Lionel L&N Railroad rolling stock?
Posted by Steve1964 on Sunday, October 20, 2013 5:11 PM

Having grown up in Louisville, Ky. in the 1970s, I saw L&N locomotives and cars sometimes several times a day. Now that I collect postwar Lionel, I wonder why Lionel never made any L&N offerings for sale in the good old days.

Has anyone ever seen any 027/Traditional sized rolling stock that would look appropriate with Lionel from the 40s-50s? I am even considering buying decals, and making some L&N stuff, homebrew style.

If anyone has any ideas, please chime in.

This posting does not answer your question, but the following link provides a great number of photos of L&N stock.

Ebay can be a neat search engine. Go to eBay.com, type in Louisville & Nashville and hit search. It will return a variety of Lionel products.

Typing in L&N won't work as well because it returned products of many road names listed as L N (Like New).

Lionel has made L&N products over the years. Back in the nineties they made a full set with a GP-38 diesel along with frieght cars and a bay window caboose. In the modern era, they have made some good L&N stuff. Here recently, they came out with  an F7,GP-9 and a GP-35, Williams has made some L&N locomotives as well.

You might consider the following L&N cars to assemble a traditional size train:

      7909 L&N Small Boxcar '83 - '84

      9121 L&N Flatcar with Bulldozer & Scraper Loads '79 - '79

      9302 L&N Searchlight Car '73 - '78

    16664 L&N Coal Dump Car '93

Except for the 7909 L&N small boxcar, all the above rolling stock is relatively easy to find at affordable prices.  Unfortunately the 7909 L&N small boxcar is relatively rare and takes some searching to find.

Other possibilities to consider are the 9222 L&N flatcar with 2 small trailers and the 16358 L&N gondola with coil covers.

I don't know of a L&N traditional size caboose.  The 16538 (w/ 1041 number on the body) L&N Bay Window Caboose produced in '92 looks a little too big to go with the above traditional sized cars.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for all of the information guys.

What I would really love to have is a traditional sized box car with "The Old Reliable" slogan on the side, more like L&N of the 1950's. This probably does not exist in the smaller size that I would like, so I may have to make my own.

Has anyone seen a source for L&N decals in O gauge? I have seen a few online, mostly for a caboose or passenger car, nothing like what I am looking for.

If anyone has any sources for these earlier era decals, please let me know.

Here are a couple of L&N Old Reliable boxcars. The first is a smaller Kusan boxcar.

And the second is more scale size from Kris Model Trains.

Robert,

I would love to have one of those Kusan cars. Are they pretty rare? Will they hook up and run with Lionel couplers? Since my largest car is only about 9 1/2 inches long, I think the Kris Model Trains car would be too big.

I also see a Lionel Woodside Reefer on Ebay from time to time, but it may be a little big too.

Thanks for the photos!

There is a Kusan gondola with the "Old Reliable" banner for sale on eBay for $15.

You're welcome, Steve. Kusan cars will couple with Lionel cars. Because of their light weight and plastic wheels, some people change out the Kusan trucks and couplers and replace them with something more substantial.

The Old Reliable boxcar is not common, but does appear on eBay from time to time.

We don't encourage buying and selling on the forum. You'll need to take it to personal e-mails.

At the time I wrote that I owned all the L&N made by Lionel. Of course now there's lots more, but you'll be paying lots for powered pieces.
