Well I received my order from Trainworld. I really like the looks of the Williams SD90. We'll need to see how it runs. Three of the long sections of track were damaged. I can fix two of them but the third one is to flat on the end. At first they were going to have me send it back for replacement but after I ordered more they are sending me a replacement plus I get to keep the damaged one. So I can cut the damaged one down and make it work. The box the z1000 came in was roughed up by the track but the transformer itself looks undamaged. Off to sneak a little work in on the layout.

Have a great night all. Kev have fun on your trip.

Fife,

Fred Gwynne and Joe Pesci were priceless in that movie.  I loved it when Vinny was staying in the cabin and the owl woke him.Laugh  That whole movie is great.

Kev,

You could move  to southwestern PA.  The police aren't even around when you need them.

SJ,

Cut grass earlier, which is something I look forward to.  Having a high quality (John Deere) mower helps.Thumbs Up  I don't miss fighting with the Lawn Boy every time I wanted to use it.

Back from Bowling Green, Ky. about 11pm last night.  We now own 5 wooded acres on a hillside.

About 80 here today.  Hearing a few thunder rumbles tonight, and the temperature is supposed to drop tonight.  Sleet and maybe even snow is forecast for Thursday and Friday.

There was some sort of Corvette event last weekend in Bowling Green.  The hotels were full and Corvettes were everywhere.  On Monday, we saw a couple of 2014 Corvettes with manufacturer's tags driving around.  Good looking cars.  I like their looks better than the last couple of generations of Corvettes.

Picked up the 2013 Lionel Signature catalog recently.  I really like the Burlington Zephyr and the Neil Young signature series Texas Special.  But, the price on those is a little steep.  I do like the Ford pickup MOW vehicles.  I'll probably put an order in for one of the MKT versions.

Sumbob - Neat pictures from the VLA.  One of the companies I used a long time ago to build some production equipment also built some of the components for the VLA antennas.

All for now.

Good evening all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 70s.  In days gone by, this would have been opening day at the track for the 30 days in May.  Now the activity is compressed into 2 weeks.  Not sure that is progress.  Got to play soccer tonight.  Only 4 kids showed up and there were 3 adults.  A good time was had by all.  Will feel it tomorrow.  New (unannounced) policy at work may or may not be restricting internet access.  Nothing is in writing.  Go figure.  Got too much work to do to worry about it, but it is more annoying than anything.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Went to the loan place I do business with and refinanced my loan for a lower monthly payment. Got it lowered a bit and I'm happy with it. Don't owe a payment until next month and didn't need to pay anything this month so I put the money to some use.  I don't get this chance often. Got some stuff from Wal-Mart that I've been needing. Also did some digging around on the net and found two new Bachmann locos, a GP40 and a GP38-2, both PC and DCC. Picked them up at a good price. Also have two DZ125 decoders on the way. There's three packs of Athearn geep diesel horns coming and some specially selected diesel rebuild parts. In two or three weeks I should be able to get started on rebuilding the Bachmann Spectrum/Plus GP40 I have. Also got first half of the grocery shopping done. Second half happens on the third.

Hello all

Another long day out at the site, but not quite as long as yesterday. I'm typing this tonight at an early 10PM.

We got quite a bit done today. Moved the telescope and removed a number of parts. I got to dig into the chiller system which uses an a/c system to cool circulated glycol coolant. Similar to the ones we have back on Mt. Graham, but this unit is big enough to climb into.

Really beautiful spot out here. I've driven I-25 a number of times visiting family in Colorado and I've been less than enamored w/ NM south of Albequerque. Never managed to get west of Socorro or east of the small town of Reserve. Magdelena has been on my must see list for a while and I finally got there, well at least have driven thru it a few times.

So as we work disassembling this thing, often you look up to find the VLA (which is currently in its closest configuration) has moved. Kind of interesting to see.

Here's the apex of the 3 legs seen from our work site:

And here's the 'little' 12M antenna we will be taking home:

Those aren't scratches on the dish. We apparently have a resident owl. In addition to dumping on the surface, he has yacked up the remains of his 'rodent helper' dinners on top of the secondary. The picture I posted earlier was taken from the top of one of the four feed legs.

Since it lives in corral fencing for safety reasons (keep people out of the swing radius) and was built in Italy, my buddy and I are referring to it as the 'Italian Stallion'.

It has the craziest drive system I'll try and explain later. Let's just say you don't get too close to certain areas w/ metal objects.

The rail mounted transporter was out today as well. I'll try and get some pics at some point, but maybe not this trip, or 'campaign' as the engineers are calling them. Can you tell this was organized by someone who was never in the military?

Well the longer I mess around on the computer, the less sleep I get.

Good morning. It's 63° with 100% humidity. It'll be cloudy with a fair chance of rain. The high will be 75°.

I have no particular plans for today though the work area on the layout needs some tidying up. I haven't yet sorted out all the stuff that I received yesterday. One of the boxes I looked in contains a rotary snow plow kit. Looking at it I wondered if maniacal laughter was echoing off the walls as it was added to the box. I'm in west Louisiana and the scenery on my layout is set in the same type area. What am I going to do with a snow plow? Could be some oddity for the local redneck brain trust to look at and ask 'What the heck is that thar thing?'. Maybe it could be labelled as a giant mobile steam powered snow cone maker. Though I'd hate to see the block of ice you'd need for that baby! And not to mention the catch cup! Step right up folks! One good spin of the blades with a suitable block of ice serves 2,500! I wonder how many I caught sipping their coffee right at that moment.

Time to get on with my day.

Spent the first day at the VLA site today working on dismantling our 'new' telescope. Here's the view from the office:

You guys are gonna dig how they move the array around. They've combined radio telescopes and railroads for meBig Smile Too bad the one we're taking apart for shipment isn't on rails.

Bob.........I had a couple of semi-intelligent questions for you re this picture and the ones you put up after it.

But my mind kept coming back to humorous, sophmoric observations.  Like "this is a picture of what heaven looks like to a soccer addict who wants to get live broadcasts from every single soccer game in the world simultaneously (MikeC). Smile, Wink & Grin

A 27M dish?!  In that picture, are they all that large?  What do a few dozen of them clustered together get you?  The entire sky at a single point in time, moment to moment?

Good Morning, 56 and Sunny down the Jersey Shore!

Great Night at school last night. It was the Autobody 1 class and I had a friend of mine who is a rep for Fusor and he demonstrated plastic repair.

Kev: Good deal on the UD! Have a Safe Trip and Enjoy yourself!

Redfire, Jim: Nothing runs like a Deere. Mine is 23 years old and just keeps on going!

Bob: You work with some cool stuff.

Charlie Brown: You are moving in leaps and bounds.

SPMan, Ray, Fife: My Cousin Vinnie, 2 yutes! I worked with guys from Jersey City and yes they actually talk like that. You should have been down the Panhandle in Florida on storm duty as the Chief Lineman from Jersey City was talking to a "Local Resident" and the local told him in his Southern drawl that he talked funny! Laugh

Time to paint the wishing well for Doray.

Enjoy the Day!

Good morning all,

V8, that fire in Riverside county must be the one in Banning North of the Interstate 10.  I got a fine ash floating on my pool this morning from one of these fires I would guess.

Fife, Fred Gywen (check spelling) was perfect as the Southern judge in "My Cousin Vinney".  I knew some in Virginia that sounded like him.  Same with the prosecuting attorney.  Notice how he sugar coated all the questions to witnesses testifyiing for the prosecution.  I agree on the funny scene where Vinney unloads a revolver at some unknown danger from the cabin in the middle of the night.  I'm still laughing when I think of it.

I have just about digested all the photos my son brought home from his trip to Virginia and North Carolina.  He was able to photograph a spot on the original Norfolk and Southern Railway where we got off a train during WWII.  Rode the train because tires and gasoline were rationed.  The station is gone now but the tracks are still there.  Railroad company is gone too but is now operated by a short line over some of the line. It's called the Carolina Coastal.

Grits were probably originated by po folks.  They were cheap, hot and filling.  Beats the heck out of eating bushes. Vinney says, "what's a grit"?

later,

Ray

When TheQ and I were in training to adopt children from Russia we were informed the orphanages served 'porridge' to the children and while filling it did not provide the nutrients needed for proper developmental growth.

So ask:

What is the difference between oatmeal, porridge, gruel, and grits...

Hello all

Back at the site. We seem to be winding down for the last day of this 'campaign'. We may have a conference call on the road tomorrow morning w/ the Italian engineers who built this thing. Should be interesting.

We just schlepped a bunch of dead UPS batteries. Note to the designers: Do not place 34 batteries in a cabinet w/ no insulation and forced ventilation on an exposed structure which often faces south, in the south western USDunce

This is a cool site. Besides the trains moving telescopes, they have a LOT of cool military surplus. Takes me back to my youthBig Smile

Jack - each VLA antenna is 25M wide (about twice ours) and weighs over 200 tons. There are 27 antennas (w/ one spare) on 3 13 mile long legs. Depending on the science, the array can be moved from its current close configuration to a 26 mile radius. The reason for all the antennas is two things: 1) collecting surface area and 2) angular resolution. What you are trying to do is make a really big dish. More dishes gives you more collecting surface and the bigger the spacing allows you to have better angular resolution. You can see more detail at a greater distance. My telescope has the record for the highest resolution yet done in astronomy when we tie in w/ other telescopes around the world. We have been able to see features at the center of our galaxy and prove that at the center of the galaxy is a black hole. Before our observations a few years ago that was just a theory. The optical comparison of this is being able to see the stitching on a baseball sitting on the surface of the moon, from the earth. Of course we don't have the infill that the VLA has since the most we've tied in is maybe 5 dishes. but we have 1000's of miles baselines rather then 10's of miles. Now you ask, why is my dish 12M instead of 25M? We work at higher frequency. The higher the frequency, the smaller the wavelength. And depending on what astronomical object or molecule you are looking at, you may use different frequencies.

Back to work.

Good Evening:

Wishing Well is painted and Doray is Happy! Her and I had a great day today. After I finished the wishing well we took a drive to pick up some depression glass that she bought an hour away. We came home and she went to the ice creram shop. I repaired a PW 685 Hudson, replaced a truck on an observation car from my son's WW2 Troop Train and serviced the rest of the set. She just got home so we are going to relax with a nice glass of wine and watch some TV.

SJ: We use Windex Outdoor Glass and Patio Cleaner on the windows. Just hook it up to the hose and go. It cleans great and dries streak free.

Blown Out: Good Luck with the Doctor Visits.

Have a Great Evening!

Evening all!

A long day today. Too many of these in a row. Looking forward to the weekend. Have a lot of projects to do around the house.

submmbob - cool stuff! Adjustable phased array antenna farm. Another way to say what you explained is the spacing of the antennas changes the focal point, antenna pattern (I.e. footprint of the receiving beam width), and focal point.

Supposed to start raining tomorrow night and rain all weekend and much cooler temps. This area in Tennessee is nearly 9 inches ahead of last year on rain.

Hope everyone has a great day tomorrow!

Nice day today. I actually got out of work two hours early. Once I got home I got the lawn mowed which seemed to grow 2 inches over night. I received my second package from Trainworld today. It was my Rolling Rock caboose. Looks real nice. Can't wait to see it on the track.

Speaking of track. I ran out of screws again. I have one section to put a couple braces in then onto legs.

Have a great night all

Been a busy day. I put together the rotary snow plow kit. That required quite a bit of cutting and fitting parts. It still needs a few pieces that will have to be made for it. What will the Sundown town council do with a rotary snow blower? They're going to add a bunch of small steel blades to the rotary wheel, enclose the front and add a dump tray and conveyor to the bottom of the enclosure so they can dump in paper by the truckload. A steel duct will channel the clippings into a semi trailer. That's right. They are making the biggest rotary PAPER SHREDDER ever seen in this part of the country. Leave it to a bunch of rednecks!

My father and I went to dinner in town at the Los Mayos restaurant. He had enchiladas, beans and rice with sweet tea. I had two tacos, a beef enchilada and chili con queso with a Dr Pepper. Plenty of hot sauce.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.
