Nope! I'm not an AOL member any longer and have no intention of becoming one. My former screen name was relinquished when I quit AOL--well over a year ago--and after six months (I believe it is) anyone can sign up for the same screen name.

I look in on the AOL discussions from time to time just to enjoy the entertainment of watching guys throw bricks at one another. Truthfully, I don't imagine I even visit there (via AOL's freebie read-but don't post arrangement) more than once a month or so. There are still a few earlier regulars--good guys, all-- hanging on there, but most participants today are a bunch of anonymous clowns who just like to see themselves post innane comments about anything (or anybody) except the hobby itself.

As far as toy trains are concerned, AOL today is pretty much a not-so-vast wasteland--a mere shell of what it once was. Sad to have seen that happen because the AOL boards were the grandaddy of them all, but such is life!

I get free Internet sevice nowadays, so could think of no compelling reason to even consider re-joining AOL.

Follow-up:

Just made a brief visit to the AOL boards to see what "I" have been saying! Gee, what a tremendous number of nasty posts I've made there! Shame on me!

Those who know me--the real me, that is--know full well when there's a troll or a clone at work, and they have already pointed it out in the treads there. Pat knows me, Neil knows me, and Charlie knows a bit about me. As long as those folks and a few other regulars over there who have been around for a good while are able to discern who is real and who is not, I don't worry much about it.

Dave, you have a basset hound, too! Here's our Darcy asleep with her tongue sticking out:

And FWIW, Merle Haggard was fantastic in his day. That guy saw things more clearly than most people ever will. [;)]

Clint,

Great hound there!!!! Actually, the neighbor down the road has the Bassett, and an invisible fence, but those of you who have hounds know that an invisible fence WON't stop a hound from chasing a rabbit. Among hound lovers, there's an irreverent saying that even the gates of Hell won't stop a rabbit hound.

Anyway, this Basset, named Dixie, oftentimes will go on a rabbit expedition and during this particular expedition, Dixie came over to meet BB and I gave the hounds a bowl of water as they'd both been out chasing a rabbit. The basett isn't quite as fast as the beagle, but he enjoys the hunt about as well as BB

BTW, the bassett is one tough hound, I've seen him take on an aggressive dog 3 times his size.

-----------------------

Now I've got to subscribe to AOL to meet Allan's clone! (Allan meeting Allan would be like matter meeting anti-matter)_ what entertainment!!!

Having been an AOL subscriber for the past 10 years has been a real learning experience. I've learned tollerance and good manners when responding to posts. I've learned that no matter how much you think you know, there is always somebody who's smarter. I've learned that taking the time to compose well worded posts ( usually my 5th attempt ) can save much unwanted backlash.

But most importantly, I've learned that if you spend more than 2 years posting on an AOL board the cost of psychiatric help can really bite into your toy train budget.[:D]

David:

You no longer need to subscribe to AOL to read (but not reply) on the various boards. Here's the link that will get you there (I think):

http://messageboards.aol.com/aol/en_us/boards.php?boardId=540820&func=2&channel=Home

You can see the "anti-Allan" taking on many of "my" old amigos (good guys, even if I often disagreed with them), including a few new ones I don't even know.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I do kind of wi***he guy knew how to write, punctuate properly, and spell!

I would say that it's a distinct possibility that some of the "new" posters on the AOL Boards have posted to this thread ;).

It was clear from the first post that Allen Miller and Alllan Miller weren't Allan Miller. Different spelling, different writing styles. It's actually quite difficult to imitate other people's writing style.

And I would say there's a distinct possibility you're right, Neil! And I'll bet we both could name the names if we cared to. But the kids appear to be having fun, so we might just as well let them carry on.

Meanwhile, I trust that you and Pat will keep them on their toes over there in AOL-land.

Boy, ain't THAT the truth! Ours chases rabbits, cats, bugs, deer, other dogs, mice, worms, leaves, squeaky toys - you name it! She seems to prefer cats over anything else, though. This is the fourth Basset we've owned and by far the most eccentric (and the fastest!).

Clint- That picture of your Bassett Hound is a hoot! It looks like he's thinking: "Hey Clint! Put that Camera away. I'm too pooped from chasing rabbits in order to pose for a picture" [;)][:)] Take Care.

Yeah Keith, from time-to-time she has a habit of falling asleep with her tongue sticking out. She really is a little odd. "One brick shy of a full load", ya know? [%-)]

Clint
