LIONEL re-issue 6464 boxcar sets
Posted by DOUGLAS NASH on Monday, October 3, 2022 2:45 PM

Hello guys..........looking to find out some information on the LIONEL re-issue 3 car sets of 6464 boxcars from around 2000

I have taken up collecting the sets and many turn up on E-bay listings.

I would appreciate if some member knowsd them well, as to how many sets were made in the series and also if you can tell me what road name cars were included in each so I find one, I know it is correct.

Also, were any of the sets harder to get as it appears the price range is large, or is that just a seller's preference for what he wants.

Thank you for taking the time to help me out with this. as I am infamiliar with O scale being an HO-scaler for so long

Regarding prices, in the current/more recent market for the "Series I through Series X" 3 packs(labeled as "6464 01st edition", etc in the list Rob provided), there may not be much of a premium on any of them.

Years ago, the Series I set was considerably more sought after and therefore normally higher priced.  I seem to recall my father paying $300 for that set of 3 cars since he joined in the hunt mid-series several years after they first came out.  He was probably not the only person to pay such a premium almost 20 years ago.

While I haven't been searching ebay recently to see what prices have actually been realized in completed auctions (you should always only look at completed/sold auctions vs just current "offerings"), I have noticed in other on-line auctions that this Series has generally been selling for probably below $60 for any set of three.  I've seen some go for probably low $30 range for a 3 pack as issued with the master box (maybe not outer shipping carton) for the three cars.  Even with adding the 15% premium the buyer will pay to the auction house (for the particular auctions I've observed), most are probably landing somewhere well under the $60-$75 mark for any set of three cars.

Short answer is you may pay slightly more for some than others, but I would not expect to be paying any extreme sums like I remember my dad paying for Series I so many years ago.

I sold two sets last year and I had to substantially drop the price to sell them. Pretty much all the postwar remakes have sold poorly. My experience is, anything deliberately sold as collectable, isin't.

Yep.  My mom believed her Hummels would bring big bucks.  She was shocked when she went to sell them.
