gauze plaster wrap

just found some i had purchased about 8 years ago, but somehow never used. Is it still any good?

If it has remained dry, it ought to be good.

the plaster wrap is fine, but I see that that the holes dont close over as i thought they would. So another  coat is needed. But is that second layer more gauze or a different product?

You have a couple of choices here.  You could just smear on some plaster, or you could add another layer of plaster cloth.  I've done both with pretty much equal results.

Something I've found is that you can pretty much eliminate the holes by smoothing the plaster on the cloth with your fingers after laying the cloth.

I purchased some very old stock gauze plaster wrap from a hobby surplus.  It was actual army surplus.  It worked well, a little dusty but worked.  I had to use a little more water to smooth it out.

Don't worry about the holes. Aren't you gonna cover your hardshell with scenery anyway? I use common leftover household paint to bond scenery to formation, and think of the holes as little toe-holds for the paint and scenery to hold onto.
