It looks like a Bachmann from the wrong side of the shop but runs smoother and quieter than my newest Atlas. Now what to do with it? This thing is just an experimental accident! It's obviously not an AS16 and it's very obviously not a GP40. What would one call this spawn of the warped mind of Dr Frankendiesel? I'm at a total loss! I look at it and my mind just goes blank.

IIABSDISEI after the morning rain and the temps got to 50 today. Feeling much better today. Decided it may be ginger snaps that could be causing the problem. Regarding the Chief's comments about a certain American football game played at the college level Monday night, I might remind him that Alabama is nowhere close to North Carolina, whom he failed to mention won the equivalent title in Women's soccer (after a real playoff, no less) and that a team from the great Hoosier state (IU) won the men's title (again after a real playoff). I also find it interesting there are football (soccer) championships for both genders at the college level while the contest the Chief was referrring to featured only the guys. Hmmmmm!!! Quiet day at work and at least the outdoor decorations are down at home. Not much else going on. TBIL and I can drive. I hope everyone has a good day.

Jack - for me the rain is too little too late.. But still have to keep the foundation wet as best as possible. We finally got over 2 inches of soaking rain since late last night. If the low pressure cell had tracked just 200 miles further east much of the rain would have missed us. East of us got a lot of rain. We need another 10-15 inches or so of slow soaking rain to replenish the deep ground water.

Pat.....it is called a surgical gastropexy. The vet surgically tacks the stomach walls to the dog's proximate tissue. The elective procedure can be done through an endoscope or through a small incision. Cost about $500-$600, less if done at the same time the dog is inder anesthesia for the castration/spaying.
There are two types of bloat in dogs. Simple bloat (intestinal tract or stomach blockage......think bowel obstruction) and torsion bloat (stomach twists) is more common in certain large breed dogs and in dogs with deep chests. Dogs that eat too much in one meal or eat too fast are also prone to simple bloat. My Doberman is considered particularly at risk for torsion bloat, the more lethal type.....he's both large and deep chested. No known cause, and the gastropexy surgery is the only pre-emptive way to mitigate the risk.
The purpose of the gastropexy procedure is to reduce or eliminate the possibility of what is called "torsion bloat" which is lethal in a matter of an hour or two of onset. With torsion bloat, the entire stomach for some unknown reason twists inside the dog, the blood supply to the stomach is cut off, and necrosis (tissue death) sets right in affecting the stomach and/or intestines. The belly distends, and in many cases blood flow to the dog's heart is seriously compromised. One has only an hour or two between the onset of the symptoms and death.
Immediate surgical intervention is required to save the dog. Cost for the torsion bloat surgery is between $4K and $5K with the prices rising from there if necrotic tissue has to be removed/excised and/or the necrotic intestines need to be resected and the good tissue ends reattached. If sepsis occurs, just as in humans, the dog may be history.
Why did I elect to have the gastropexy done? The $400 spent having it done during Maximus' nuetering seemed like short money versus a possible bout down the road with torsion bloat and the possible $4,000+ of surgery, with no guarantees on the latter.. My wife and I know at least five folks with whom we train who have lost their large breed dogs the past year to torsion bloat.
The animal control officer in Newtown Ct. where the school massacre occured.....he lost his Doberman a few days after the shooting to torsion bloat. His dog was a littermate to our trainers dog!!!! So for me the gastropexy surgery was an insurance policy of sorts.

Regarding finding an owner's manual for my steamer I got from Santa.
It is an all die-cast 4-4-2 steam engine (Atlantic?) and only came as part of set #30097, the Dr. Pepper "Doc Express." A freight set. The numbers on the sides of the engine cab are 10-2-4. Absolutely no other identifying numbers or ID plates on the cab, the front boiler plate, or underneath. The pilot truck up front has "Made In China" stamped on it.
The single traction tire in question is mounted on the left rear (geared) drive wheel and the wheel is grooved to envelope the tire side to side, to keep it in place on the drive wheel. None of the other drivers have such an indentation, so I assume this engine only came with the single traction tire. I did receive a sealed plastic bag with a spare traction tire an a bottle of Lionel smoke fluid. Probably more standard 4-4-2 stuff from the time.
The only place I could find a write-up or reference to the engine/set by Googling on the net was on Ebay. The seller of the engine available on Ebay wrote: "Custom train set" and "not individually boxed from the factory." And......."This (engine) is (from) a custom, limited edition train set manufactured exclusively for Dr. Pepper in August of 2008. It is only 1 of 1,276 produced worldwide. The Certificate of Authenticity from Lionel is incuded (with this engine); numbered 988 of 1,276."
The die cast boiler is primarily black with a silver nose (stack surround and boiler plate) while the cab in the rear is maroon in color.....Dr. Pepper color scheme I presume. I am assuming the engine is nothing more than a standard die cast 4-4-2 with different paint. Has the smoke (no fan) and the old whistling tender. Mounted underneath the cab in the back (left side) are two tiny black plastic push/pull switches which are probably to freeze the e-unit and to turn the smoke element on and off.....again, probably standard 4-4-2 fare for the time.
My train shop has promised to look for my certificate and the missing owner's manual but thus far has not found them.
My shop apparently got the set in (on consignment) and broke it up for sale, placing the stuff in one of the display cases. My daughter and son only bought the engine, tender, one (of 2) boxcars, and the matching caboose. I ran back and bought the other matching boxcar and the matching tank car to complete the set consist. The set also came with a PowerMax transformer and a loop of FasTrak, but I wasn't interested in buying that stuff and didn't ask about it.
Hopefully this is enough info. to at least find a similar 4-4-2 freight set from back when it was released (2008) where the owner's manual would be the same for the engine.
I am going to go back to the link you sent me and start looking at Lionel catalogues to see what I can find on similar 4-4-2s. Perhaps my train shop is looking for a Dr. Pepper set of instructions when in fact it might have come with a manual from another 4-4-2 set.
RT........fyi, one knucklehead working at the train shop apparently threw out the set box. The the shop owner told me he was angry about that as he knows folks like to get the boxes the trains came in. I know how you like to have your original boxes.

After high school, staying up all night with books becomes the norm. Pulled many all nighters at home and in labs while I was working toward my degree. I was the opposite of you though with Trig, College Algebra, and Calculus. Just stay focused and you'll get through fine.

Regarding the furniture snafu, angry calls/emails to the right people work IMO. Went through this type of thing with my latest tuner. Without going into too much detail, one calm followed by a later more heated phone call to the dealer at fault who was being slow and shady, two calls to the credit card co., and one heated email to said dealer's manufacturer got results. Not how i like to do things but I don't screw around when it comes to $$ to bad customer service.
Got the 726 in already from Granbury, TX. Very, very nice example. So much so that I just spent nearly double what the 726 cost to get an equally clean 2426W tender.

speaking of cats, i have been seeing more and more cats hit by cars. I know this is un avoidable at times, but it always reminds me of mine that I have had to pick up, peel off the roadway. they were some ones pet / friend. Then theres the ones no one ever "claims"
By my house on the mountian, theres a blind "S" curve where a mother cat got hit, then her kittens went to see why mommy wasn't comming, then they got hit, and I had to see this every day to and from work for weeks. There was no safe way to get them even off the road way. talk about just feeling sick.....

Ryan......my years in corporate America have taught me that being in the right doesn't help. Screaming and yelling doesn't help. Justifiably taking my anger and frustration out on someone doesn't help either, whether it was their (personal) fault or not. I lose this way, don't get what I want or need. Letting emotioms get the better of me doesn't work well face-to-face. Not via telephone. Not via email.
Staying on them like white on rice and regurgitating back exactly what they advertise, what they said, and then what they did (or didn't do), including days, dates, and times and specifics, without being anything more than direct and professional and very persistant.....that works for me.
Dealing with a decision maker works for me. Escalating matters up the chain of command, or just the mention of this possible cause/effect.....that works for me. "To whom in your organization do I need to talk to in order to make this happen?"
Now many here on the POT might say I should simply cancel the order, get the charges reversed, and just walk away from this. That it is not worth this ridiculous amount of overkill and time. That I should not accept this putrid level of service. That I, the customer, deserve far better. That I can and should take my business elsewhere, where my $ and my business is better appreciated.
The fact of the matter is that I cannot cancel this order and go elsewhere. For two years my wife has wanted these exact pieces of furniture, right down to the color and dimensions. She is the world's greatest shopper, store or internet. For two years she has searched high and low, and this is the only company that has exactly what she wants. I promised her I would get her this Christmas present, and when things went South I then assured her that she would get exactly what she wanted, come hell or high water. Both are at my doorstep. I somewhat put myself in this pickle.
My Dad used to say that something is only worth the price you had to pay to get it......but he was talking about something far more important in life than furniture or money. I can afford to stand on principal in this matter and make it happen, if it will make my wife happy. She is worth it.
PS: Bo......this type of fun stuff is what you can do with some of your spare time in retirement.

I have a feeling that it won't be any better when I start going to Penn Tech this fall, but as far as difficulty, I hope that it isn't that much greater. I do well in my Trig and Physics courses, so I'm not worried about them.
I am, however, worried about English and how I will do in that field, but I guess that I just need to wait and find out.

It's noon here now. A nice 62° and very wet. No heavy rain yet. The rain gauge reading from yesterday read full. That's seven inches! I emptied it before signing off last night. I read it again a little while ago. Three inches from last night and this morning. That's ten inches so far and more on the way. One of my neighbors is putting in a big order of lumber. Either he's working on his cabin or he's getting ready to engage in ark building.I got the cab off of the AS16. It was stuck on there pretty good and I was considering cutting it off. However a bit of prying with a small screwdriver popped it loose. The next step will be to cut a piece of card stock to fill the space in the shell formerly occupied by the cab. More on that later maybe.
Goofed off all morning after getting back from taking Finn and Lucy to groomer. 8N, sorry for your loss. They are family. So sad.
Wonderful sunny and warm day. High 60's outside.
Now to vacuum before Wifey gets home. Then some Box work.

8N, Belated condolences on the loss of your kitty. I missed the post too. We had one that lived 20 years and it was hard when she died. She grew up with my kids.
Jack, we had dogs growing up but none of them ever saw a vet. However, I think most of them were killed by cars, horses or whatever before they reached old age.
V8, they have some of those mechanical music players at the Nethercutt Automobile Muesem in Sylmar I think. They have band organs and even one that featured two violins playing a duet by themselves. Of course they also have the big Wurlitzer Organ which plays automatically.
Yesterday, my MTH class J N&W 4-8-4 decided to break a spring on the lead truck. It keeps pressure on the lead wheels so they don't jump off. The truck is fastened in two places. One at the pivot point and the other from the front on an arm that swings with the truck. The spring is shaped like a pyramid with the small end near the top and big end against the top of the truck. Will try the local hobby shop but will probably have to call MTH for the part. Looks like an easy fix if I can find the right kind of spring.
Laz, I think you have better luck fishing than hunting.

When Jack was commenting on the brightness of the stars after the rains came thru reminded me of the time the Better Half and I spent up there. On those bitter cold dry as a popcorn toot nites at 9500' elevation it was almost as though you could reach out and touch the stars.
If the Feds haven't banned them yet rent a couple of snowmobiles and go for a nice long ride or guided tour up into the national forest. At one time it was a nice ride up into Rocky Mountain National Park even though you were restricted to following Trail Ridge Road.
