ChiefEagles
Still saying northeasterner blowing up the northeast coast.  Prayers.

Chief has it dead on.

Guess the East coast cannot catch a break.  This Nor'easter is expected to hit me about 20 miles North of Boston on Wednesday and into Thursday with 2-3" of rain expected here and winds gusting to 50mph.  That will make one earthquake, one hurricane, and one powerful Nor'easter inside of 3 weeks.

I can't imagine how terrible it is for the millions still without power and, worse, for those flooded out.  The electric power workers, public works workers, and safety folks must be well past fried as John's post indicated (his 98 hours working over 5 days).  Tired?  How about running on empty in dangerous conditions?

My wife had to drive down to White Plains NY last Thursday and returned home Friday.  Too few gas stations had gas down that way, or if they did, they had no power to pump it.  That issue extended up Route 15 along the Merit Parkway in Connecticut.  Long lines and hours' wait at the stations that even had both gas and electric.  Rationing.  Many folks have to drive 50 miles just to get gas for their cars and generators (if they are fortunate enough to have one).

Prayers for those whose lives have been terribly impacted by Hurricane Sandy and continue to suffer, with the temperatures dipping well into the 30s. Angel  With more one the way, we can't pray enough.

As my Dad (RIP) used to say, "There but for the grace of God go I." Sad

Good morning all,

Prayers continue for the Northeast.

Weather here has been nice lately with warm days and cool nights.

Took a pass on Cal Stewart train meet this year.  My heart was just not in it this time.  Maybe someone will post something about it if they went.

Dinner out last night with friends and church this morning at 11:30AM.

Turned back clocks last night to standard time.

Have a good weekend,

Ray

Kev --

I have the same issue with the Lionel playground--teeter totters, swings, etc.  I can hear the motor running when I click it on but nothing happens, the frustrating point is that it's completely landscaped so it looks like it belongs there seamlessly.  I hate to pull it out but I'm going to have to, it's one of the grand kids favorites.  It's not like it was on constantly, frustrating.

We just finished a massive cleaning of the layout, including every inch of the track -- long overdue.  We had enough track cleaner, MTH liquid from years ago but now it is gone and I'm curious as to what everyone else uses?  It's all MTH Realtrax, not tubular -- your thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

Don B., any ideas on a double track lift bridge?  Giving some serious thoughts to adding on to the layout but I would need at least a single track lift but would prefer a double if possible.  Thanks.

John I use Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty scour pads, 6" X 3.8" X 1/4", 3 toa pack. These are the green untreated ones. I have used them for years. Just "sand" the track with the pads dry.

Yes Jon very disappointing when something won't work that is new, I had mine landscaped into the table too, but it ain't now. And what is worse they don't even service it but give you the part number. Bang Head

I use the same thing as Pat  I think, It is a sponge with a scour side and a sponge side. I wipe it with the scour side first then spray elect. contact cleaner on the sponge side and wipe it off. BUT you got to be careful (don't use tooo much ) that elect contact cleaner WILL BURN but it pulls the oils off very good.

It's 39 and still cloudy.

Home from the show, I bought 3 lionel unlit set caboose's for $5 and a Plasticville house under construction without the the small landscape pieces for $5. That was my spending spree. Also got to spend some time with Charlie, that is always a plus. I will wait awhile and have some banilla. Tardis later...S.J.

Today has been a little longer than usual. I've already set my clocks back an hour for DST. Today I took care of a plumbing problem that had been nearly driving me nuts. The drain line from the kitchen sink went to a drainage stack embedded in the wall between the kitchen and bathroom. No matter what I did I couldn't stop the kitchen connection to the stack leaking. Well today I disconnected that line and plugged it off at the stack. I reran the kitchen drain pipe, drilled an inch and a quarter hole in the floor under the cabinet and ran the pipe down through the hole and routed a pipe outside to a patch of grass beside the trailer. It's just clear sink water and there's nothing harmful in it. The only soap I use is completely biodegradable. When I get some more pipe I'll route it out to the magnolia tree in my yard. I did the same thing with an RV I lived in before I bought this trailer. The water from the kitchen and shower supplied water for the garden I had then. The water from my kitchen is much cleaner than that flowing into the ditches from the drain lines of my neighbors washing machines and dish washers. I'm sure the magnolia tree will love having a supply of water. It's dry up here on the hill.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Evening all.  Back from MIL/FIL's.  Took fried chicken livers and gizzards from the local bar-be-que fried chicken restaurant. Dinner

Wifey is now happy and locked in to the Halmark Channel and all their Christmas movies.

Jon, I have the Realtrax.  I use denatured alcohol on a basicly lint free wrag.  I do not use terry cloth rags.  Snags in switches and etc.  Works great.  Denatured alcohol does not attack rubber.  Rubbing alcohol will.

Double track bridge.

This is the double one I have to enter the Box and the layout.  Don has some great hinges.  The pin of the hinge has to be taller than the top of your rail.  Why I used the blocks so I have NO gap at all between the track on the bridge and the track on the benchwork.  Breaks away just fine.  You can actually buy metal bridges up to 42" long.  Cost $$$$$

Never rained as forecasted.

Now for TV and diet gingerale.

Some places will fine you for spitting in your back yard. There's a town near here where they'll fine you if they can see even a hint of a trash can from the street. There's a very stupid law that says you can water your lawn with a sprinkler but the sprinkler or hose can't be visible. Underground systems aren't allowed. Is that idiotic or what?! Glad I don't live in town!

Break time and dinner:

Prayer Request: We had a Lineman (One of ours) make contact yesterday. Very serious. CPR was done at the scene and he is at St Barnabus Medical Center. No more on his condition but this St Banabus is the leading Burn Unit.

Sorry if I took off on the Non Union Linemen. It was a long tough day. But it feels good when people come up to you when you stop at a dinner for a meal and they come over and thank you.

We have crews from all over the Country and Canada pitching in. I have met a number of great people and we have help them with many a vehicle problem. A lot of people are amazed how fast we recovered from the flood and got the garage back together to where we can function. Most of my guys are doing look ups and storeroom work as well as making repairs in the field.

As of now, I have no electricity at home. I live in the service territory of the electric company that started the non union flap. Sad part is that my daughter told me where a big tree came down and took the wire. It is the main feeder to where AF53 and I live. The tree crew was there and removed the tree. The electric company has not been back. Sad

We have a Nor'Eastern coming for Wednesday. The temps have dropped into the 30's and there is a chance for SNOW.Angry

Prayers for Tyler and everyone else in need.

John

 Jeffery,

I think those kinds of laws come from a result of population density . Kind of like in the streets of old London and having all of the human waste running down the streets, so goes the plague. If you know what I mean. It just depends on where you are at and how much effect it has on others. As for me I like to go P* P* off the porch. Laugh

Never apologize for saying how you feel about something , no matter who bucks you. JMHO Just ask SJ and RT. Wink

Ran trains tonight to clear my head, more troubles with my son and his wife. Bang Head Chief knows.  ( seems like it happens every 6 months or so! #@%*+%#@ ) Guess there will be no Holidays again this year thanks to her. Sucks to be him. Sad

I had dinner at my parents place today. Pork chops, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, onions. It was a good meal. I was lucky to get down there and back too. I've been having a lot of trouble getting around today. Very unsteady. Guess I've been pushing too hard, then these recent emergencies didn't do me any good either.  In my trailer it's not much of a problem because I have the walls and other things for support. But outside or in a large open room it can become a very real problem. The basic problem is my sense of balance is shot. Has been since I was two years old. If I lose the horizon I can become disoriented. A pitch black room is a place I don't want to be! Sometimes it gets really aggravated. That's exactly what's been happening today. I fell three times while I was there, twice to my knees and once fell over backward flat on my back. Fortunately it doesn't bother me when I'm sitting down, only when I'm standing. If it follows it's usual pattern I might as well stay in bed tomorrow for all the good I'll be to anyone.

Speaking of bed that's where I'm headed now. See y'all whenever.

Howdy guys!  Glad to hear you are okay, John.  Prayers out for your co-worker as well as BOC, Tyler and all of us.  Char is doing a bit better, but think she needs another round of antibiotics to clear her up.  I cleared out about 2 huge bags of trash from the shower build and bathroom.  I shimmed out and put in the drywall trim around the shower and tested the whole thing.  I had to tighten up one of the connections, but I think it might be right now?  I'll check it again tomorrow - might need to take that apart and put on some teflon tape - no big deal.  Once that all checks out - I'll seal it up etc.  Almost done Thumbs Up

TARDIS is ready - let's hit it guys!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Evening All !!

Learned something today, Have you guys hear of "Paper Train Wheels", and I am referring to proto type, Scale 1, trains!  Never heard of them.  Saw these wheels sitting at the round hourse and couldn't figure out what they went to.  They where 36" wheels.  They HAD belonged to the Business/Presidential car we have from the Rio Grande Southern, (Edna).  The wheels are illegal today, but they were actually stuffed with paper, to provide a smoother and quieter ride.

Ray, I didn't make it too either show this weekend.  Cal-Stewart at Ontario, or the G-Scale show at Pomona.  Worked both days.  Did get some "Throttle Time" today, so I am well on my way toward and Engineer certification.

jonadel

Don B, Any ideas on a double track lift bridge?  Giving some serious thoughts to adding on to the layout but I would need at least a single track lift but would prefer a double if possible.  Thanks.

Jon,  This is what I did, and I have been extremely satisfied with it.  I used the MTH double track bridge.  I did stiffin it by getting a piece of .032 gauge sheet metal, and replaced the plastic base.

As the Chief has said the trick is to make sure the pivot point of the hinge is above the surface of the layout.

These are the hinges I used.

I think I have about $6 in the bridge other than the MTH bridge it self.  I will post the source etc. In the AM.  I think I have a pair I can send to you, let me check.

Today is a busy day. I have a few chores to do and phone calls to make. Then, a project to do for the wife. A late lunch and a short nap for sure.

Surprise.....Breakfast is warm apricot Danish and a bowl of Mandarin orange slices.

Y'all have a great Monday.

Good morning. It's 58° with 100% humidity and dense fog. There's a slight chance of rain this morning and a fair chance this afternoon. The high is expected to be 75°.

Today I'm having as much trouble as I expected to have. My balance is really messed up and my left knee is numb. I can get around inside my trailer well enough but it's slow going. Forget about going outside. I wouldn't even be able to get down the steps. Whatever my father needs help with today he's going to have to find somebody else to do it or handle it himself. If I feel up to it later I may be able to do a little cleanup work on the layout. For now it's back to the bed.

Good Mornin' Y'all From Cold And Overcast Taxachusetts,

To begin......my prayers continue for Tyler, BOC, Char, Jeffrey, for HudsonJohn, and for so many more of us in need.  This stuff makes that stuff (like the election) look small by comparison.  And yes.  Family and job matters weigh heavily on many minds here.  You guys are probably tired of hearing my pontificating.  But I speak from the heart, and sometimes it goes over like a lead balloon.

The fact of the matter is that as I age, more often than not I wake up mornings and find myself giving thanks for the things yesterday that I DID NOT SAY, or giving thanks for the more sincere and tactful way I said it.

At the end of the day, did I drive others away with my opinions and words or did I plant a seed that someday might bridge a chasm with a family member or friend that would bear more fruit, a common understanding, or a level of respect I could not otherwise achieve?

We survive by and with the results, not the good intentions or the correctness of our positions and decisions of the moment.

Would I rather be right, or would I rather win.  They are not the same things.  If I kept taking the  "be right" strategy of my younger days, my relationships with my family and friends might have left me me with far fewer family and friends who are still talking to me.  This approach is not a weakness but is a strength.

Jack.

Mornin' boys.  Grey and 39 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Just feels downright cold.  Got most of fifedom cleaned up over the weekend, and the little one's birthday party was nice.  Have to yank a couple window AC units today, and perhaps jigsaw out some subroadbed for the layout, before work.  Also, youngest princess and I are starting to gather ideas for Wifey's North Pole Village display.

Morning all.  Chilly but still no frost here.  Just a few miles north toward the MIL?FIL's everything burnt with frost.  Strange how a few miles change things.  Will pick all my tomatoes and peppers today.  Got one shrub to dig up and put in greenhouse.  Then all through.  Leaves on the pecan trees still green and not falling.  Makes it hard to see those pesty squirrels.  Still poping one every day or so with the .22 pellet gun.

Jon, will try and call and chat on bridges.  More photos emailed.  Always good to expand if you have room.

Prayers for the northeast coast.  Another storm headed that way.  Not good.

Meetings this afternoon and tonight or I'd be hunting.  Maybe tomorrow if no rain.

Have a good one.

Aloha. Grey and cold today. Nice TARDIS ride with Brutus, Charlie and SJ last night. Nice Bears win. Took youngest out kite flying at half-time. We let out all 1,500 ft of line - then realized the kite drifted into the landing pattern for our local airport. Jack, those are great reminders. Prayers for John, AF53, BoC, Tyler, Jeffery andJohn's lineman. I use a Scotchbrite brand scrub pads that I mount underneath a weighted flat car and drag around the layout. Works wonderfully.

Speaking of the layout, I started to take it up last night - to rebuild it over the next few months following an Ivor the Engine theme.

I have been struggling about what to do for the oldest grand daughters bithhday on the 8th knowing the issues I am having with her mother and my son that will mean we won't see her. She will be six.  Sad  So today I made a Donation to the Red Cross Sandy relief fund in Madyson's name. They will be sending her a card of thanks for the donation. I hope that her parents will explain to her that she has helped someone in greater need than herself.  Hmm

Oh what to do?  Bang Head

Later Guys.

Don  -- we have similar tastes in bridgesThumbs Up  I had seen an article in CTT about this project and decided to add it to the layout after I had laid down track, fortunately I did it before had done much scenery work.

This is where I would like to expand across the room in front of the gas fireplace, I need to be able to get to that fireplace as that's the basement and it get's a bit chilly in the winter!

This is a view of the long room, the computer table and bar would have to go.

This is view from the fireplace looking west, again--furniture has to go but there would be a nice wide aisle to see both sides.  The only problem would be that I would like to make the tables 40" deep and that's a long reach.

So tempting and I think the boss is in favor of it!
