3 rail sound units.
Posted by RDG-GEEP7 on Sunday, January 13, 2013 12:59 PM

Hello all and welcome to a new year 2013. I am going to revive a sore subject, the dreaded sound unit for 3 rail locomotives. I have looked high and low for anything available on the market, but come up dry. I recently purchased an MRC 1815B unit with sounds for a emd645/emd645e. It works good enough for me. I installed it into a Williams NW2 shifter and used it's speaker for the sound. With the shell on the engine the sound is not bad. The problem was,the hobby shop listed the sounder as an 1815 with sounds for an Alco 244/sd60/sd70/EMD567B. I have found several other shops around the internet listing it the same way. I e-mailed them and asked if it was an 1815 or 1815B,no one has gotten back to me.I guess it's not that important to them. So,anybody out there know of a REASONABLY priced sound unit for 3 rail A.C. powered engines????? Thanks for your time.Dave.

for sound unit do you mean horn/whistle and bell or engine sounds ect. If its engine sounds and all my best answer is electric railroad www.electricrr.com as they have many train sounds with bell, horn/whistle crew talk and engine revs now for a lower price or discount after deciding which you want goto http://www.mttponline.com/ and buy from him he is boxcar bill on here.

Williams is coming out with something but not sure if its being sold as separate item yet.

Life's hard, even harder if your stupid  John Wayne

Sorry it took so long to reply. Thanks for your input.I checked into the sites that you suggested and saw what was available.Unfortunatly I have a limited income, and I only paid around 100 dollars for a lot of my engines,so it is hard to justify another 100 dollars for a sound system.Even a discount price of $85 is a stretch. I actually got an e-mail back from a hobby shop in York,Pa,and they said that they had 2 of the MRC 1815 units that I was looking for. So I purchased them for $69.plus tax and shipping. I installed them in two of my Williams engines and used the speakers that came with the engines. So far I am happy with the sounds that they put out. Here's hoping that things stay good. Thanks again.

As the old Bard said "all's well that ends well."

Another sound method and the one I use is Lionel 6-26860  and 6-26861 boxcars.  Since I use American Flyer 4B transformers on my home layout I purchased the LIONEL PART #610-5906-001 SOUND ACTIVATION BUTTON which is for use with Lionel AC Transformers with a horn/whistle button, or for Lionel AC Transformers without a horn/whistle button . It works with American Flyer and Marx transfomers (2 buttons are required).
