Ken understand what your going thru completely having been thru 3 hurricanes and 2 tropical storms 1 of which I thought was worst than the last hurricane I was thru which was a cat 3. The tropical storm put me without power/water ect for 10 days the kicker the farm across the street never lost power but they where out of town.

It really gets you at your wits end I pray for you and all up there. I have a cousin at the ( I think if I have my directions correct) south end of the island in Valley Stream she faired well but has friends not far from her who lost everything house car and all. But there okay which I said to her is the most important thing as things in time will get better it may take years but it will.

Ken not sure this will help but goto my site here click on the one that says trains and then goto full screen ( warning some are of bad train wrecks and trains caught in flooding) the website is at the bottom of this post at least you will be able to see some neat trains a fair amount are NYC and PRR

Ken,

I have to agree with RT, You got to just hang in there. I have never been in a hurricane or a tropical storm but our house was pretty much wiped off of the planet by a level 5 tornado in 1990 and we were left with nothing but our lives and that was all we needed. We had neighbors not 800' away that were just fine and all they did was complain about the debris in their yards. Dots - Sign  It took us 11 months to rebuild and years for everything to return to some sort of normal for the 3 towns it hit.

The community churches, our neighbors and the red cross were a great help in our time of need.

At least you still have your family and trains. Yes And yes it helps to VENT.

Best of luck and prayers for you and all the others suffering from Sandy's path. Angel

Ken, thanks for the report on Long Island.  Prayers are sent for you and your neighbors.  Glad you fared better than some.

Chief, those cotton pickers will do it everytime!

V8 Dennis, thanks for the tip about the train show at the church in Glendora.  That is only a few blocks from where I live.  I saw it once before a long time ago.  I think they do it every year around Thanksgiving time.  They had a lot of trains running and several gauges I believe.  Can't remember if they used any TMCC or DCS though.

Jeffrey, current gas price for regular here is 3.95 per gallon.  They have to use a special type of gas here because of the smog regulations but right now they are using a winter grade which I think is available everywhere so why are we still paying higher prices than the rest of the country?  Duh!

Set up for Cal Stewart is taking place today in Ontario California at the Covention Center.  Show opens tomorrow at 9:00AM.

later,

Ray

Good luck Ken and others.  We've been there over and over.  I grew up in eastern NC.  When I was young, seems we had at least two hurricanes a season.  No power for days and days.  Buildings damaged and trees to cut up.  Last ones in NC flooded areas for days. Fran destoryed almost all the power infrastructure.  Floyd flooded down east for weeks.  Law Enforcement was ordered to not let people into their houses for weeks.  Both of those, I was ordered to work as I was manager over issuing state vehicles.  I sat in an office in Raleigh the State Capitol with no power for days.  Then we have ice storms.  Last big one, trees looked like tornatos hit.  Some folks had no power for over a month [and it was freezing winter].  No power, no gas.  If we have any indication of a storm, the norm is to fill lots of gas containers to run your generators.  A lot of the folks now have all house generators and especially those on natural gas.  I really feel for you.  Sorry it was you but thank God it was not us again.

Greetings from New Jersey......

We got power back on about 6:45 last night.  Tuesday was non stop wires/trees down.  Spent  Wednesday (12 hours of it) at work, + 1 hour to work, 45 minutes back, then 3 fire calls 2 of them major in scope.  Yesterday another 11 hours of work, then prepped for going to Ocean County.  We're part of a Rescue Task Force, will be rotated 4 days out, 24 in.  I'm scheduled for next week.

Town survived for the most part, no flood, major wind damage however.  My brother firefighters in Breezy Point, NY and Long Beach Island, NJ have had it much worse than us.  Moonachie, NJ and Hackensack have ben flooded out as a levy on the Passaic River broke.  And the shore is just unspeakable.

So, yeah, there are others in this state worse off than I.  We are ok.

Angel for those in need.....Will check back now that I have computer access and power....

Afternoon All:

Allow me to vent. We are still dealing with the effects of Sandy here on the east end of Long Island, and although we escaped the major damage that the Jersey Shore endured, many of us have no power.

No power also means no water as many of us use well water.

The kicker here is that our street is a priority street, and they did restore power to the street ends, the middle of the street has been "spliced" out, and here we sit 5 days later. The worst part is that our next door neighbor was ordered to trim a tree in front of their property, they never did and that is the very tree that is resting on the power lines.  They have a generator and are sitting fine, and no they have not offered refuge to their neighbors.

Maybe we will have power back at some point this weekend, and if so, I'll take some time to relax with the trains, before and after one heck of a clean up.

I'm done venting.

Ken

Why didn't the power Co. trim the tree?

Pat were talking about N.Y. Laugh I know everwhere I have lived they will trim the trees if the limbs are touching the wires and then in most cases depending on who actually doing they only have to trim enough for the limbs are not touching the wires with a given growth rate in most cases 1 year I think. in other words they only have to trim back for 1 year growth but most if you ask will do more I have had them all but drop the tree on my request.

Prayers for all in the north east as you all need them wheather you have or don't have electric and other things as it can change by them fixing one area it sometimes can cause another to go down ie triming trees on lines the relief some times will bend back enough to break the line seen that done that. I'm keeping in touch with my relatives up that way so far they did okay with all of this. Brother did fine and my cousins seem doing fine.

I'm with Pat on this one.  In our "neck of the woods" the power company comes through every 3 years and cuts out anything that might interfere with electric lines, they do a great job and sometimes p$ss off some folks who don't want their trees trimmed.  My feeling is: go power company, it's no fun sitting in a cold home because of a stupid limb that should have been trimmed.   We live in the country and I'm more than happy to see those trucks whacking away at limbs that the average citizen won't take care of.  Just my .02.

Jon and Pat are right.  Same here too.  At least every 3 years.  When the big storm hits, anything on the power line is cut by the power company or contractor.  But when the big storms hit, anything on the customer side of the pole, is cut aloose until the customer fixes it.

Big thing.  We all need to pray hard that the possible north easterner does not develop.  Our weather people and national news are saying possible north easterner coming by NC and then going north to hit these already devastated people.

CBS had a thing on the young people after the storm.  Well, we found that after Fran and Floyd, the little kids would come apart at any big wind blowing.  They would just start crying.  Adults will also suffer from this trauma.

Hello all

Thoughts and prayers for those in the path of the storm.

Not much work on the van yet, but did finish up the exhaust on the hard top.

Sounds much better w/ the tailpipe installed. Got as far as the muffler on Halloween. Smaller size too and can now get to the valve cover

The right 'log' (exhaust manifold) w/ it's new graphite packings. Diddled w/ the carbs a bit and she runs great!

Napped for a bit after an early meeting. About to head off to another. Will have to make some headway on the van tomorrow.

It's 40 degrees and still no sun today.

Here the trees are trimmed back but there is still plenty of tree to take out power lines. And they do. We got the module layout ready for tomorrow so it will be a busy day Saturday and Sunday. Banilla is ready for a thingy ride..S.J.

Jon, I am with you guys on this. The elect co. has a right away where their lines are here and they will destroy anything they think will mess stuff  up  every two or three years. No matter how mad it may make my wife Sandy.  Surprise We have a Gator tunnell where the lines are overhead and boy was she mad the last time they drove through and cut it all down. It just grows back. Whistling

Well I had to watch over my mother from about noon til 8pm today. It involved quite a lot of walking around getting this and doing that. My ankle is definitely letting me know about it! And now my father tells me he needs me to do it again in the morning! I told him that depends on how I feel in the morning. If I'm not feeling up to it I'm not doing it. He wasn't real happy with that but it's my body, not his.

Well it's time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow, maybe.

Krapug I hope you make it through the storm. TheQ and I need to get a generator, but we keep putting it off - we are tredding on borrowed time. My problem is I can't decide if I want to buy one that can power 1/2 the house, or to buy one that can power the whole house. We hope to be building a new home in the near future (kind of why I haven't dropped the $$$ on one yet).

I don't want to start a war here, but what I don't understand are the videos of people dumpster diving. Seriously? You knew this storm was coming over a week ago, you were told it was going to be a once in 200 year event, and yet you did not prepare? Seriously?

Those poor people.  A lot of people on foodstamps can't buy groceries, because the stores can't scan their food cards - that's one reason.  I hope the government there will tell stores to honor the cards for food items and get $$$ later.  I also hope the power is back and that John is taking care of himself!  Thanks for the link, Doug!  I picked up a trackmaster Toby today as a lark - fun to watch it run on my desk.  I also ordered a Williams Santa Fe Red/Silver F3 AA set for my birthday - it should be here by next Thursday Smile  Prayers for the potters and also for those dealing with the storm damage.

TARDIS is ready and we have greek yogurt or banilla - pick your poison!  Or Blue Moons, chips and salsa Smile

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Good Evening...

Well, our weather up here was definitely not boring..if you wanted variation we had it..every ten minutes ago it would change. Literally. We had some sun, some cloud, nasty winds, not so nasty breezes, no wind at all, cold, warm, rain, snow, sleet...even hail. Oh..and a thunderin'boomer showed up as well to add a bit of spice to the mix...ConfusedWhistlingLaugh

Mine runs everything except A/C and electric range [can not get Wifey to get a gas range even though we have one at the lake and she likes it].  Runs microwave, heat [natural gas] and everything else.  Water is town and heated by natural gas.

Not use to such things.  They know to go to the gro and etc before a big snow storm.  They are not use to huricanes.  Now Jack is use to big north easterners.  So he knows what to do.

Some people think they're special or it won't happen to them or why bother, they can just look around or someone will give them what they need or emergency services will be right on their doorstep. Whatever the reason it all boils down to not taking the time to be prepared.

Good Morning from Blueberryhill RR....

It is a cold and cloudy 40 degrees. Going up to 47 today with some sunshine.

Today is an easy day. I have an errand to run and a few chores to do. Then, I can relax and read the latest copy of CTT mag which just arrived. Not much else new.

Buckeye has some news.

Dining car is here with Cheerios for breakfast.

Y'all have a great Saturday.

Good morning. It's 63° with 100% humidity and dense fog. It'll be mostly cloudy with a chance of rain. The high will be 82°.

Sore and stiff this morning. Fog is heavy enough that we're under a dense fog advisory until 9am. My father wants me to watch over my mother this morning and I have to tell you I'm not looking forward to it. He says there's not much moving or walking around associated with it. Horse feathers!! I didn't get much sleep last night plus I had a sugar crash on top of that. When it rains it pours! I also have to get the second half of my grocery shopping done. That might have to wait a day or two. I don't expect to get any layout work done today. In fact the way things are going so far I don't expect to get ANY layout related work done this weekend period.

I can but hope that old Mr Murphy is through with me for a while. They say the bad things happen in three's. Van battery went bad after only two months, water heater busted, electric service pole busted and fell down. That seems like three.

A sunny 33 this morning.

I will be off to the train show soon. We will be running trains on 3 large loops from noon to 5. It's the same modules Charlie used in his driveway back in June but with the scenery added. I have nothing on my shopping list but I'm not one to pass on a good deal either.

Brutus you got yourself a very nice birthday present. enjoy...S.J.

EDIT: Don't forget to get up at 2 am and set your clocks back 1 hour.

Mornin' boys.  Mornin' English.  Cloudy & 45 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Gotta straighten out the yard today, then Grandson's 1st birthday party.  He's really into Thomas (wonder how that happened...).

krapug - First off, glad you are allright and able to report in.  Hope the power company gets the heat back on for ya.  My parents in WV are on the mountain top with a couple feet of snow and no juice as well.

88 - Dunce Duh...2 generators.  1 for the house, 1 for the layout.

anjdevil - Be careful my friend.  I fear what may happen when the juice comes back on....

Just remember folks, all will be well because tape is being cut throughDots - Sign

Chief - What? No doughnuts? Captain  Or might that create a visual faux-pas?

Good day.  And remember everybody, weather drives ratings, so if you've had enuff, work on the layout.

Morning guys, Slept in, Mischief

 Cloudy and cool here,

Wife and I ran trains last night and something is up on the layout. Had 4 pile ups all at the switches, both Lionel 42" 027 right hand ones, almost like they were flipping by themselves. I tried several different trains and it did not seem to change it. So I ran into the back of the train on the back loop (twice) and off the track on the south switch. (twice) Both very hard places to reach. Bang Head

Prayers for all of those out there on the east coast.  Angel

I hope John is holding up okay.

Also my K-Line Kid flying the airplane quit. I hope it is a wiring thing and not the unit. If it is the unit Guess I will be giving Bob a PM to see if he can look at it. Bang Head
