Good afternoon.

No work tonight, so that means more time on my P-38. Hope to have the propellers and turbosuperchargers painted by the end of the day.

Hello all

Up a few hours early to take over for my co-worker. They needed his room since we have more folks coming up tonight. I will be taking my new Swedish friends back tomorrow. We will have an Italian, a Swede, and an Austrian (who works in Sweden) staying here tonight. Plus one rather eccentric electrical engineerGeeked. And of course one ex-Navy carpenter, maintenance guy, mechanic, hardware store manager, geologist who took an interesting detour a few years agoWhistling

More weather on the way for the weekend. Will I ever get the bike painted?

At least I'll have time to package up a 1615 and discharge all the photons that may have stuck to itStick out tongue. And dig the tender out of storage. Maybe I'll grab a couple cars for the new 0-8-0 to drag around.

Our engineer should be arriving. He is going to be turning up our hydrogen maser that we use for our long distance observations coming up soon. Guess I should go check on him.

Evening Gang!

Mid 50's today and freezing tonight.

Brent - we were on trip quite some years back and the kids were babies and in child seats. We also had a pair of Llhasa Apsos in the car. We stopped for gas, I got out, and the wife got out also. I started to fill up and this guy next to us decides to walk close I guess to see the dogs? So the dogs go nuts jumping up and down and then I hear "Click" . The doors lock. I left the keys in the ignition. Hmmmmm. The wife comes back and I ask "you have your purse (spare keys which we always keep between us)?" "Uhhhh nope, my purse is in the car." (Note: when does a woman go to rest room without purse? Wife starts to freak out. I think for a minute (we are  2 hours from home) and assume I will end up calling AAA or locksmith. Then I walk over to the passenger door where the dogs had stationed themselves and start tapping on the window which drives them nuts and Viola (!) the doors go "Click" and I grab open the door before they "Click" again. Whew, lucked out on that one. Kids never woke up until we hit the road again.

Kev - let's face it, when one is retired and has a tractor and a PU with a snow plow, of course snow is fun!

Have a great evening all!

Regards, Roy

Evening all,

Laz - Lowes has the Krylon H2O paint.

Jim - I opened up the air box tonight; looking forward to seeing if it helps.  Going to do some research on tuners.  I've read it improves both fuel mileage and performance.

Ray - What some wear to Church does amaze me too.

Take careMay God bless

Had to do a couple of things for my father this morning then worked on the UP and BN FP7's off and on the rest of the day. I had some handrails left over from the dress-up kit I used on the primer gray FP7 yesterday so I ground the molded on hand rails off the back doors of the BN unit and replaced them with the metal hand rails from the kit. There's a few more I'm going to add to it but it won't happen today.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

V8Vega

Latest forecast Wed. 59/45 Thur. 58/43 slight chance of rain Wed night. 70% chance Thur. night. Rain is a big deal here.
My friend and I go shooting once a week unless its too cold or one of us has a obligation. We used to attend gun shows regularly and years ago the state Democrat party was going to add a tax to every bullet so I really stocked up and have been shooting them ever since but am getting low now. There is a company at the gun shows Wholesale Ammo that sells at a lower price than anyone else.
Since Obama got in the gun shows are so crowded and expensive to get in plus a hour or more drive each way we quit going so today I got one box of 38 for $24.99 + $2.24 Calif. tax = $27.24 for 50. They only had one box and no 22, 9mm, or 45. So at that price 100 cost $54.48 or 1000 $544.80. I used to get 1000 reloads from Wholesale Ammo for $100 so assuming the price is now 1000 for $300. maybe we should brave a gun show. You have to get there early because its a long wait in line to get in and Wholesale Ammo brings semi trucks of ammo and sells out on the 1st day.

Snow has stopped.

Dennis, You should think of moving to NC, or maybe move into Chief's box. Leave the place you can't say a anything good  about and seem to hate behind. It is still a free country.Wink

Heck 59/45 seems cold to me.Wink Wink

Konbanwa,

The weather was unseasonably warm again today – maybe SJ should consider spending his time in Japan since their winters are milder than Michigan’s.  The workday went a little slow today due to many briefings/meetings.  The wife made breakfast for dinner tonight: homemade biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, and pancakes.  It’s time to do some schoolwork now.

Doug – I hope the wife’s back heals quickly.

John – Happy Birthday to Doray!

Hi GUYZ,

Everyone south of us has SNO HI O.  Not a flake yet.  Hope it stays like that.  WIFE has off school she teaches in Harrisburg and they have snow.  Got to call up BRASSUERs today and order a R2LC board for my K-line Shay.  The Shay runs only at high speed and won't react to the Cab 2 throttle.  Called up and talked to BOXCAR BILL from OHIO and he told me probably the radio board.  I did order a Cruise Commander M from him that I needed to upgrade my 0-8-0 that had some lurch problems.

CHUCK, a little more South with the CANNON and you got him.

FISH and DOUG M, tanks for the tip on the H2O paint.  I don't want to stink up the whole basement.  I'll be in the dog house for sure.

Stay frosty my friends,

Morning giz.  I saw Baltimore on CBS news and it was NOT white yet.  Maybe Fifey will escape the big snohio during his shift.  Cloudy and windy here.  Snow up at the lake house and some NW of us.  Schools closed in Mecklenburg Co. VA [lake house].  None expected here.  Took flags down as might hit 50 mph.  Got reports to do and bills to set up on computer.

All stay warm, dry and safe.

Later.

Good Mornin'nY'all From Ominous-Looking Skies Taxachusetts,

Thank you each and all for your kind comments and prayers for my SIL's Great Aunt's passing.  Monday night's wake was well-attended and likewise yesterday's funeral, well beyond our expectations.  It got me to thinking.  Have I touched as many lives as she has in such a good way that my services would be so well attended?

It was positively uplifting to see that so many cared about her.....cared for her not from afar but up close and personal.  Aside from family, she stayed so active in her church and local civic activities.  She never complained, even when age and her health intervened.  She just kept on truckin' and never missed a beat until the last few weeks.  She lived her life to the fullest and never looked back over her shoulder.  She made every day and every encounter count.

The family had pow-wowed Monday morning.  I was asked what I thought about exposing the grandchildren to the wake and the funeral, what can and usually does turn into a "sadfest."  My response came in the form of questions:

"When do you think it is appropriate to start teaching the little ones about the circle of life in real terms, in very personal terms, not those preached to them in school and in church?  Don't they deserve their memories of their Great Aunt as they are able to remember?  Don't they need to say their good-byes in their own way?  Don't they need to see in an unvarnished way that they are not alone in their own personal grief and their sense of loss?"

The granddaughters attended the whole process start to finish and are better for it.  The atmosphere at the post funeral luncheon was postively uplifting as the AuntJ stories were casually and freely exchanged, one after the other, the ones that brought smiles and laughter and fond memories to the forefront.

Aloha. Well, yesterday worked out for the best. I had decided to stay home with the bride who was barely able to move around, but the day of rest did her good. And the university closed early because of the snow and cancelled my last class of the quarter. It snowed all day and up to about 10 last night for a total of 8 inches by my trusty yardstick. Of course, I had to go out during the day and late last night for a last attempt at breaking through the snow-wall left by the plows at the bottom of the driveway - the little electric Toro was a champion help there. Had a nice quiet day otherwise working from home and playing with Ivor. Looks like a quiet day in Chicago's Loop today.

Good morning. It's 40° with 60% humidity. The high will be 60°.

Hopefully I won't be interrupted today and I'll be able to clear some of the junk off the layout. Yeah, right! And maybe pigs will fly! I know that as soon as I get a good start the darn phone is going to ring. Someday I'll probably yank that thing out by it's wires! Well enough about that. My E-R Models Rock Island FP7 should be arriving today. From outward appearances there's no difference between the E-R Models unit and the 80's era Atlas and Con-Cor units. I'll find out when I open it up for inspection and cleaning. I'm running a train this morning that has three FP7's as head-end power. Two 70's era Atlas/Roco units and a 70's era Atlas/Roco-Athearn hybrid. They're running OK but I'm not particularly enthused with the sound coming from the lead unit, the primer gray FP7. Did I miss something in the inspection of the gears? Maybe it's the motor making that racket? I was pretty thorough with the gear inspection so I'm betting on the motor. If it is I have a PPW motor that should work in it just fine.

Good morning! The winds are cranking and the Nor'easter is starting. When I got out of school last night it was 27. when I went to bed at 12:30 it was 34! This morning when I got up @ 6:00 it was 36. Now it is 33 and the temps and it just started with a drizzle. Forecast is for rain/snow, and coastal flooding. Sigh

Doray says to thank you for the Birthday Wishes. We had a Great Time at the Jack and Jill Ice Cream Tasting Show in Philly.

SJ: I hope my snow deflector works as well as yours.

Kev: The blade on the loader is a great thing. We did that at work a number of years ago on an older Kobuta. It worked well in tight areas.

Brent: I remember the ear infections days quite well. My kids were not that bad. Christina is a stinker and I enjoyed the lock out story.

Probe, Jim: Good luck with the job. Hopefully this will be your break.

Jack: I am glad that everything worked out with AuntJ's funeral. You did a great job with the granddaughters.

DougM: I hope your wife makes a full recovery with her back real soon.

Chuck: I had my Cheerios this morning.

Everyone in this storm's pass, I wish you the best and be safe.

The Nor'easter forecast from tonight into Friday morning.  Heavy coastal rains accompanied by snow totals all over the map..... from 3"-6" coastal (me) to 9"-12" inland and North.  55 mph winds. Coastal flooding at high tides.  15'-25' sea swells off shore.  There!!!!  A Cliffs' Notes version of the weather and marine forecast instead of the useless, never-ending drivel the meteorologists throw at us.

I am so relieved that the TSA is on top of things and has seen fit to now allow me to bring my knife onto commercial aircraft but not my boxcutter or more than 3.5 ounces of mouthwash.  SurpriseBang Head  Great progress.  My taxpayer dollars working FOR me. Whistling  Bang Head

DougDG......I certainly hope that your Docs can get your meds squared away so that you aren't too pooped to enjoy stuff. Angel

HudsonJohn.........so help me out.  How is it that your 29 year old wife is married an old fart like you? Whistling  I hope she had a happy Happy B-Day yesterday.  What personal item did ya get her to stay out of the dog house?

DougM......I was sorry to hear that your wifey is feeling UTW with her back.  No fun.  Angel Maybe sending her out to do some snow shovelling will help her loosen things up.  Just don't let her get anywhere near you with a shovel unless you are wearing a Division I  NCAA-approved football helmet. Smile, Wink & Grin

RT........was glad to hear that your back has improved.  That many hours on your feet would have a healthy back barking!!!

BOB........your post got me to thinking what I would spend my money on if I hit the lottery.  I have a plan.....trailer my dormant, garage-sheltered 1969 Corvette to HudsonJohn's automotive class and, under his supervision, let his students make it road worthy again.Thumbs Up

Jeff......you need to place a moratorium on train projects and actually start enjoying the fruits of your labors more. Thumbs UpSmile, Wink & Grin

LAZ..... re your post about those early POT days, I feel priviledged to still receive "incomings" from the Chief.    Laugh

KEV......I hear you when you say that most often neighbors don't appreciate a neighbor who does all of the heavy lifting with the snow (plowing, etc).  Around my immediate vicinity, some folks have snow removal services (truck and crew with shovels) that show up when they get to it.  With my snowblower, time and again I have helped out several of them when they couldn't get past the end of their (city-buried it) driveway, excavated their mailbox, or had to re-excavate the end of their reburied (end of) driveway after their service had come and gone.  Do you think that once, JUST ONCE, they could ask their snow removal service (and pay them if asked) to take a quick pass ot two with their plow truck to remove the lion's share of packed snow/ice blocking a buried fire hydrant we all share?  Nope.  Not once.  They sit around and expect someone else to dig it out it, every time.  No sense of common courtesy.  No sense of shared community responsibility.  No sense of thanks.  But plenty of time to loaf while someone else is doing all of the work!!! SoapBox

JimmyT......was glad to hear that the interview went well Thumbs UpAngel

V8 Dennis........you seem to be on such a great roll with the del Sol.  So what color are you going to repaint it?

Brent......I had a smile on my face throughout your story about Christina with the car keys locked in car.  Then I read Roy's road trip snafu with his wifey and his dogs.  I swear that the women stay up at night thinking of ways to circumvent the men's backup safety measures.  At least twice a month the wife and I are out somewhere and my wife asks me for the car keys.  "Well, dear, you now have both sets.  The primary ones you took from me 10 minutes ago and the backup set you have in your purse."  I may need to get a third set with the fob and hide them. Bang Head  Just renewed my AAA coverage but never want to get caught out on the road waiting for them to arrive to unlock the car.  A call to On-Star (GM) can unlock my SRX, but I refuse to pay for the (another) subscription service.

Brent........we went the on again/off again chronic ear infection routine with one of our two kids.  Chief's solution put an end to that when it became apparent that the frequency was not diminishing and each incident was always an excruciatingly painful episode.  Those tubes worked!!!

Jake......I have to agree with HudsonJohn......I really like the Hudson's, the ones with the Berkshire class boilers.  Unless you are independently wealthy and can afford a postwar 773, the smaller ones look good, can haul a bunch, can operate effectively on a smaller diameter curve with no problem.

Pat.......you've got 12"?  That is impressive.  WhistlingLaugh

Fife......  "white death!"  I have to remember that one!!! Thumbs Up

JoeyD.......breakfast for dinner is one of my favorites.  I am going to have to crank up that menu item because I just read where the freezer life of bacon is relatively short.....and I have about six pounds of it.  My wife always observes "You made far too much bacon.  What are we going to do with it all?"  If that is so, then why is there NEVER any leftover bacon?Laugh

Later, gang.

Good morning guys,

No more snow, Sent it east. 27 degrees with a bit of a wind. East west roads are drifting. The wife is in bed sleeping. She decided not to go in today. We got about 10" out of this as far as I can tell.

Got the dark side of living on the lane with a tractor that has a loader and plow.7: 30AM I am still sleeping when get a call from the woman two places down. Can you plow me out??? Eddy is stuck in the driveway. Eddy is the idiot who was stuck yesterday too. 18 years old and not a brain cell in his head as far as I can tell.  So I get dressed and work my way over there. Plow around his pickup truck to the house and they are just looking out the window at me.  Confused  Finally Luke the older boy comes out and I ask him if they have a chain,,, Nope. Bang Head Okay I will go get one and you two meet me at the truck. I come home and get a log chain and go back. Eddy just stands there dressed like he lives out by V8Dennis or something. I tell them you guys pick where you want to hook to the truck so Luke picks the front stabilizer bar.  Hmm  I tell Eddy to not gun it because if the tires are spinning you are not helping anything out. He looks at me like a deer looks into headlights. Indifferent Tractor pulls him right out, Luke takes off the chain and Eddy drives away with out even so much as a thank you. And I wonder why I get grumpy. Dots - Sign

Jack I am not counting on a big turn out at my funeral.  Laugh

Oh yeah I remember the snow. Thats why I live down here. It was great when I was younger but have no use for it now. Like to look at it in pics its so pretty but thats as far as I want with it.

Evening all not a lot going on here. Had a good day at work today. Felt good being back to work back a little sore after being on my feet all day but still felt good.

Now I remember why I continue to live in California.  It's the weather or should I say the lack of it.  Been there done that on the snow.  Don't need any now.

Mornin' All.

Jack, Commonsense triumphs again. Thinking back to my youth that's the way it was always done but now anytime something happens, regardless of the degree of severity, it's summons the counselers. Reminds me of that old song "Send in the Clowns".

Spent the day at the museum yesterday, it was free Tuesday and they had an open line so at the last minute I went in. Last head count at about 3:30 was 2K +/- visitors. A few minor electronic gremlins but went well, no pile-ups.

Plan on doing some more weed pulling today, got a week to finish it up for trash/yardwaste pickup. Whistling

A very belated Happy B-Day to Doray. Embarrassed

Dennis, Remember the old adage "People rise to their level of incompetence". This is Gov. Moonbeams second time around, need I say more ? Or worse yet what does it say about the Ca voters ? Smile, Wink & Grin

Later all.

Remember the Veterans. Past, present and future.

Hello everyone.

Some work tonight and some tomorrow night. So a little extra money in my pocket.

No homework to do.
