Tender question
Posted by traindaddy1 on Tuesday, May 29, 2007 7:51 PM

I have a Lionel New York Central Slope-back tender acquired awhile ago as a single item.  Inside the shell is etched a number 8300 T - 15.  There is circuit board, back-up light, off-on toggle switch and 4 pronged terminal.

I went to the Lionel web site but could only find a diagram of the tender with a weight but no circuit board.

Question: Would you know what the circuit board does and how to activate it?

As always, many thanks.

Hello Traindaddy!      Your Tender goes with the 8516 Steam Switcher that Lionel made in 1985. The circuit board in your Tender is a Combo Rectifier/Reverse unit for the 8516 as it had a Can Motor instead of a Pullmore & it also operates the Light on the rear of the tender when in reverse. The set it came with had a Gondola, Crane Car, Bunk Car, & Work Caboose. The Rolling Stock was Grey & Black in color also. So, If you can find a 8516 on ebay or a Train Show you've got it made.( The 8516 looks like the postwar 1615 yardgoat & it smokes too) Hope this helps. Take Care.

Hello Traindaddy!     You're very welcome for the help.  BTW- The 8516 is the first Yard Goat of its kind (1615 style) to have a Can Motor,Electronic Circuit Board, & Smoke Generator among its features. Lionel tried, But failed in the late 40s to use a Smoke Unit in the Steam Switchers. The Smoke Stack was too long & narrow for a Smoke Pellet to fit & they did not use liquid smoke in those days. (not until 1957) Take Care.
