trainmaster transformer?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, February 22, 2007 1:58 PM

I obtained a Trainmaster RW 110 transformer I have instruction book from original set. On the back where the AC cord comes out there is also a single strand of wire about three inches long. I have no idea what it is for and it is not mentioned in the manual. It has a single voltage control knob, directional and whistle buttons. It has connectors A,B,C,D,U on the back. Also lists 25v at U wiht whistle button down. Can anyone tell me what the wire is for? Just getting back into O-gauge.

Thanks in advance

No. It's just protruding from hole just above the AC cord

Someone might have added an equipment ground, connected to the metal parts inside.  Why not open it up and see what it's connected to?  Here is the repair manual:

I don't have an RW to look at; but transformer terminals are often riveted to the case or terminal board, with a solder lug on the inside under the upset end.  I imagine that the lug might have broken, as it often does, if yours is made that way.  I have repaired these by drilling out the old terminal and simply replacing it with a machine screw, with a new solder lug under the head and a hex nut on the outside to hold it in place.  The knurled nut then sits farther from the case by the thickness of the added nut; but otherwise the result is very like the original.
