Poor Man's Lash-up.

Here's my Lionel SD90MAC with an MTH un-powered SD90MAC. Not to shabby. It's interesting that there are some construction differences between the two. The Lionel has a flat hood mid-section, while the MTH version has an arched hood. Also the Lionel SD90 has a squared off trailing hood while the MTH trailing hood is angled. Its nice to sit and check out the differences. Maybe one of you diesel-heads can explain the differences.:D  The casting detail and paint on both bodies are terrific, but both companies really need to improve their trucks. The cast-in brake cylinders, lack of air lines, and springs just does'nt cut it.

The Lionel looks like a SD9043Mac. The MTH maybe a SD90Mac-H. ( Only going by pictures I've seen, NO real knowledge of the differences).

nice scenery. When I first saw this, I thought there was gonna be a tug of war to see if Lionel can outpull MTH., with bets being placed.

The models aren't the same.  The SD90 series has a different selection of locos, my guess being that some are more fuel efficent, and other characteristics that make them different. It is interesting though, to see the different gray paint they have, and the ditchlight placement.

Its also interesting to note the placement of the lighted number boards, with MTH's being above the windshield. I'm going to order an MTH light kit for it.

What is really amazing is how close in color the two manufacturers are.

Maybe it is just me, but why in the Censored [censored] do the so-called Dummy Engines not come with the lighting systems already installed. Granted there would be an upcost but just a plain and simple lighting system for marker lites, etc. Or if you want to run a dummy in the lead position a headlight could also be available, afterall isn't that what most of them do now with the AA pwr/dmy units.

My rant for the day, watching the (PC)news tends to make me a little testy. My 2 cents [2c] Grumpy [|(]

Have noticed that the location of the ditch lights on the front ends are at differant hieghts, in the third picture I noticed that behind the cab on the 8006 an indentation that the other SD90 doesn't have. I am not a big diesel fan but even I know that there are a few models of each type of diesel locomotive made, maybe one for mountain regions or for long distance flat terrain.

I know your post was made in 2006, but any MTH plastic bodied diesel can out pull its Lionel counter part. All Lionel plastic diesels with Lion drive trucks have only 8 wheels driving out of 12, MTH has much heavier construction and more weight inside the shell and from 2006+ 12 geared wheels on each truck, the middle wheel doesn't provide very much traction but it makes the 2 traction providing axles further apart increasing track adhesion. Also MTH engines are geared lower.
