Tony and Alan, I'm in total agreement here about the bashing business, because none of us really wants to get into that nonsense.

Alan, if it works, that's great, but I do share Tony's concern about the reaction time.

No bashing intended, but do you know if the Lionel breaker has a fast enough reaction time to truly protect the MTH TIU?

If someone bashed you simply because you used a Lionel product, then they're jerks. As I understand it, older breakers may not have a quick enough response time. I'm not saying the Lionel part doesn't, I don't know. Just saying that older breakers, in general, don't respond fast enough & so don't offer any real protection. That's why a lot of guys are putting in fast acting breakers & fuses between the older transformers & the layout these days.

I must concur with most of the posters here, in that I have never had a "problem" on the OGR Forum, and that I have enjoyed my tenure there. I am much more a tin-litho, toy train guy, and have a particular interest in pre-war European tinplate, and , when I have posted on some of those topics over there, the post generates little response. So what! Posting is like fishing; sometimes you put the hook in the water, and they bite, and sometimes they don't. I look forward to posting on this forum, as well as on the others I belong to.[:)]

I got bashed for suggestng that you could use a LIONEL 91 circuit breaker as a protection to MTH's TIU instead of replaceable inline fuses.

How dare I suggest using an OLD LIONEL product to protect a NEW state-of-the-art MTH one!!!

I tried it on my layout with five engines running on the same loop. No problem.

However, everytime I placed my thread in a relavant OGR topic in the forum, my thread suddenly disappeared.

I just gave up stating it anymore!

IMHO: I like all the forums (AOL-OGR-CTT). Each has its own personality. Some are more fun than the others; some are more informative than the others.

It all depends...on my mood and where my layout building is heading.[8D]

Being a refugee from the OGR forum, I have seen the "us vs. them" mentality, and I must say I don't care for it. This thread was started by a flamethrower and I won't dignify his comments with a direct response. However, I look forward to the free exchange of ideas and advice on the CTT forum. I happen to like any and all trains and enjoy reading and talking about them. Glad to see lots of familiar names over here--even one of my favorites--THOR!! :D

Hey, everybody, where's Martin? You guys didn't cast him out already, did you? I've never seen anybody cast out from any forum except for extreme political(read irrelevant) personal remarks. Most people aren't cast out....they just go off and sulk and sniffle. If anybody were to be cast out it would have been Ol' Odd-d for my rather divergent views. Even the guy who called me a filthy name wasn't cast out. I guess some prima donnas just sulk if they are not the center of attention. This forum seems to have some pretty level headed participants, maybe it will turn out better. Odd-d

That was good Jon!! And I'm only going to say this once because I want to get on to having fun with trains, so don't expect any more replies on this from me....I only did what I did out of fear. If you had been treated like a third-class human being on OGR like I was and was called a "weenie" for liking TOY trains (all are toys BTW), then you would have done what I did. Neil put my fears to rest. End of subject as far as I'm concerned....On to talking about TOY TRAINS! :)

Well, I am a 2-Railer and after reading this post I certainly don't feel welcome. I don't insult other guys opinions and I don't like my opinions being insulted. As I said in my first post,"There is no right or wrong way." Hey like John Lennon said,"Whatever gets you thru the night-it's alright!" Besides I still enjoy toy trains even though I like the scale end of things. If I guy has a nice toy train layout I can appreciate that and I would like to hope most guys would be open minded enough in the reverse situation.
If I see a post about something I not interested in I move on. I try to only say things that are positive. But I guess my kind isn't wanted around here. Well, thank God I still have the Atlas forum.

Hi guys,

I've read all of your comments today on this thread as well as several other related threads. I'm pleased that many of you felt that this site would be an appropriate place to talk about trains. I hope the folks that have been here all along will see the new arrivals as a benefit rather than a threat. I know many of the new people joining personally, and they're good guys.

There are a couple of housekeeping points I'd like to make:

-- There's no real "administrator" of the CTT forum. I'm the editor of CTT, but I am not the chief guy in charge of this forum. Instead, the forum is a shared responsibility between the CTT editorial staff and another Kalmbach Publishing Co. employee named Erik Bergstrom (he goes by Bergie on this forum). Erik is in charge of trains.com, the umbrella website where the Kalmbach train-related magazines (Model Railroader, Trains, Garden Railways, Classic Trains, and CTT) all "live."

-- No one has the title of "moderator" either. We expect everyone to be respectful and moderate themselves. The CTT staff already has a full workload, and none of us wishes to spend extra time sending out emails asking people to behave appropriately. My rule of thumb as far as behavior goes is this: We shouldn't be embarassed to have our wives or mothers read the CTT forum.

-- CTT is not structured like O Gauge Railroading magazine. I don't have the same responsibilities that Rich Melvin does and vice versa. It's the same with the other members of the CTT staff and the OGR staff, so it will be confusing if you try to compare how CTT and the CTT forum works with past experiences on the OGR forum. If you have any questions, just email me directly at [e-mail]. If it's a technical question, I may not be able to answer it myself and I will forward it to Erik.

-- To the best of my knowledge, no one has ever been kicked out for posting something inappropriate on the CTT forum, but there have been a few people that have posted things on the Model Railroader section of the forum that caused Erik to ban them from the MR forum, which, in effect, bans them from the other Kalmbach forums, too.

-- The CTT staff makes posts on the forum once in a while, but the forum isn't about us, it's about you. If you've got a burning question about anything please just email me or one of the other staff members directly. I'll see that the response gets posted if it's something that everyone would benefit from reading.

-- There are some paid ads on the CTT website, mostly from CTT magazine advertisers, but they don't fully cover the cost of operating the website and the forum.

I hope this answers some of your questions. If you've got more, just ask.

hey guys,
I'm acid from the ogr forums. I had 1000+ posts over there. I don't really think anyone was shunned. at the ogr forum. We picked fun at HO people, but there were many posts ranging from 3rd rail brass models, 2 rail operation, to restoring old marx engines. I operated in conventional mode with 1 ps2.0 loco and lots of old postwar and such and loved the ogr forum. Unfortunately they decided to drive a nail into their own coffins-no one survives a forum fee in the same shape it was before. I hope to be hanging out here a lot (and already recognize several ogr guys:) and hope that this ill will??? shown by a few posts are just a few people with "stron" personalities (we had some in the ogr forum as well). anyway, cheers:)

Oh boy! These seem like bad times for train forums. I never seen so many people with a common bond argue about every little thing.

As for hi rail vs low rail, who cares!
The fact of the matter is that CTT regularly reviews expensive trains that would not be categorized as 'toy'; and seems to reserve the back cover for some of the most expensive two handed trains available, Third Rail Sunset Models.

Myself, I prefer 0/027.
I would rather not argue about these small details, they are all model trains.

I registered some time ago, but this is my first post to this forum.

I've been reading it regularly since the official OGR announcement on Monday, and my reaction is one of utter disgust. It seems that there have been far too many over-generalizations made about the OGR forum.

The comment that bothers me most is the reference to the "cliques" on the OGR forum. I have been on the OGR forum for a little over a year, reading it closely and carefully, and have never seen any such action that could fall into this category. Everyone that on the OGR forum is greeted warmly, barring the person who enters touting wrong and dangerous information(it has happened). Most of these people, at that, soon realize where they went wrong and are well accepted.

This forum claims to not be "cliquish", however I find it hard to believe with one of the above posts

"Neil has gotten a letter from me about these new arrivals"

In alerting a forum administrator about new arrivals to the forum in such a way, you are, in effect, creating your own little "clique" by turning away people based purely on the fact that they came from the OGR forum.

Something else that really bothers me in this particular topic is the list given at the beginning of this topic about what is grounds for rejection from the forum

"If you dont own TMCC or DCS........... you an outcast!"

Not so. There are plenty of conventional operators that are well received on the OGR forum. I can put you in touch with some if you would like.

"If you like toy trains on Lionel track....your an outcast!"

I've used Lionel track since joining OGR, and have always openly proclaimed it. No one has ever said anything negative to me on that subject. There are plenty of other people who use tubular track on OGR. Again, I'd be glad to put you in touch with some.

"If you dont need electronics in your engines...your an outcast!"

There is plently of advice exchanged every day about engines lacking electronics in any form. Take a look and see.

"If you buy a $1000 + engine that doesn't work and you cant take it apart and fix it yourself....your an outcast!"

Taking apart an $1000 engine is almost always suggested with the condition that "you are comforatable doing so". If you aren't, the advice is always to go to the local shop, or to call the company. If you don't use command control, and can't take an engine apart to fix it, there's not a whole lot that can be done to it by you.

Not so. Again, I have openly proclaimed my love of postwar since first joining the forum, and, again, have been very well received. Once again, I would be glad to put you in touch with many OGR postwar operators.

If you own and operate standard gauge....your an outcast!

There are plenty of standard gauge operators on OGR. Again, I'd be glad to put you in touch.

Then, another member of this forum responded to this comment

"THOR--Of course you didn't have problems with OGR---you were not an outcast! "

These three posts contradict themselves. The initial poster generalizes that anyone meeting one of those conditions is automatically an outcast. Thor hit 4 of the conditions listed above and he's done fine. Then another tells him that of course he's done fine, he's not an outcast. Well, Thor should be according to what the initial post said.
