BTW.......that Lionel link you provided did not bear any fruit.  The engine and the set was an uncatalogued, limited run.  I pucnched in several different descriptives in the search engine, including set number and the cab numbers, no luck.  Thanks anyway for the link as it will be very useful in the future!!! Thumbs Up

Jack, Send me more information like what type of engine it is the part number of it and anything else you can and I will look for you. Kind of got some sort of gut action going on today keeping me close to home. If you know what I mean. Tongue Tied

A lot of times on that Lionel site it will not list what you have but you can find it under another road name. Usually the first release of that style of the Loco. Also I will look for a parts breakdown that may also show you what you need. My dash 8 40C NS would not show but I found it under The Dash 8 U.P. engine. Same guts different road name. it should have something in there seeing it is a 2008

Greetings Again, Y'all,

SJ.......shopping with Granny.  I can just picture your joy and excitement.....NOT!  Whistling

Roy.....have you gotten at least enough precipitation over the past few months to mitigate the danger you had of your foundation cracking?  Hope you get over the crud, not fun.  Angel

JoeyD........I can certainly relate to your frustration with the Trainworld purchase.  I am going through the same thing with a furniture purchase (damaged in transit, returned to factory before delivery to me, re-ordered) saga that began November 17.  This stuff is my Christmas present to my wife, no less, and she searched for two years to find just the right stuff!  Up front it was:   "In stock, ships in 7-10 business days, you will have your furniture in your home no later than 12/13/12."   In my case, the $ was paid via bank card up front.  Furniture or no, I will have the charges disputed/reversed this weekend, within my bank's terms, conditions, protections, and disputes window.

After a lot of BS on the other end, was told yesterday the replacement shipment on the reordered furniture finally would be shipped by tomorrow.  The furniture company will discover sometime next week they have been "unpaid," then things should start popping.  BTW, I am dealing directly with the furniture company's (useless) Corporate Sales Manager by direct dial phone and email re this fiasco.  The President of that outfit is next on my hit list.  I WILL get my wife's furniture but I WILL NOT be hung out to dry $-wise.  This time around they will be paid upon satisfactory delivery and installation. Bang Head

BOC.......ya gotta love it when the wifey is pushing for your hearing test.  Mine insisted my hearing was shot and that I have it fully tested.  A full blown audio test (in a sound booth) showed my hearing overall is in the "better than average" for-my-age range in all but one octave. "Read the results and weep, dear!" Now if she would just consider for a moment that she can't be 1-2 rooms away, mumbling in a low voice, facing the other direction, with the TV on and water running in the kitchen as the source of this alleged "deafness" I must have...... Laugh  Even my kids tell her the same thing.  It goes in one (of her) ears and out the other.  She actually thinks I may be ignoring her!!!! Whistling  Perish the thought!!!  ME??????

DougDG.....I for one are glad you got checked out by your Doc on this crud thing.  Better safe than sorry.  I sure am glad that we have flu shots.  Problem is, read on CNN and then heard on the local news there is a huge national spike in the incidence of flu right now, and the peak flu season has yet to arrive. Thumbs UpAngel  Chief.....hope you got checked out as well.  Same goes for Rich and many others.

Jeffrey......quack quack quack.  It must be nice to be able to do some fishing right from your front door. Laugh  Hope today finds you feeling a whole lot better too. Angel

8n........I usually make all of my deposits and withdrawals at an ATM.  I get photocopies of the deposited checks right on my receipt along with account balance before and after.  The transaction appears on my (available on-line) running statement immediately.  Driving to my bank and then standing in line for the next available teller is not my cup of tea.  My closest walk-in bank is two miles away while the closest ATM a half mile.  My walk-in bank has a big sign asking folks to get off their cell phones while transacting business, a request that is ignored by the folks too busy yakking and texting to pay any attention to such courtesies.  They should send those inconsiderate knuckleheads right back to the end of the line "to learn 'em"  but won't.  Same is true at the grocery store at checkout.  Drives me nuts. Bang Head

Lehigh......how are your "all nighters" coming along?  I remember those far too well.  Working and going to school sure can take a lot out of you.  Keep up the good studies and hard work!!!!  Thumbs Up

KEV.....re dogs and pets, things were a whole lot different than 5-6 decades ago when you and I were kids. had a stay at home mother who made sure the dogs were taken care of....by the kids.  There were no such thing as dog nutrition, formal training, or the advanced level of veterinarian care we see today.  While I agree strongly with you that some (too many) folks beat a dead horse from a medical perspective (old age, cancers, etc), a torn ACL, diabetes, allergies, bloat, a treatable heart condition, a broken hip/leg, or an eye ulceration which essentially used to go untreated (or dealt with using humane euthanasia) are now considered bread and butter treatable, $$$ notwithstanding.

Was glad to hear Dad (you) could throw his not-insignificant experience and expertise into the duaghter's vehicle purchase, pre-owned or otherwise.  I told my son that the wise man uses all of his resources when entering uncharted waters, no sense in the both of us making all of the mistakes I did through trial and error.  That (his first car purchase) drew my son much closer to me......he got to participate in the research, my mechanic's once over, and then sit there, shut up, listen, and learn while I handled the negotiations.  He was totally shocked when I got pre-purchase repairs done by the dealer on his prospevctive car without a price change (below blue book) and then his financing from the same dealer, with no co-signing (he had inadequate credit history) at the tail end of the deal.  We had fun together on that one. Thumbs Up

BTW.......that Lionel link you provided me did not bear any fruit.  The engine and the set was an uncatalogued, limited run.  I punched in several different descriptives in the search engine for the manuals, including set number and the cab numbers, no luck.  Thanks anyway for the link as it will be very useful in the future!!! Thumbs Up

Chief........did I actually read that right, that you are actually relaxing a bit?  Now THAT is a first.  What is your Doc doing for your crud?  Get well!!! Angel

Rich.......was thinking of you, Mr. MOPAR, last night while watching Velocity TV's "Desert Wrecks," I think.  A 1971 Dodge Challenger resto and a Superbird thrown in for good measure.  Also featured was a brandy new SRT Hemi Challenger in black. Thumbs Up  Hope most of your crud has dissipated as well. Angel

BO........John Lennon(?) once said life is what happens to you when you were busy doing other things, or something of that nature.  Retirement is the time to make up for lost time on the many important things that had to be satisficed earlier along the road.

DougM........a Murphy bed?  Laugh  Your advice and that of JoeyD, an under-the-bed layout for Brent's Christina, is great!!!!  JoeyD actually posted pictures of his boy's UTB layout project, impressive stuff.. When space was an issue for my family, my Dad actually mounted and hinged one entire side of a framed 4' x 8' train board/layout to a wall in our basement and proceeded to glue, nail, or screw everything down permanently.  At that size and weight, it took two six year olds on opposite ends (me and a friend) about 30 seconds to swing the board up into position and then drop/lock the opposite side support legs in place.  Plug in the mounted transformer and we were set to go!!!!  My Mom foolishly figured that this set-up would provide her space to save a lot of junk.  But I was always remiss on the back end of things, returning the train board to its former flat against the wall, out-of-the-way position when I was done playing. WhistlingSmile, Wink & Grin

Later, gang.

And BTW people can and do go over the top on pets pouring out cash to keep them alive but coming off the farm there is a limit and a place where you teach you kids the rightness and kindness in putting an animal down. That is never easy but sometimes it is best and a very good life lesson.

Truer words have never been spoken.  Anyone who has ever owned a pet knows that they do become a part of the family and it's hard to let go but reality has to be part of the equation, especially when it comes to expenses.

DougDG --  we are spending a week in your old stomping grounds of Grand County, the views are simply amazing, I never tire of the sheer beauty.

Aloha. Sunny and warmer today - might hit 45 today - 47 tomorrow and 54 on Saturday - in January? In Chicago? We have less snow that El Paso and OKC so far this year. Send us your rain please, BOC and Jeffrey. First return to the classroom in 2 years last night - went well. I really enjoy it but it makes for a late night by the time I get off the 'milk train' home.  8nt, let me add my condolences to you on the loss of your cat. They are our friends. We lost our cat and dog last year - and the two kittens we got are a great solace.  Jack, you sure are right - as newly marrieds / both working, we got a dog and the poor thing was alone all day. We didn't know what we were doing.

Brent, may I echo Joe's suggestion of an underbed layout.? I made one too for our youngest. I'll bet your daughter is either still in a crib or a toddler bed - without an underside. I'd recommend moving her right to a 'normal' bed against the wall with a slide in gate if you worry about her rolling out. Toddler beds are expensive and useless  - they last such a short time. Anyway, if she is in a normal bed and you want her to be able to roll out the layout herself, try what we did - I used a 3 by 5 sheet of wood, painted it, sanded and covered the edge with that rubber edging you can get to protect toddlers from furniture edges, and put it on casters - low ones that have a 'ball' wheel - that when you grab the layout, you can easily roll out but when it stops, sits on their base. I screwed the transformer onto the base and 'permanently' plugged it into an outlet under the bed so all he had to do was punch it on - put in an oval of tubular track first, then added a switch (he was older) so he'd have something to do.  We put his buildings, people, cars, etc in a plastic covered tub next to it.  I'd occasionally dust everything off. He loved it. I had toyed with a Murphy bed sort of idea of a layout on the wall but it was too complicated for him to manage.

Chuck I just found out we have no Cheerios in the house Surprise and I have fresh raspberries Sad

Joe, No painting yet but it is coming Wink

Bob, consider those switches yours. Now to find where I put them. Confused

Jack, after today's dog talk.  I wonder how I ever grew up with two dogs and forgot how many cats. Let alone how our kids grew up with two dogs in a 22'x44' one level house. And I don't know who your vet is or where you get your dog food but they must love you. You make something so easy sound impossible. And BTW people can and do go over the top on pets pouring out cash to keep them alive but coming off the farm there is a limit and a place where you teach you kids the rightness and kindness in putting an animal down. Good mornin' Y'all From Partly Sunny Taxachusetts,

Another day, another extended forecast with no snow in it! The TVs all work (still).  The trash is at the curb, much of which was relocated to the garbage can from the refrigerator which now has more room for stuff to be thrown away next Wednesday. Stick out tongue

I was glad to see all of the condolences for 8N's loss of his long-time furry companion.  My daughter and son-in-law keep talking about getting a dog which would be a huge mistake.  Two working parents with two little ones, living quarters too small and impossible to keep picked up so the dog doesn't get into trouble or (worse) eat something that could kill him/her or be costly to rectify surgically, no yard to speak of or containment fence, the expense, no time for training the kids or the dog.  Folks who have all of this going against them have no business taking on the (10-15 year) responsibility of a dog, why the shelters have an abundance of castoffs.

Rather than lecture two adults on NOT getting a dog, every chance we get the chance my wife and I bring Maximus over to their place for a dog fix, and every Saturday the little ones get to spend time with him at our place.  Figure it is a lot easier for them to put two and two together by listening to Pam and I talk about what we and others put into a dog from all of the aforementioned perspectives.

"So and so's dogs accidentally got loose, someone left the gate open by accident, and the two got hit by a car with one dead and the other with over $2,000 in vet bills so far.  This woman showed up in class desperate because her dog bit her children when she was too busy to see what the kids were doing to the dog, said they told her they sat on the dog.  So and so's dog got bloat after eating her son's sock, and it cost him $4,500 in vet bills to save the dog's life.

So and so's dog tore an anterior cruciate ligament that cost him $2,000 to get repaired; and the quote for the cancer tests and treatment for his other dog makes the first amount pale by comparison.  The city just jacked the dog licensing fee.  We are so lucky relative to others that we are not yet getting surcharged on the homeowners' insurance policy for owning a dog.

We just spent $1,000 on Maximus's nuetering and stomach attachment procedure.  The quote to get our yard fenced in came in at $4,500.  Man is it miserable out there walking the dog in the cold and rain, but early in the morning and just before bed is the worst.  Had to spend $100 to get the carpets steamed this week after Maximus got sick from something.  I figure we put 15,000 on the car last year driving to/fro dog training and dog-related events, wish the car got better mileage to offset some of the gas costs.  The dog sure does crank up the work keeping the house clean, worse than the grandkids when it comes to messing things up.

The price of dog food is up to $54 a bag now even with our coupon.  The dietary supplements and dog treats Grammy bought last night were expensive.   The annual vet checkup for Maximus next month will cost us over $250 including shots, lab tests, and the full thyroid panel he needs. I will bet we have over $3,000 "invested" in leashes, collars, beds, and crates.  The bill for the dog training lessons is coming up,  Yes, poo patrol duty is required every week and the snow and ice sure do make it an unpleasant chore.  I sure hope the lawn comes back after the recent rains and the resulting muddy quagmire created by the dog. "

The list goes on, but the time factor and the ongoing expense is something folks don't plan on, nor do they consider the long term commitment.  The truth hurts.  So do the realities.  My daughter and son-in-law need a fish tank, not a dog or a cat, though a cat would be somewhat easier. Whistling

How is that for light reading. Smile, Wink & Grin

Later, gang.

Jack

Hi GUYZ,

Got to 44 yesterday and nice sitting in the woods.  Only spooked two yesterday out of thicket only saw tails running about 60 yards so no shot.  Today gotta go up MOMs and take down tree.  Go out to dinner with her.  Hunt tomorrow.

SPMAN RAY, I do like my Flintlock but also love shooting my SoCom with the hi cap clips.  Just a wee bit more expensive, shooting .308 as compared to a .50 round ball.  Both are a blast and I enjoy my right as an American.

RYAN, the gun I think you are refering to with the horn is a blunderbuss.  They filled them with a charge of black powder and patch the put what ever down the horn.  Nails, salt, pebbles, then shot it sort a like a shotgun.  Sprayed stuff all over.  Most of those guns were smoothbore with no rifling.  I never shot one of those.

JACK, nothing wrong with quiet.  Get out of the house and take a walk into nature, good for the soul, and heart.

CHIEF, got your e mail, will call BARRY tomorrow.

Stay frosty my friends,

Good morning. It's 60° with 100% humidity and light rain. A flash flood watch is in effect. Weather for the day will be showers and thunderstorms with locally heavy rain possible. The high will be 68°.

There's plenty of rain here. Anybody who wants some is welcome to come get it. Bring your own rain barrel.

No plans for layout work today. Surely as I get started on it the power will go out. Something strange happened last night. Not long after I signed off a sudden and I must say unexpected surge of energy hit me. Sleep was the farthest thing from my mind. So I worked on the F units for a while then on a GP35 then on an AS16. I have plans to turn the AS16 into a cabless booster unit and I have this crazy idea for a walkway running the length of the top of the chopped roof F unit slug. I'm sure OSHA would have fits over something like that on a real unit. But then they don't control what goes on in my world.

Well I've been running on this high surge of energy for a bit over nine hours now. I'm doubtlessly going to pay for it later, so if you don't hear from me later you'll have a fair idea of what happened.

Good morning everyone.

Tired again today, but I assume when you have to get up at 5 each morning, you would be a little tired, no excuses.

Work tonight, I won't really get anytime on the layout today, but I'll at least have more money for it.

Konbanwa,

It was a little warmer today than yesterday, and also mostly cloudy.  I had another quick and easy three-mile run this morning.  The workday seemed to progress a little slow today, but that was probably due to the number of meetings I had to attend.  The wife made chicken and tomato soup for dinner this evening and it was great.  It’s time to relax for the rest of the evening.

The wife called Trainworld back today to find out the status of my Christmas present.  Well, the woman who told her to call back Tuesday doesn’t work until Thursday.  The women who answered was of no help and stated, “If …. Is helping you, then you need to wait and talk to her.”  That’s poor customer service in my opinion since their systems are automated and my wife had her transaction/order number.  If it’s not squared on Thursday, we’ll be asking for a refund.  I’ll avoid Trainworld from here on out.

8N – I’m sorry about the loss of your cat.

Kev – Have fun painting.

Brent – Do you want to put the layout in her room?  If so, have you considered an under-the-bed layout?  The boys are pleased with the one I built for them.  It’s easy to slide in and out for easy access and storage.

Sayonara,

Joe

mmmmmm...Jeff...you seem to be having a lot of rain falling there....wow!!!Tongue Tied

Want some? Bring your rain barrel.

It's been a great day here. If you're a duck that is. The rain came down slow and steady most of the day with some heavy showers and thunderstorms. Rain chance tonight is 100% with heavy rain expected. It'll also be near 60 tonight so I'll have the a/c on if for nothing else to keep the humidity down. Dang humidity here can make 60 feel like 80! No layout work today. Didn't even run a train. I did watch some shows on the idiot box associated with trains though.

Here's one of two drive shafts I made for a Stewart AS16. It's an Athearn hex shaft glued into an Athearn blue box spline shaft socket. They work quite well.

Well, time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Saw the Doc today, no flu just a nasty cold & cough. Did get a scrip for an anti-biotic and some cough supressant, hope they work. Now, tomorrow I get to visit the periodontist (to quote BOC "oh joy").

Rich, How about finding a PS-1 on the bay or somewhere as a donor to replace your boards in the 4-4-0. Seems like there should be boards available with the number of PS-2 upgrades that have been done.

Sunny and high 40's again today.  Still have some snow and ice in the shadows, though.

Thanks for the thoughts on our cat, folks.

I stopped at the bank today, filled out my deposit slips, then walked up to the teller's window.  The teller thanked me for having the deposit slips filled out.  Apparrently, lots of people don't do the paperwork first.  We got into a brief discussion about how computers and technology have changed the way that people relate to each other in person - kind of goes along with today's discussion about technology.

All for now.

8N: Sorry to hear about your cat. I hope he had a long life. I've lost a few over the years myself. It's never easy.

I did have time to try out a circuit breaker idea I had for the wires behind the ZW and it looks like it will work out fine. See the circuit breaker post for more. Smile Yes

Good evening all.   Had a good day.  Relaxed and worked on the railroad.  Decided to replace the burnt out MTH switch with another one.  I think it will work out fine.  Now to start planning for the installation of the signal bridges I recieved for my birthday.   I'm goinig to use relays for train detection.

Having kind of a late supper.

8N sorry to hear about the passing of your cat.  I've lost a couple of family pets and it is always hard.

Hope all of you guys who have not been feeling well get better soon!

anjdevil2, also sorry to read that your Proto 1 loco was on the casualty list.  If your wanting to try to bring it back to life hopefully you'll be able too.  What kind of locomotive is it?

And again, I want to thank everybody for the birthday wishes!   Bo  Smile

Evening all!

Well the crud still rules my day. I am the same today as yesterday so no worse. Not confident to drive and have not been out of the house except to pick up the newspaper since Friday. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Supposed to rain a lot here but so far the rain amount is all hype and little substance. We'll see.

To all my compatriots in illness - collective cough - let's get better soon!

Let's see - Bama stuck it to ND - AND let's not forget - TX A&M stuck it to Bama AND OU Mischief

Have a great evening all!

Regards, Roy

Monday....Bang Head

Will my one and only Proto1 equipt Wanderer is officially dead.  Needs 2 boards per the Train Doctor here, here, I may ravage it for parts...unless I can find the boards.  I have tried the reset (yep I have the chip!) and nothing.  The light is pretty shiny however.....Mike's trash house is right.  At least Lionel is backward compatible....

You could always contact ERR and convert it to tmcc Big Smile

RT,

Yeah, thought about that.  It would cost the same, no doubt.  I may check into the boards, I might get lucky.  we'll see.  I may try a few other things before I abandon all hope on this one..

Yeah, still at work, too tired to drive, but soon, I have to go, I think...

8N - dittos on your feline friend.  Loved my cat, Cat.  He's still in Florida.  When my daughter holds up the phone to him and I talk, his ears still purk up and he meows to me.  He knows when its bed time and he had a place next to me on a small book case.  Miss him still.  His adopted brother Smurf, however is just a big fat tiger love bug.  Cat is more selective (ok, aloof) and just wanted my attention.  I was good with that...

Still fighting this illness, whatever it is.  Hope youse giz get better, that and is fer all y'all (that's for da Chief....)  Speakin' of which.....

Hmmm, comes to mind there hasn't been any Southern NFL teams with Super Bowl Rings as of late...like the New (Jersey) York Giants? The Pats? Green Bay? Oh, I could go on.....

And Hockey is back and my Devils will return in a week or two.......Thank you...there is a GOD!!!Bow

OK, let me attempt to go home....

I am the monster in your head...And I thought you'd learn by now, It seems you haven't yet.
