"Must Have" for NYC / Hudson Fans
Posted by luther_stanton on Friday, November 24, 2006 8:18 AM

If you are a fan of the NYC or the Hudson steam locomotive you should consider Thoroughbreds: New York Central's 4-6-4 Hudson, the most famous class of steam locomotive in the world by Alvin Staufer.

The book was published in 1974 so I am not certain if it is still in print. I picked up a copy on Ebay a few weeks ago. Amazon also shows a few available through some of their merchants / sellers.

Wow, what a find this book is! A lot of pictures of Hudsons and a good narrative on the history and development of this fine locomotive.

I believe it may still be in print. Al is usually set up in the Purple Hall at York. I've bought editions of all his NYC and Pennsy books from him (and Swanberg's New Haven Power) from him at York.

DITTO!! I've been wearing out my copy of it for about 20 years.

What a shame that NYC failed to save even one of the Hudsons, not the first one or one of the Dreyfuss-styled 20th Century locos.
