Lionel #1033 Repair
Posted by steve1946 on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 8:23 AM

This topic has likely been covered but I have a specific question/problem that I would like answered. I replaced the broken old power cord on my #1033 and after a hassle poking the new "tinned" wires through the little eyelets on the coil and laminations assembly fiberboard discovered a couple of broken wires on the underside of the C&LA fiberboard.  I assume that these wires are the ones that conduct the power to the transformer.  I have yet to find a wiring diagram that shows these wires, Olson's wiring diagrams doesn't show them), and was wondering if there is a fix without tearing the entire transformer apart.

Ouch. Yea, this is a problem if the coil wires are broken off. You will have to tear the transformer appart to fix them.

It may be time to retire this 1033 and replace with a shopped KW or newer transformer.

A picture would be helpful.

I have had transformers brought to me for repair after the owner attempted to replace the cord themselves. In one case, the owner "cleaned up" by cutting the wires leading from the eyelets into the primary windings. As far as I was concerned the transformer was not repairable.

If they are the primary coil wires, and they are long enough, they can be reattached to the eyelets. They might need to have the insulation removed from the ends first.

If the 1033 winding are damaged, IMHO it does not pay to repair it. It would be good for parts. (In my area a good used 1033 can be had for around $25-30)
