$29.00 worth of Post War Frieght

Took a shot at some very common post war frieght on a train auction site and recieved the material today. Five post war frieght cars for $29.00 plus $8.00 shipping.

All typical super common o27 stuff, but remarkably clean and free of notable damage. On inspecting these, it appears they kind of cannibalize a bunch of parts to make up these low pirced groups. The ATSF box car appears to have at one time been an operating box car with the famous "blue man". This is just the shell, with a set of plastic trucks attached.

Likewise all of these have plastic trucks screwed into the base and there is some other "jimmying" to come away with a car that looks pretty good and rolls.

However, for the price, I think it's a nice bargain and pretty much exactly what I was looking for - low cost, common freight, from which I can make similarly styled consists. I could have spent $12.00 plus $8.00 shipping for just the red Baby Ruth car on ebay, and it might very well have had the same substitution of parts.

All told, I feel comfortable I got what I paid for - actually probably considerably more than I paid for and will probably pick up some more of these as I get a chance.

maybe a nice 6017 bare bones, no lights, no plastic windows, no smokestack version?

Frank, I've bought several "collection of's" on Choochoo.  Usually a mix and you can tell some trucks exchanged and etc.  I've ended up with great luck though.  I've taken parts from one group and added to another and come up with some great PW rolling stock.  Good going.

As we both have experienced, these low priced groups are cannibalized, but for the money, it's quite a nice bargain.

I would probably stay away from groups of low proced tank cars, as teh trucks are more prominent on those, but for common frieght. gondolas and hoppers, I think this is an excellent resource.

I won a group of gons with a tank car in it.  Tank car [what I really wanted] came in excellent shape.  Ended up with a long red gon which I never have had.  So won all around as got it dirt cheap and their shipping is always low compared to other sites [if it is a TrainCity item].  You working one of your "strange shifts", I see.  I was reclinerizing [my word I made up for falling asleep in recliner while watching TV].  Just woke up and now headed for bed.  Gooood night.

Frank, I gotta admitt I am extremely gelous of your layout and taste in PW items. I love the 40's and early 50's PW stuff and the pictures I've seen of your 2344's running with the 2400 series car was great - I've always imagined that but never seen it before. I'd vote for a 2035 to pull your new rollingstock - congrats again!

Great buy Frank! Five cars for $37 with shipping is a very good deal.  You can fix the trucks to your liking.

 I have some Lehigh Valley quad & two bay hoppers that are post war and like the old truck assemblies on them, and several gondolas.
