Banks

No more news on the fallen rider. Thanks for the prayers.

Jack...... I like the name Raven. I must’ve missed you getting a puppy.  My Raven got bit by the Electric Fence while meeting the cows. Now he thinks they did it. He tries to sneak up on them and barks like crazy every chance he gets. How do you recommend we break him?

Banks......I have kept the fallen rider in my prayers all of these weeks and will keep him there, front and center.Angel

Re the e-fence.....I will PM you tonight.

The summary:  Raven can be taught to respect your fence and the property boundaries and realize that it IS the fence he needs to respect (after you).

Dogs love to fence fight.  They have a natural territorial instinct.  And they all have prey drive to varying degrees, regardless of breed.

The simplest and quickest solution to correcting an off-leash dog is an e-collar for the dog with a remote control (like hunters use) so you can control the goings on from a distance (quarter to a half mile depending on the unit).  They work with collar vibrations, a tone, and/or a zap.

Just like the dog will not mess with the wire e-fence because the "corrections" are "meaningful" yet fair/consistent (I have a wireless one to contain my dogs on my property), Raven will likewise respect your commands with an e-collar and remote control, first time and every time, no matter how riled up they get, no matter how distracted they get, no matter how far from you they get.  Training on the proper, humane, and effective use of the ecollar is important.

The Collings Foundation's Wings of Freedom Tour is arriving today at the Beverly MA. airport with their WW II vintage and historic aircraft, just 3 miles Southwest of my house.  A B17 just flew overhead!!!  The planes will be here through Sunday, both on the ground and in the air, with rides in all three available and on-the-ground tours also conducted.

In August and early September they toured airports in Trenton, Belmar, Millville, Cape May, and Morristown New Jersey with their B17, B24, and P51 Mustang.  Also this Summer, they visited locations in PA. Ohio, CT., NH, and Maine as well.  After MA, they are off to RI, CT, NY, MD, and GA, winding down their annual Northern swing.  The planes winter down South somewhere and do tours down their.

I never miss them when they come to town, and it looks like Sunday for me.  These planes are awesome, whether stationary or in the air, especially when they make low level, full throttle passes over the airfield.  I can get some pretty good video and still shots right from my (newly refurbished) deck off my kitchen.  Time to break out the camera!!!!

Buckeye.... The snow cannon is all tuned up and pointed at the center of Roseyville.  Ready to go.

Good job, Chuck!!! Thumbs Up According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, we will have plenty of snow and cold to use for the snow cannon.  Roseyville, the home of massive amounts of hot air, will of course be warmer than normal, but the famed Ohio Buckeye Snow Cannon will provide them shock and awe in January.

Jack, does Raven have the same schedule as Maximus? Or does Maximus know his own routine.

Doug........Maximus has his own routine and is lower maintenance because he is housebroken, only eats twice a day, and doesn't have to be supervised (chewing).  We can get by letting him out three times a day.

The reality is that you want to treat the older dog with preference in everything, kind of like the #1 dog in the household.  In that way the older dog doesn't come to resent the puppy interloper and will accept the pup as a lower pack member.  And you treat the puppy like the lower pack member.

Consequently, we feed both dogs and take them out (Maximus first out the door) at the same time, etc. so Maximus doesn't feel like he is the second fiddle.  He gets fed first, played with first, and gets attention first, and is trained when the puppy is napping in the crate.  He gets house privileges the puppy does not.....we confine her to the kitchen and outside for the time being to minimize puppy collateral damage.  When the chewing and the housebreaking are under control, Raven will be granted more freedoms.

We limit the time the dogs spend together because Maximus is too big and plays rough.  We also want the puppy to bond with us first, not as much with Maximus.  In that way the puppy learns that we drive the bus and we decide everything.  If you get two dogs that have a stronger bond with each other than they do with the owners, they tend to "monkey see monkey do" and each will have a tendency to blow off the owners more readily.  This is why getting two puppies from the same litter at the same time is a difficult proposition.

Last night Pam had to "correct" Raven for chewing the wrong stuff (her bed, yet again).  Pam's tone of voice was pretty serious.  Maximus thought he was in trouble, but I soothed him as reassurance that the puppy's poor behavior would not be tolerated.

I realize a lot of folks may think this stuff is overthinking and overkill.

But when you own large breed dogs with protection in the genes, you have to set the tone straight from the outset so that there is no question:  they must defer all decisions to the owners, regardless of what their instincts are telling them.  In that way we get dogs that are reliable, obedient, compliant, and safe in all situations.  We get dogs that we can have comfortably around our family, friends, strangers, and other dogs, around the home or on the street......anywhere.

Dogs are not fur kids, and that is where dog owners get into trouble.  You can't rationalize with a dog.  They are dogs, and they neither think like nor react like humans.  They think and react like wolves, with far fewer but with strong, more basic instincts   You can't simply love and nurture them into obedience and good behavior.

A mother dog is the best study.  She teaches the puppies and is absolutely consistent.  Corrections are immediate and no-nonsense.  She rewards the good behaviors with nurturing.  And she can control a whole litter of puppies.

Aloha. It seems like Summer has returned along with thunderstorms. This weekend, our town celebrates its centennial with a festival at the new lake (they took 20 years to convert the quarry pit to a rec area). Looking forward to going there tomorrow to see the local garrison of the 501st Legion (a bunch of dress-up Star Wars enthusiasts - they are quite fun).

Jack, does Raven have the same schedule as Maximus? Or does Maximus know his own routine.

Good evening all,

"My" soccer girls won 6-4 after getting 4 goals in the first 10 minutes.  It was a close game the rest of the way and a real nail biter.  It was a good win for Senior Night as 3 kids played their last home game ever.  Work was worthless today.

Jack, congrats on the new "baby".  Cigars? Wink

Chief.....thank you.  "Baby" Raven is a holy terror.

We started her formal training today, working on improving her attention on us, her jumping on us, her chewing of us, and her desire to drag us all over God's creation when on a leash.  There is an old saying that a tired puppy is a good puppy.......and whoever came up with that pearl of wisdom knew exactly what they were talking about.

We have Raven on a precise schedule of eating meals (3/day), drinking, play time, naps, and the ever-so-important pit stops outside......all outlined in a book our trainer gave us.  Outside of the schedule, when she starts sniffing the floor and/or looks at the door and then at you, the worker bee (me) better hop to it or there will be an accident on the floor.

When the puppy does what you want outside, you immediately mark the (positive) behavior in the puppy's mind with a tasty morsel of some sort.  Dog's catch on fast.  Maximus still realizes the routine and often will go to the door if only because he knows he'll get a treat when he finishes outside.

Funny thing, with the detailed schedule from the book we can pretty much predict when Raven will need to go out:  first thing in the early morning, after a nap, after playing, after eating, or after excitement.  The schedule from the book is actually pretty spot on, and even a knucklehead like me can be successful.

Puppies' bladders can usually hold out for an hour to an hour and a half for every month old thay are, provided they are on a schedule as mentioned.  Three month old Raven is actually getting through the night without issues (11pm-6am) because of the schedule....with the last meal at 5pm, the last water at 7pm, and the last 'outs' at 11pm.

One other point: the dog crate is your best friend and is to be used liberally when you can't keep a very close eye on things.  Otherwise, your rugs, furniture, cabinets, electrical cords, eyeglasses, cell phone, remote controls, and anything else that the puppy can reach can and wll be chewed up.

We feed Raven in her crate, and in just a week it has become her private restaurant, puppy cave, and a place of shelter and safety.  She will go in and out of it on her own already or without a fuss.  If we do this right, she will soon go in there to take a nap on her own.

I was feeling sorry for Brent when he was recently posting about severe sleep deprivation due to his son's routine and schedule.  Now I don't feel so bad for him. LaughHe should have read my dog book and used a dog crate too. Laugh

RT........thank you for the kind "offer," but after the Summer I have had--- with the carpenter, exterior house painting, deck refinishing, and road trips to Canada, Illinois, and Pennsylvania, and with the expense of a new puppy---I am tapped out.

I applied for a loan for your 736 set at the First National Bank of Roseyville. But one of the bank officers they called Fast Frankie turned me down because he took issue with the fact that I was a Yankee and was buying from a person he referred to as a carpetbagger from the "Nawth."Whistling

Jack that doesn't surprise me. As he wouldn't know a good investment when he saw one he gave me a engine just because it was PRR Big Smile I was very glad to get it and have charished such a great engine for a while but the first thing I did was make sure it wasn't filled with cement Grits
