RE: Batteries

I have never had a problem with AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts, Sears or WalMart.  All these places except Sears will test and replace the battery for FREE!!!!  Prices are VERY competitive on the WalMart batteries.  DonB, my recommendation is to call Firestone Customer Retention and B****h up a storm.  You may get some free vouchers for oil changes, et al.  I used to work for them, and trust me, a free oil change always better than nothing for just the aggravation.

Brutus,

            Happy B-Day

Really disgusted now.  I won't go into details here, although I don't think I'd need to anyway.  I've given up looking for full time work in my field.  Why bother?  Hope those Mayans were right.

RT, I have found warrenties are an absolute JOKE. especially those "extended warrenties". I have never bought into any of that crap, but my wife learned the hard way about them.  she had a laptop with an Extended warrenty.  well the key board crapped out, and guess what.......  not covered......  so gues what she dosent buy any more........  "extended Warrenties"

and BTW, those one year full replacement warrenties they try to sell you on tools at lowes and homedepot?  You so much as use that tool for one minute outside you personal residence, its considered "commercial use" and NOT COVERED!!

I never buy extended warranties they cost more than they worth and if you notice depending on the product there only like 1 to 3 years well thats because thats what the consider the life span of the product

JimmyT,

Pick yourself up.  Yeah Maybe your right and it is time to look in another direction. Yes

You will not be the first or last that has had to make a midlife career changes. The things you have learned will always be with you and many of them like drive and hard work will serve you well in anything you do. I worked with many young people that were doing jobs that had nothing to do with their schooling and they adapted well and will be fine. Heck the last one had a degree in metallurgy and was working in logistics. Smile, Wink & Grin

I was forced to go into something else many times because of layoffs, lockouts, strikes, and an injury and I know the frustration you feel but you can do it. It just may be the greater of the choices. Just go for something. You never know what is around the bend.

I hope those Mayans were wrong. Surprise

Best of luck.  Angel One must have hard times to enjoy the good times. Wink

Prayers also for Tyler and all the others in need and suffering.

My pal from Denton TX is coming back tonight and then will be leaving tomorrow morning and then I get to start on my pre-colonoscopy Prep for Friday.  OH JOY, Bang Head

Went down to my parents place this morning to keep an eye on my mother while my father was out running errands. When he came back we had pizza for lunch then I helped him set a couple of floor beams in what will be his new office. It's a screened in porch right now. He's having the screens taken out and the walls rebuilt with windows. The porch floor is too low. It has to come up 4.7 inches, so that's why the beams are being put in. They'll be topped with plywood then a laminate floor laid over that.

Does anyone have problems with this site erroring out and having to reopen.  IE9 on Windows 7.  I open three forums at once.  CTT errors out abut 75% of the time and has to reopen.  The other two, never. Sigh

Yeah Chief, If I try to log on from anyplace but the home page I get the error message but if it hit the back button it will go back to where I was and I will be logged in.

If you click the torn page button by the header it might just do the trick..it makes IE9 think it is IE8 then on this site.

I've got a few sites that have issues with IE9 here...

Then again..if it persists you might want to check Google Chrome...

Don't have IE9 but I had the same trouble and worse with IE8. Even running in compatibility mode it continued having problems. I switched to Firefox and can now have eleven tabs open at once (normal for me) with no problems.

Kev,

It just gets so frustrating.  I do realize that things could be much worse (and for many they are), and have been trying to take things one day at a time.  What's really bothering me the most is that 11/16 will be a year to the day that my position was terminated.

I am thinking that southwestern PA just isn't where I want to be any longer.  I've been considering driving over to Malvern, PA to a company that is looking for people.  The long drive is what is holding me back though.

Jim thats nice area but its been years since I've been there ( I grew up in west chester ( right next to Malvern) I know a lot has changed. But its a nice area. you would be about 2 1/2 hrs from Laz, and john and a few more especially the N.J. guys. Not sure what rent goes for where you are but its not cheap there heck its not cheap anywhere. thats the big thing is seeing what there ready to pay you and what you can get somewhere to rent for. Malvern the main street thru it king street is an old town area which PA. is know for on the east side anyway.

If you need to look up some info the local newspaper is the daily local news

Just some help I hope

Good evening all,

Posted yesterday and 3 pages gone before I post again.  Too much sometimes.  Long day at work dealing with work issues and the matter I cannot talk about yet.  More time tonight on that as well.  Second visit to chiropractor.  Not sure if this is worth it.  Way too much going on.....

Keep on training,

We got home about 9pm Sunday night.  We started in Barcelona about 7am, landed in Chicago about 10pm.  About 20 hours real time from start to finish.  Picked up our cats from our kids place and drove to Sedalia on Sunday.  Been playing catch up since then.

Cloudy & dreary here the last couple of days.

Stopped at the LHS today.  Picked up a Lionel Volume 2 catalog.  Some interesting things in there.  Got to think about the prices, though.

All for now.

They are made to make money for them not save money for you.

WR.....you are right.  Generally, warranty extensions are high gross profit items for the OEMs or the retailers.

For American cars, they sell for around $2,500 with the dealer cost around $1,400.  The dealers will discount them at the time of purchase about 20%.  So you pay roughly $2,000 for an additional three years coverage and up to 100,000 miles for essentially bumper-to-bumper coverage on everything except wear and tear items and routine maintenance (fluids, tires, belts, hoses, brakes, batteries, bulbs).

I drive cars about 10-12 years and over 100K miles before I get something newer to replace them.  82 Chevy Camaro, 87 Chrysler Turbo LeBaron, 90 Mercury Sable, 94 Dodge Intrepid, 98 Oldsmobile Aurora, 03 Infinity G35, and an 07 Cadillac SRX.  Had a warranty extension on all but the Infinity which has only suffered a failed power window motor and $150 out-of-pocket to date.

With the incredible complexity you see on today's cars and the added mandatory safety equipment (traction control, stability control, ABS, TPMS)  options (power everything), a dash filled with NAV, DVD, CD, XM satellite, driver info controls), and more electronics and warning sensors (everything touched by computers) than the space shuttle......you never seem to get out of the shop for under $500 on a single repair with too many gadgets and electronics to go bad......and they do.

On a more basic mechanical level, for example, automotive warranty extensions covered me on two transmissions (Sable and Intrepid) and one turbo (LeBaron), each covering my entire extended warranty outlay on a single repair.  Trust me, there were more extended warranty repairs on these three vehicles.

And yes, the warranty extension did cover that $750 (installed) sealed LED high mount brake light bar replacement on the SRX.  That single replacement defrayed one-third of my entire cost of the warranty extension.  Other extended warranty repairs on the SRX: power lumbar failure/replacement, power sunshade failure, failed rear hatch defroster, AM antenna  module replacemnt, and they had to take out the power sunroof to replace failed rear guides.  So I have easily already made money on the SRX warranty extension.

Leading consumer magazines maintain that warranty extensions (in general) are a poor investment. I believe them, based on my own personal experience.  I have not and do not take out these warranty extensions, except for the highest ticket "appliance" I own, automobiles.  For me, the peace of mind of not having to come up with, say, $3,000 for a transmision/transfer case or $1,100 for an air conditionng compressor out of pocket is worth it.

In my repair experience and extended warranty experience, driving cars over a decade, the warranty extensions have also made financial sense, especially in the situations when I have bought late model, low mileage certified pre-owned vehicles where you can never be sure how correctly the prior owner broke in the vehicle and/or how well he/she maintained the vehicle.

Other car owners' experiences may vary!  Me?  I smile all the way to the bank, car after American car.Thumbs UpSmile, Wink & Grin

Mornin' boys.  Mornin' English.  Mostly gloomy and 43 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Watching grandbaby this morning, before I go in to work.

Probe - Changes in latitude, changes in attitude... Perhaps a search of the Raleigh/Durham region may bring you success.

RockIsland - I'd leave the garage as is, and introduce sonny-boy to the business end of a broom when he returns.

Rock, I dont have any experiance with automotive warrenties, I did, in 06 buy a brand new truck with a 100,000 mile / 5 year factory warrenty, but with my job at the time, i put 100k on it in 1.5 years so the warrenty went out the window before any issues occured

Morning.  Sunny and chilly but going into the 60's.  Will make 70 nby weekend.  Off to a meeting in Raleigh.  Then home to get new friend [the one with health problems] and go to Ayden NC to see a Walmart Express.  Then to the farms [after a good load of eastern NC Bar-be-que] to hunt the afternoon.

Why not.  Everyone else does.  Yankee dersertion.  Took Wiley for his "operation" and chipping at the vet.  Had to pass a big screwup in traffic [parents taking kids to an elementary and middle school at a two lane bridge in Wake Forest].  Line of traffic.  Every third car was Yankee license plates.  Every third Yankee plate was Ohizo.  Come on down.  Well'll make you welcome.  You can help me with the screnery on the layout when you are off from work.  Wink
