2004/4004 Crossing Set with Automatic Bell

 American Flyer 2004/4004 Crossing Set with Automatic Bell, cataloged in 1936 and as 2004 only in 1937-8.  The crossing gate rotated 180 degrees and could used as shown above or below, as well as like the below one, but with the vehicle gate rotated 180 degrees in the other direction.  The crossing gate is manually operated only.

The bell (this one is a replacement - the original is smaller) could be actuated by 2 different means and had lots of play value for junior engineers.  An actuating track was included  and could be used with fiber pins in one outside rail,and, if the gate was down, the bell would ring and the bulb on the gate would light automatically when the train crossed the actuating track.  Or the accessory could be kept on power all the time, and the young gate-man could actuate the bell and light by manually lowering the gate as the train went by -- the gate contains the switch.
