DCS and Legacy first time setup
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, December 17, 2016 11:37 PM

Hello

I have recently acquired a Lionel Legacy Command Station (#990) to replace a TMCC command station that had been flooded several years back.  I also have a recently updated to current version (September 2016) DCS system.  I have both the Lionel Supplied cable and the MTH supplied connector cable.  I currently have the Legacy system hooked up as shown in the DCS manual with the 9pin cable and wire runing to the Black terminal post.  The DCS TIU is supplied by a Z4000.  I have in the past sucessfully run DCS and TMCC together.

Whew... wordy I know but I wanted to get the description out of the way.

Now for the questions:

What is this Orange card that came with my new Legacy equipped locomotive?  Do I need to plug it in to the controller to run it the first time?  What are the Blue Cards?  Black Card?  I thought we got away from cartridge gaming...Whistling

Is this setup acceptable for first time running of a Legacy locomotive?

Also, I happen to own a K-Line locomotive with Railsounds (I think I will have to dig up the box) will that work in Command Mode with this system or will I need to do something different with its electronics (my LHS has the MTH Protosounds 3.0 steam upgrade kit, at the price I got that K-Line a drop in of DCS would still be less expensive than buying a new MTH steam engine)?

I think that is all for now.  I have attempted to read the Legacy Manual, and it seems kind of hard to follow, and less user intuative than the DCS system.  That having been said, I am not trying to start a MTH vs Lionel arguement, just kind of annoyed that Lionel does not even bother to acknowledge the existance of DCS in their Legacy manual.

Not nearly as annoying as finding out that the Legacy System battery charger had failed after only one use....and that this is not an isolated incident.  Well, I am using Duracell AA batteries for the moment and it is working.  Got my Legacy locomotive working (easy once I determined that the battery charger was not charging).  TMCC locomotive initially would not respond.  Had to reprogram its address.  Somewhere along the way I ended up with a "ghost" locomotive that will not go away (E90?) or is that some error code?   Maybe I will post a screenshot of the Lionel handheld later.

As other posts I have found on here have noted, the MTH throttle does everything I could ever want with the Lionel locomotives, so the lack of a battery charger will probably be a minimal issue.

Now on to the K-line locomotive.  I actually have the paper manual for that one so I will give that a shot next.
