Do's a tablet (i pad) do everything that a lap top do's? I would kind of like to buy one, mostly to learn technolegy but I can't emagine what I would do with it. I don't care at all about games, TV or movies on a computer. I read the train forums morning and evening and don't want to during the day. Why are tablets the latest rage over laptops?

Depends on what you mean by 'everything a laptop does'. Tablets are smaller and lighter than most laptops so they are considered more 'portable'. You can get them with or without a cell plan - if you don't get a cell plan then you will only be able to connect via Wi-Fi, a cell plan allows you to connect anywhere you have coverage.

I don't like that tablets are considered 'mobile' devices. When I connect to this site on my Toshiba Thrive I am taken to the mobile version - which I do not care for at all. You can't switch to 'the full site' but I would rather just go to the 'full site'... but it is one of personal preference.

Typing on a tablet can be difficult as they don't have real keyboards - they are the virtual keyboard, similiar to what is on a smart phone - although you can get a keyboard case for most tablets now, or you can get a USB Keyboard - don't try that with an iPad as you also need a $50 USB adapter as well because Apple doesn't think USB is standard...

If you don't get an iPad you can install Flash on them, Acrobat (for reading pdfs), and even buy software that will allow you to read Word, Excel, and other MSOffice documents. I have not tried programming on a tablet - I do Windows programming so I would bet that on the Android OS or Apple OS that would not be an option - maybe on the new MS Surface tablet...

Good morning!

Today my wife and I were married 30 years ago. That time just flew past me. No regrets. Also my fellow Supervisors and Managers from the other garages across the State are taking me out for a retirement lunch. My wife and family were invited. My wife and son are coming but my daughter has to work. Maybe I can convince my wife that this is our anniversary dinner.

AF53: I am glad that it is working out ok for Cathy.

RT: I know what you mean about "Deals".

SJ: I hope Granny feels better.

Ryan: Benchwork loking good!

Chief: P.C. has a long list of accomplishments. God bless him.

Fife: Looks like you are setting yourself up just right for retirement. Good Luck with the property and house.

Laz: Today, Tomorrow and a wake up left to go!!!

Have a Great Day!

John, Anniversary and retirement? Congrats you made it.

Temp is 32 and it's sunny. Only thing on today's menu is lunch with another couple. Granny's a little better but still has a way to go. I don't know what this bug is but it seems to be everywhere.

Happy hump Day....S.J.

John: Happy anniversary and retirement. You're going to be wondering how that honey-do list can get SO long!

*

*

Good morning. It's 41° with 95% humidity. It'll be mostly sunny with a high of 62°.

It;s on the cool side here with a northeast wind coming off the lake. I may work on the layout a bit today. There are no projects I want to work on right now. The grain elevator still isn't complete but I just don't feel like tackling that right now. There are other smaller things I can work on but I just don't want to get wrapped up in any one thing at this time.

Oops!! State Farm ain't never gonna believe this!

Good Mornin' Y'all from Cold and Gloomy Taxachusetts,

Somehow we missed the forecasted snow yesterday and last night, was just supposed to be an inch anyway.  The chimmney guy is supposed to show up shortly and put a cap on my chimney and do some tuckpointing R&R on the top rown of chimney brick.

Over the past weekend out at the Eastern States Expo Center in West Springfield Taxachusetts, the wifey and Maximus achieved two qualifying scores in off-leash competitive obedience with a second place finish in one of his two trials.  One more qualifying score and Maximus will have his "Advanced" off-leash obedience title  Over 2,100 dogs and their owners showed up for the Thursday through Sunday events in conformation, agility, and obedience.  It was a veritable zoo out there with competitions going on in three separate buildings, each larger than a football field.

There was one "incident."  My wife was called into the obedience competition ring for one of her runs.  A brain dead woman with a rather large German Shepherd was blocking the entrance to the ring so that those competing could neither exit or enter the ring.  She was told to move by a ring steward, so she took just two steps to her right and parked herself and her dog, still in the way.

As Maximus and my wife were entering the ring, the woman's dog lit up and took a cheap shot at Maximus from behind.  Our dog whipped around to face his attacker but did absolutely nothing except face the dog down with a calm "bring it" stare.  There was not even a growl out of him, and the German Shepherd thought the better of it and backed away.  We were so proud of our dog for being confident enough to hold his ground, correctly assess the threat, while briefly glancing at my wife for further instructions.  "Should I eat that dog?" Wink.

At that point the stewards basically told the woman in no uncertain terms to get away from the entrance with her dog or be banned from the building that day and for the future.  Then they asked my wife if she or our dog were hurt or distraught.

They were ready to let wifey skip her trial slot, recompose Maximus and herself, and then take the floor later for their trial run.  Accidental or on purpose, incidents like this (yes, people try to gain an unfair competitive advantage in these competitions) can unnerve a dog and the handler.  In fairness, it was the right offer for the stewards to make.  Wifey says "Nope.  My dog and I are OK.  Let the show go on."  And she then proceeded to complete her routine with Maximus and finish second. Thumbs Up

This is what you are likely to get when you are selective about proper breeding against the breed standard, a solid historical temperament in the ancestry line, and are dedicated to training a dog.  You get a solid pup who has the confidence in himself to hold his ground yet will trust in his owner to make the right decisions for him.

The well-bred Doberman will differentiate between a passive stranger (or dog), a friendly stranger, or an outright threat.  Maximus showed that ability to differentiate once again, just as he had done at the Doberman Pinscher Club of America working aptitude evaluation (temperament) trials where 60% of the dogs tested that day flunked!!!  And the flunk rate that day matched the national average for this test.

Breed banning in the U.S. might make the average citizen feel safer, but it will do absolutely nothing to correct the true source of dangerous or lethal dogs in our society.....wacko dogs of poor breeding that are owned by gang bangers and irresponsible or overmatched owners, and with little or no training in the mix.  The responsible folks will be penalized while the bad people move on to the next breed du jour.  In the 1970s the breed was the Doberman, the German Shepherds in the 1980s, the Rottweillers in the 1990s, and the so-called pit bulls since 2000. SoapBox

Sorry to brag on about my wife and my dog.  Pam has put a lot of time and effort into this dog and this competitive obedience stuff.  Over the decades as a working mother who never had time for a hobby, who raised our children, who made our house a home, and who never had time for herself, it is uplifting to see her able to have "a life" and succeed at a hobby she truly enjoys.  Me?  I am the humble "go fer" who drags all the the crates and training paraphanalia, cleans up dog poop, and performs other similar servile activities.  She has me trained too. Whistling

Later, gang.

Wow, a lot of good news, sad news all around us on the pot these days. Same old, same old, as the saying goes.

HudsonJohn - Happy Anniversary. I think I was at your wedding, in fact I gave the bride away. I had opinions about you then and they came out correct! Whistling

Fife - Seems like a bit of planning and luck sometimes pay off, nice!

Kev - Maybe you should Lysol the next time you join the Tardis!

SJ - Get Granny better and stop getting others sick!

RI Jack - Amazing control. You sure must be a proud owner. Congtrats to you and your wife.

Wife came home today. Four small incisions are really bugging her though but otherwise she's ok.

Good morning all,

Had a little trouble getting on line today but son bailed me out again.  Problem was a dirty USB connection which he switched to a different one.

V8, you have more ambition about keeping up with technology than me.  I'm usually the last guy on the block to update anything.

Chief, prayers for your departed friend.  Sounds like a good send off for him.  I'm sure his family was glad you came.

Forcast is for some rain today and Saturday.  Probably won't be much but we'll take whatever we can get.

AF53,  glad to hear that all's well with your wife's surgery.

TTOS Southwestern Div. Christmas meet this coming Sunday.  No big deal, just cup cakes and coffee or hot chocolate but I will probably go to see everybody that I missed by not going to Cal Stewart.

Neighbors are in no hurry to get lights up this year.  Only one guy so far.  I'll haul mine out later.

See ya later,

Ray

Good for Maximus, Jack. I saw his accomplishment on FB.
Happy anniversary John!
Brent, nice summary on tablets.
Ray, if you want to get into technology, you might be better off with an inexpensive laptop. I have a range of iPads and they are essentially 'consumption' devices - games, movies, other media...

Ray, for what it's worth .... I have a very nice MacBook  Pro laptop that will do just about anything I want, probably over kill at this point in my life but I love it.  I also have an iPad, first generation that I spend the majority of my time on and it travels like a champ, perfect size.  I have yet to find a motel or coffee shop that does not have free internet, plus it's just easy to use.  I don't like typing on it so I should probably get a Blue Tooth keyboard, problem solved.  Even when we were in Alaska I found free Wifi spots, just need to ask.

If you are just wanting to check emails, CTT forum and all your favorite web sites an iPad would be perfect.  It's also a great place to store you music albums and photo's.

John,

           Happy anniversary.

Brent,

I've been looking at the Surface actually.  I don't like Microsoft's new GUI though.Ick! Personally, I'll never own or use iAnything, so that isn't an option.

Swamped with projects over here. Had to go to Lowes yesterday evening to get the longest 5/64" hex key that they sell to fix the loose set screw on the 751. Spent the rest of the night packing my former 2023s, fixed a broken wire in the 314AW's tender, then tore the 322AC down and went through it. Called it a day at 1AM.

Uploading videos and will be back later.

Yeah Pat,  I don't think Lehigh saw or read through it all of Jack's post on the doggie and misunderstood the comment. I can't understand why or how someone could miss reading all of one of Jack's post. Whistling

Thanks for the heads up SJ, seems I got it. Sad Now long will this last?

JimmyT, That is a cool log loader.

Wife and I went to Menard's today and they have a sale on all of their Woodland Scenics Menards buildings till Monday. $20.00+ off.  I had the motorcycle shop in my cart but I will not have a place for it till I do the addition so I put it back. hard to at $79.99. I see in the new CTT Woodland Scenics wants $149.99 for their Duce's Cycle shop and it looks like the same thing, I just don't know if they both have lights. They were all out of the Menards Lionel train sets and had no rolling stock.

Jack needs to get one, it has a junkyard Doberman protecting the side lot. Smile, Wink & Grin I think Jack's wife trained him because I told the dog to stay and he did.  Whistling it is a cool building.

Think I will lay down,

Have a good night guys. Sleep

Here's the 302 I got from Bob M. (submmbob) Here it is as it arrived:

Here is what was done to get it back in shape:

  • Replaced the rivet and fiber bushing that attach the front truck to the tender frame.
  • Repaired damaged harness between engine and tender.
  • Pilot casting was bent, so the original truck was swapped over to a good casting from the few remains of my dad's 302. I was able to reuse the original rivet.
  • Engine and tender were torn down completely and cleaned/relubed as needed.

Here it is now.  It needs a light bulb, new link coupler, and a smoke unit rebuild since it won't smoke continuously, but those are minor and easy fixes

watch?v=jVQD4RD3pTQ&feature=youtu.be

All things considered, it's a great 302 that is priceless to me. Thanks Bob.Big Smile

It's 37 now.

Kevin the pain and chills will last at least a full day, the crud in your throat, about a week. We did go out and eat with our friends but granny did not get close to anyone. She laid on the couch and went to bed at 8 o clock. She even missed her kids class at church and that is very rare. Banilla is ready and I shall wait for the thingy.

Got my day torpedoed before it even started! Got out everything I needed to start work on a project when my father calls. Needs me to look after my mother for a little while so he can go get a few things done. Sure, no problem. That was about 11:30 am. Here it is almost 9:00 pm at their place! I just her to bed a little while ago. Now I have to get the kitchen straight and finish some laundry. What happened to my father? He didn't there was a twelve hour work shift involved! He gets off at 11:15 tonight. I've already told him he owes me $80. If I'm going to work as a nurse I'm darn well gonna get paid for it!! My time is worth something! This also means I'll be out of commission tomorrow. I'm already hurting bad and tomorrow I'll be worse.

Time to call it a day. I may be on again tomorrow.
