Best Atlanta Area Train Stores?
Posted by txspecial on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 2:50 PM

Can any of you recommend the best Atlanta area train stores or LHSs for O gauge equipment?  I'll be in town on business for a couple of days with a car on Friday.

In particular, who would have the best selection of MTH Premier and Lionel Standard O items?

Anything like Chicagoland in the Chicago area?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I don't think you will find a huge store like Chicagoland in Atlanta, but there are only a few stores to choose from.  Memory Station, Legacy Station, and I think one or two more.  One of our members here works at Memory station which I believe is in Lawrenceville, GA.  He could fill you in on what they have.  I am sad to say that this state is not well served with the number of train stores.  I am about 3 hours south of Atlanta which puts it out of a "quick trip to the train store".

Bob, as Dennis mentioned I work at Memory Station, we're in Watkinsville, GA which is just outside of Athens, home of UGA.  The store is on business/old rt. US441 about a 1/2 mile south of downtown Laugh [(-D] Watkinsville.  Legacy Station is in Lawrenceville, closer in to Atlanta.  We carry Lionel, some Atlas, and special run cars.  It's a pretty even split between O-standard and traditional O/O-27.  We've received some reefers, boxcars, and a few other odds and ends from the 2007 catalogue last week, I put a list on the Cooffee Pot thread last Thurs.  Legacy favors MTH, last time I was there, with Lionel secondary.

We're open 9 to 6 Mon. through Thurs. and 9 to 7 Fri. and Sat., closed Sundy.

Dennis and Roger,

Thanks very much for the help.  I'm not sure if I can get away to drive out to Athens to see Memory Station, Roger, but I'll surely try, and hope to meet you there.

I really appreciate your timely replies to the question given the very short advance notice.

Rgds,

Bob

What part of the city do you call home?  Try these folks; they are most pleasant.

Bob,

Atlanta Trains (www.atlantatrains.com) has a nice store. They are in the Roswell area, N / NW of downtown.  About three months ago, they had a pretty good stock of MTH items.  Atlanta Trains covers all scales.

Legacy Station is in Lawrenceville, NE of downtown.  They have a good selection of both Lionel and MTH - about evenly split.  I believe they have some Atlas as well.  They too cover all scales.

Trainmasters is in the Dulth, GA area, N / NE of town.  There location is great as they are across the street from the Southeastern Railway Museum (http://www.srmduluth.org/).   The museum has a nice collection, including a Southern E6 that powered the Southern Crescent.  Again, Trainmasters has a nice size collection of alternate scales as well.  They are mostly Lionel.

As mentioned previously, Memory Station is also a great Lionel dealer.  I would venture to say Memory Station has the largest collection of Lionel new / used in the state.

For Lionel - Legacy Station, Memory Station or Trainmasters is a good bet. For MTH, I would suggest Atlanta Trains or Legacy Station.

I have done business with all of the dealers I have mentioned and recommend all of them without reservation.  They are all a nice group of folks to deal with.

If you wish to provide more information as to the area where you will be staying, either reply on this thread or email me and I will be happy to provide you with directions to any of the above stores.  With Atlanta traffic, depending upon the time of day, the highway routes that many of the Internet sites gives you will put you in an hour or more of traffic Smile [:)]

Luther,

Thanks very much for the very helpful information.  We'll be located fairly centrally in the Atlanta area(14th St NE) and I'll have plenty of time, so I think I'll be able to cover most of the options you suggested.  I really appreciate your guided tour, and please let me know if I can reciprocate for Houston metro area.

JD,

Thanks very much.  We'll be on 14th St NE in Atlanta, and driving is a pleasure in an area different from home (not that I don't like Houston, I do very much).

I will definitely visit Atlanta Trains, your recommendation is most helpful.  I gather Latherby is more oriented to repair, so I may skip it for another with greater retail presence.

Thanks again for your help,

Bob
