trestle article in July issue - same photos as Scenic Express catalog
Posted by dadurling on Wednesday, June 6, 2007 3:52 PM

Has anyone noticed that the photos in the Grand Central Gems trestle article are exactly the same as the ones in the Scenic Express catalog?

Any explanation?

I can't talk for CTT but I would think they had permission from Scenic Express to put that in the magazine since Scenic Express advertizes in CTT !! It would showcase the product & help Scenic Express sell more of them . I believe trestles are a very sought after thing for model RRs & everyone won't scratchbuild them !! This of course is my own opinion & in no way affiliated with either of the above mentioned !!

Thanks, John

And?  I don't see a problem with this.  Being that this product was showcased in the article, it is only fitting that they use the photos as it would lessen any likelihood that they would get it wrong.  They did use some original photos on the cover, etc.  I am glad for the article, while I may not use the product, I do intend to use some of the ideas to fabricate my own trestle.

Adding to the above--How could there be a problem since the photographer, Stan Trzoniec, is also the author. The cover photo is his as well.

Actually, we bought the article. The author also sent copies of the photos to Scenic Express. Scenic Express published them. We received a new catalog - and discovered the duplication - when we were too late in the production process to do anything other than select a secondary image for the cover.

Unfortunate, but stuff happens.

What difference does it make anyway?  I didn't get this catalog or flyer and yet I have the information I wanted and by the way I am one of the many who would like to have such a scene on my layout, so I am very glad for the article and useful pics.  If you had reshot them with a different model or from a different angle, what real improvement would have been made?  I say thanks for the informative issue - one of the best ones this year.

Bob,

Thanks for the explanation. I knew there had to be a story there somewhere because it didn't seem likely that CTT would ever engage in what could appear to be an advertorial.

Great article all the same and keep up the good work - love the magazine!

Jim, the issue is buying something with exclusive rights to the text and photos, and it appearing elsewhere.

But that is water under the bridge, now. We're well into our work on the October issue.
