Tuning up/Repairing O22 Switches-Resources?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, March 2, 2006 8:30 PM
Does anyone have a resource they can reccommend for tuning up and / or repairing O22 switches. This can be an article, DVD of train repair, service manual - whatever.

I have a switch that isn't getting power through the track-haven't tried a fixed voltage plug yet.

Kindest regards,

Pete

Here is a link to Olsen's library:

I would look first at the fixed-voltage jack. It has a contact that is supposed to disconnect the track voltage to the switch machine when the plug is in and connect it when it is out. That contact might be bent or dirty.

Pete; the procedure that I am discribing is for the post-war 022 switches, have you tested it by jumping the three posts with a wire from the center to either outside post. The constant voltage plug-in could be the problem as a center piece must make contact with a strip of metal that is held in place by tension, usually all that is needed is to readjust the metal piece with a pair of needle nose pliers.
Do you know how to take the switch apart, separate the solenoid from the switch base, there are two screws holding it together. Also there are contacts inside the switch that need cleaning from time to time.
Remember this is for post-war 022 switches not 23011 or 5400 series switch.

Hi,

Repairing and tuning up of O22 switches is covered in the following CTT issues:
May 1998, p. 90; December 2000, p. 102; and Fall 1988, p. 66

Check the silver connecting straps on the underside. One of them may be slighly broken. You will have to re-solder it then. Also, rust under the rails may be causing the malfunction.

Thanks to all who responded to the newbie request for repair info. It was indeed a metal strip not making contact with the booster pin on the fixed voltage plug.

Once this was rebent to make contact, everything was reassembled and it works great.

Once again you guys are an invalueable source of info!

Now if I can just work up the bravery to put a new plug on my ZW!

Thanks again,

Pete
