son is returning from Daytona tonight.
Bought a lot of stuff yesterday for the swimming pool which was suffering with fall out from the fire in the hills here. It was getting a green tint so I got some stuff to get rid of that and a lot of super chloronation with filter running for 12 hours. Will recruit my son to vacumn it tomorrow and then add some other pool first aid stuff.
Morning fellas and gals: Balmy 30 degrees here. Great spectacle for hockey yesterday. I won't mention where they played but you could look it up. Weather was perfect for out door hockey. Brings back good times when my sons started playing pond hockey. They would be playing now but the lake is partially drained to build new dam. later.
Think good thoughts, do good deeds!
