Did you see the Foose/Coddington custom Studie that sold last nite at the auction? It was an older custom but still held-up well. Personally my fav was the Avanti, the original not the later version. Although the Hawks weren't bad.

Wow! That's a '57 Golden Hawk next to the mini in the bottom pic! I'm in the drive-in having a malt, but mine was like the red one, except the grill was square. I think the Hawks were designed by Raymond Loewy and were a little ahead of their time. Where is Chiefie in his Corvair?

Well, at least I got to ride in my dad's '49 Stude convertible as a kid. I was an ugly dark green with an nice tan top.

These are great pictures...I live in South Bend, Indiana where studebakers were made, My father worked there until they closed. My first car was a lark station wagon, straight six, 3 on the column, columbia blue, ahh, those were the days....Nice to see them in your layout.....tom

I used to collect Studies and took them to the meets. There is never a bunch of loyal and NICE people than the Studebaker owners.

The original 1953 Studebaker Starliner was designed by Robert Bourke, who was an employee of Raymond Loewy Associates, and was assigned to the Studebaker styling section in South Bend. By that time, Loewy probably didn't have much to do with the actual styling work (his office was in New York), but was more responsible for approving staff designs and selling them to Studebaker management. I don't know that Bourke was involved in any of the railroad work that Loewy did, but he also designed the Mack R and RO series trucks.

I have a 1963 Avanti R1 in the garage, which Loewy was directly involved in designing. Not as big as a GG-1, a PRR S-1 or a Fairbanks-Morse switcher (locomotive designs from RLA), but it'll go around much tighter radius curves...

Glad you joined us, JDM - Welcome! Any chance of posting a pic of your R1 - especially the instrument panel...and especially the one above the drivers head? Weren't they backlit RED? Must look awesome at night!

Does yours look like the one shown in Spank's Cove above?

Hello Tom ! Don't the police at Hopkins Airport in Cleveland block Corvairs at the entrance also.? [;)] I think it has something to do with a regulation prohibiting flammable and dangerous material at the Airport[:)] ...Keith
