Looks like you can use them for good packing material?
Or some thing to clean fish with?

The sale of boxes always bugs me.. Not that I mind some collector putting his trains in a proper box.. But I always feel this is some shady dealer planning to pass off a repaint or restored item as Mint with original boxes.. Otherwise why pay $4,500 for a few cardboard boxes?

I see they sold for $1750. Are these really collector items? How do you insure cardboard boxes?

I like the shipping cost. [:)] That will be a fun insurance label:

Package Contents: cardboard packaging
How packaged: carboard packaging is packed in packaging.
Our packaging or your packaging: ummm... yes
Fragile: packaging
Special instructions: please keep packaging dry as packaging may get wet if wet out.

Maybe an item destined for a museum.... "Blue Comet with original boxes, circa 19XXl"

The current price is up to $1750.00, and I can not believe any one would pay that much for a set of cardboard boxes. Seems like ebay is ripe for picking up suckers!!
How about $40,000.00 for a 6024 boxcar? See the post: If You Have The $$.
Makes me wonder what I could get for my 275 watt ZW on ebay, with the way prices are going maybe $25,000.00? Not that I want to sell the ZW. It seems that terms like rare & extremely rare gets the MEGA MONEY on ebay.

Those boxes will boost the value of a top-condition Blue Comet set by more than $1750! Boxed Ex or better Blue Comet sets will fetch prices into the 5 figures. Few enough of the sets survive intact. Far fewer are in great condition. Of those few, how many have the original boxes? This is out of my league (unfortunately), but don't mistake the buyer: he's made a good investment in all likelihood, and I wish it were me. Toy trains just don't get much better than a boxed, top-condition Blue Comet set (a State Set, IVES Circus Set, or an AF Presidentail Set in like shape are about it).

Lest anyone mistake me for a nutty collector-type, I;d even run it [:D]

Well some may pay that much for a piece of cardboard but not me! I wouldn't give em $25 for those old cardboard boxes. It sounds like some collector with very depp pockets bought the lot.

That is why I asked; because I was wondering if anyone thought this was a good purchase. Looking at the buyers history, I see he's also recently purchased said Blue Comet set in good condition. And judging from other purchases, he has DEEP pockets. If he can recoup what he paid, then the joke may be on us.

palallin,

Thanks for enlightening me. I guess it's out of my league as far as collecting goes. I can't fathom being able to buy just boxes for that kind of money. But then again I can't see myself ever buying a Rolls Royce. It's just a whole different ballgame.

I definitely have to agree with palallin on this one. I certainly think that they are worth it. I'm a collector and, for me, anyway, there's something amazing about having a train from many decades ago that still has the box it came in!
