Test ran my Proto 2000 SW9/1200 this morning and found that the front wheels weren't turning. A quick tear down revealed that the end of the drive shaft was stripped so the flywheel was just spinning on the shaft. Well I have no use for the switcher anyway so now I have some parts for another project.

ChiefEagles WR, light bulbs work wonders. There are things at Lowes called thermostats that are yellow in color. They come on when the temp drops below 40 [I think] and then go back off when it rises above that. You can plug a drop cord into it [or it can be plugged into an outlet] and then a "trouble light" plugs into it. I went up to the lake house and set these up this weekend. I have several of these under the house as a safety in case the heat would malfunction. I also have some under my Ranger bass boat cover inside the storage building. Two light bulbs will keep everything in the boat from freezing under normal NC/southern VA winter temps. They are real neat.

I got a few up here as well. They come in very handy.

That is one cool building Bo. I looked to see if they had any left on Saturday when I went to the Menards in Morris but they were all put away and they had all kinds of spring stuff out. What did you give it for? Last i saw they were $69.00 Next time I go I may look upstairs where they put the out of season stuff.

Goof afternoon everyone.
Feeling good right now. Lots-o-homework but still in a good mood. Looking to get some newly laid cinders glued down in my creek bed.

Slept in again, stayed up to late watching a DVD about railroading in the 30's, 40's and 50's. Watched a little more this morning while having a cup of coffee. A lot of eastern road footage. Really enjoyed seeing the PRR and NYC equipment along with some footage of Jersey Central camelbacks. Pretty cool. Ran to Menards for some glue and came home not only with the glue, but also a Woodland Scenics "Menards Cycle Shop building". They still had a few left they had put on sale.
Hey Kev, I like your idea of using bridges to connect the tracks on the two tables. You could create a valley between the two tables. Maybe put a creek or small river running underneath the bridges. In the valley there would be all kinds of scenery possibilities. For added interest, you might even be able to include a couple of buildings of some sort.
SPMan - I agree with your thoughts about duck unders. I don't have any on my current railroad for the same reason. Just not as easy to negotiate as they once were. I hope you can get the little 224 steamer lined out.
Later guys, Bo

Yes Ryan and I am , but she thought that having some popcorn and Rocky Road ice cream was more important than me flying around in cyberspace with the guys. I gave in because she has been kind of sick since she came home early on Friday and I wanted to beef her up enough to ship her back to work today so I can do whatever I want. And besides,,, it sounded kind of good to me too.
I went to Farm & Fleet and got George a new heated water bowl. Not too bad only $12.99 and made in the USA. So I filled it up and sent him outside the front door. It was not three min later and he was sitting at the back door looking in at me with a look to kill. Oh well I let him back in.
I have been thinking about not tying the two train tables together but rather connecting them with two bridges. I already have a pre war Lionel 24" long number 315 bridge with a light on top. So I would need to get another bridge but I thought it may work. Maybe do a little scene between the two tables under the bridges. What do you guys think?
Well I think I will look for a paint brush and do some painting.
Have a good afternoon.
Update: The doorbell just rang and it was the mail lady with my extra four RMT Alaska ore cars. Guess I had better open them up and check them out. Now I will have 13 little Walters to deal with.
wrconstructionDarn its COLD here. I get to spend my lunch break running home to thaw out some pipes. I have a trouble spot at the kitchen sink, every time the temp dips below 15 they freeze. I have been meaning to reroute the pipes but you know how that goes. I just dont want them to bust
Ryan......just keep the "beneath the sink" cabinet doors open with the water running ever so slowly (just above drip). A box fan on low pushing the warmer room air into there and evacuating the colder air beneath the sink will help too. This was our family drill when I was a kid and the outdoor temps remained in the single digits. No blockages or busted pipes.
I have to do something similar In my current home. The pvc drain pipe which takes the wash water from the washing machine to the sewer in the basement will freeze up right behind the washing machine in temps such as these if I dont do the door(s) and box fan thingies......knucklehead builders never wrapped these pipes or insulated the exterior walls (adequately) when they built the house...... issue on the "Northern-exposed-on-two-sides" room off my kitchen for the half bath/washer/dryer area. I am going to cut out a narrow vertical section of the dry wall and install a vent right where the problem occurs.

Bob -- thanks for the info, you are about the 3rd person to recommend Roy's Train Shop. We went past it last week but the traffic was horrible so I chose not to stop, perhaps tomorrow! Currently we are in Gilbert with family and Thursday we head up to Anthmen to close out our time here. I really like the weather here (who wouldn't in January) but there are certainly a lot of people and most of them are old, like me We have been fortunate to only hit rush hour once and that was enough. It just seems like you drive forever and you never leave the city and everyone is in a BIG hurry, not for me.
I think as we begin to travel in the winter in future years we might opt to rent an apartment for a month somewhere warm. We simply don't want to be away from the grandchildren any longer than that, they are a very important part of our life. Thanks again Bob.
Jon
So many roads, so little time.
Good morning all,
I found a place yesterday that has the filter elements I need for my swimming pool filter. It takes 8 of them in a full set. The first place wanted $271 but the second one has them for $200. Pays to check around. I will try to pick them up today and maybe my son will help me change out the old ones. It's not a hard job, it is just in a place that is hard to get to.
Feel like I might have a touch of something. Had a little runny nose this morning. Hope it goes away. I did have a flu shot though earlier this year. Went to visit friend in the hospital a few days ago. Might have picked up something over there. Who knows?
The friend who's wife was in the hospital has found a place for her in an assisted living/nursing home. He has worn himself out for the past couple of years trying to take care of her at home. He was having someone come in about three times a week but he has decided that she needs full time care. Please pray for them.
Had an old friend stop by the other day and caught me playing with the trains. He needed to borrow some old magazines and was pleasantly surprised when he found out that he no longer had to duck under my bridges to get in the train room (thanks to D.Baker and company). All of us old foggies are finding it more difficult to do the duck under anymore. I built the layout in my thirties so it was no problem then.
My friend is associtated with a hobby shop a few miles from here and recommended their repair guy to take a look at my ailing Lionel 224 steamer. It wants to run but something is binding it up. I can't see anything myself.
Have a good day all,
Ray

Morning all [yes, its still morning]. Went to workout after some coffee and TV [DVR'd hunting shows]. Trainer tried to kill me. Had me working with some folks that were advanced.
You Yanks are trying to invade with your cold air. Well, the best part is you are COLDER!!
Jim, glad to see you back.
Remembering Jeffrey.
Now to County Commissioners.
Lake has gone "sky high". Pat is sending lots of water down stream.
Have a great week.
Prayers continue for you, Jeffrey, and for your Dad and the family in this most dfficult time.
Sunny and cold. Order for the day so I slept in with George, the cat. Then had to watch Perry Mason. I may go to the store and get George a new heated water bowl just to get out of the house.
Got pulled out of the Tadris last night by the wife. Sorry guys. She made it to work today but sounds bad with her cough.
Ray thanks for the history on A.C. Gilbert. Good to know.
Roy, The shed is holding at a fine 35 degrees. Thanks.
Very well put Chief, and true.
Bob, Thanks for the Dockside update. Hope you can hook up with Jon. That would be fun..
DougM, That is a great quote. I got your PM, thanks. That was not advice, just a suggestion and what I do.
Glad your back Jim.
Sun but the temp is +3 degrees soaring up to 9 today.
No big news this morning, we have another train show to set up for on the 27th. And a nice chat last night that some missed. Poached egg on one toast and some melon for breakfast....S.J.

Good morning. It's 37° with 85% humidity. There will be clouds and a high of 62°.Got up this morning feeling out of sorts. I'm having trouble concentrating on anything as my mind keeps jumping from one thing to another. I can't think about any one thing I want to do today. No plans for anything layout related except to put away a few locos I got down to take photos of.
Good Morning
Kinda cool out here...only -1F with a windchill of -14F....nowhere near CNCharlies cccold temperatures....hence we is just cool....
Supposed to get to 4F later on..with windchill of -8F....
I'm going to be doing some work from home today. Just as well, considering the cool temperature here.....
(back!!) Redfire!!
Oh well...have a good day peeps!!!
Good Morning from Blueberryhill RR....
It is a very cold 7 degrees. Sunny. Going up to 22 today with a chance of snow flurries.
Today is an easy day. I have a few chores to do and then I will relax and watch the weather thru the windows. I plan on doing some reading and such. Lunch and a nap, later.
Dining car rolled in from "Points West". Menu is Cheerios and then I will say " All Aboard" for all "Points East".
Y'all have a great Tuesday.
Chuck
Aloha all. Still praying for your dad and family, Jeffrey. A balmy -2, and -18 with the breeze. Posting from our train which was late with a broken radiator, pretty cold inside and now turned into a local. Not looking forward to hoofing it across the Loop whenever we get in, but I'm prepared. Today is my late day so hope the van starts when I get back to it tonight after 17 hours outside. Jealous of those in Calif and Ariz. A nice, quiet evening last night, watched some Downton Abbey from PBS. i look for the train scenes. Missed the TARDIS. Will look for it tonight.Welcome back Jim. IIABSDISEI with temps in the single digits. The "saucy wench" and I worked on a jigsaw puzzle yesterday. Got most of it finished. I think we are getting better at them. I had bran muffins on the dining car this morning before sending it on to "Points East". Congrats to Fifedog on the Ravens winning. Rather interesting having two brothers as head coaches for the competing teams. Should be a busy day at work, but nothing exciting so far. TBIL after "The New Normal" tonight. I hope everyone has a good day.
Keep on training,

Morning everyone.
Redfire, welcome back!
Really cold in our area. 'bout 14 degrees out right now. Clear though. However, we may see some snow showers later on today.
Well, it is very late. Stayed up after the wife went to bed to watch a train DVD my brother gave me for Christmas called Great American and European Railroads. Just watched the first of three DVD's. It was comprised of a number of old films showing railroading in the 30's, 40's and 50's. As you would imagine, a lot of steam and first generation diesel footage. Very nice!
Kev - like the work you've done on the planned expansion. Hope you will keep us updated on your progress.
Redfire - I'm pretty much a new guy on the Pot, but welcome back.
Joe - I was in Japan for a short time years ago, about 1967 I think. I number of good memories including a chance to ride on one of the Bullet Trains and getting lost in Tokyo. Left the hotel to look around and the next thing I knew I was lost. Took awhile to find my way back to the hotel. You know that saying about how people will walk in a circle if lost in the woods. Well, it seems that's what happened to me in Tokyo. Despite having gotten lost it was a great time. Beautiful country and as I recall I enjoyed the food.
I've got to hit the sack. Good night fellas, Bo
Hello all
Another quiet night collecting photons. Trying to teach an undergraduate student how radio astronomy works thru a chat window. Suggested we get him up here at some point.
I am in love w/ Kev' layout. I am currently limited to a 3' X 5' layout at the house and a 3' X 4' that I use for testing and running trains at work, respectively the Hedrick and Highline Divisions of the Mt. Graham & Arizona Eastern.
AF53 - Ray, sounds like you have a modern engine there that is running slow, so the CW80 should run it OK. I've had trouble w/ older engines and the electronic circuit breakers in the more modern transformers. Most modern locos use a DC motor where the A/C is converted to regulated D/C on the circuit board. I am currently working on a little docksider that I think had similar issues. And HudsonJohn, a diesel locomotive? Ray, please, don't do it....
Jon - a good train shop to check out in the Phoenix area is Roy's Train World in Mesa. It's on Country Club just north of the interchange w/ Route 60. One of the oldest in the state. There are a couple others in the Phoenix area, but I have not been to them. And the McCormack RR Park is great as you have seen. The Magma Arizona loco you saw on display was one of the last steam operating short lines in the country. I have been underground at the mine it used to haul to, of course at that time they were using diesel haulage. At the time the deepest operating mine in the country w/ the lowest working level @ 3800'.
How long will you be in the Phoenix area? There is an open house at the Gadsden Pacific Museum in Tucson this coming Sunday which was featured in CTT not long ago. I could also be coaxed into making a run w/ the hardtop up to Roy's after Wednesday.
Jim - good to have you back!
Well the black painted parts of the bike got their final coat of paint. Was tearing apart the sump in the control room sink in between coats this morning. Tomorrow morning I hope to get a couple more coats of yellow on the frame and front forks this morning, in between cleaning the lower shrouds and thermostats for the hardtop. Then Tues. night we will assemble the bike And next week get the heat (such as it is) working on the car

Hang in there Jeffrey, so sorry man.
Good one Chief! So - is Redfire = Probe? Welcome (back)!
Nice chat with SJ and Kevin tonight, although Kevin was only on for a little while. Temps are dropping severly here too. Nice addition to the layout, Kev. Just had a nice relaxing day today. Need to get back to work tomorrow, so need to get some good sleep. Watched the latest Batman movie on bluray with my son - it was really good. Also read some Trains magazine. Then we ate way too much pizza. TARDIS is ready and we have banilla and rootbeer on board, so let's go!
RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
Good night all. Back home from lake house and Mayors' Assoc. dinner. Temps are dropping and windy. Turning cold but not Yankee cold like up Nawth.
Jeffrey, so sorry about your Mom. Look after your Dad now.
Think alarm has gone off while Wifey was away as it had an 01 code displaying when I got home tonight. Sorry neighbors probably heard it and ignored it. Bunch of bums. Probably screamed until it times out???? Still think the trains are starting up and playing by themselves. Rechecked the whole place and nothing lying around to be blown by the heatpump inside fan. ????

Hope everyone is doing OK.
Time for popcorn.
Sleep tight.
Back home again. We left for Michigan last Thursday to visit mom. Her cardeolgist nixed the work on her knee, so we are trying to come up with a plan 'B'.
Went home by way of Kentucky to visit our youngest son. While we were there, we wandered around town looking at potential properties to retire to - I'm close enough that we really do need to put some plans together.
Nice day to travel, though it got cloudy around St Louis and the temperature got colder the further west we got.
Oh well, back to work tomorrow. Got to catch up on my SS payments.
All for now.
Thanks to all for the condolences, prayers and good thoughts. It's much appreciated.Well, it's time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.
sir james I Laptop say's 13 degrees, expecting 4 overnight. As expected it was a quiet day. Banilla will be ready for the crew. My thoughts on leaving to pot. How does running away solve the problem? The bad guys win....S.J.

Agreed. After talking with RT and others, I decided to come back and make a fresh start.

Evening All.
Jeffrey, Deepest condolences on the loss of your Mom. Prayers for her and all your family as she will always be in your heart.
Was at the museum today for a Kid's Club Fun Run, all went well with no catastophies and only two no-shows.
Fife,
To me, the best thing about the RAVENS win is that the local citizenry will be rather pleasant for the next two weeks. This is important, as winter is such a hard time for me.Now the only question to be answered is "how much of the city will burn depending on whether they win or loose".
Jon,
Talked to oldest son this morning in Cedar Falls, IA, wind chill was -34. Our temps = 75 today, 76 tomorrow, 77 Wed., boringly wonderful I never knew it could be like this in January!
Keep talking like that and we'll think you will soon be falling into the "Snowbird" category.
Joe, I made one trip to Japan about 15 years ago. The first night in Kobe at a sushi bar of the directors choice they brought out a huge platter shaped like a boat with anything and everything that swam or crawled in the ocean. Thank goodness the chilled sake was smooth as silk. The visit to Kinagawa Hot Springs was nice but sleeping on the tatamie(sp) mats was a tad uncomfortable.
Roy, Sounds as though you guys had to much fun.
Well time to scrounge up something for supper.
Later all.
Almost forgot, has anyone seen an "O" scale or close to scale Chik-Filet building ?
