Trying to find out set number & name for pre war american flyer

I am hoping someone can help identify the set number and/or name for the pre war American flyer set I purchased at an estate sale the other day.  The set contains 3315 black 2-4-2 steam loco, 3199 tender, 1214 baggage car in solid green, 3 of the 1213 passenger cars in solid green & 1217 observation car in solid green.  The cars are 6 1/2" long. I think the set may have been introduced around 1934 - 1935 but can't find this exact set in either catalog.  There is a set in the 1934 with green cars just like these but the engine shown is not this exact engine.  I would appreciate any help.

A photo or two would be helpful, but I'll give it a shot.  The engine that you mention, the 3315 was matched up with the  the 3199 tender and the 1213, 1214, and 1217 in the 1934 and 1935 catalog as set  #1372 RCT Commodore.  However, both years it only comes with two #1213 passenger coaches, not three as you have. 

Does your engine have the ringing bell in it?  Does it have a pierced brass running board?  Do you know what kind of trucks the passenger cars have?

It is always possible that you have a department store set or that someone added an extra coach along the way to the set.  I am not aware of any cataloged set that has 3 #1213 passenger coaches and an observation.  In any case nice find!

Thank you very much for the info and you are exactly right.  I looked that set up and it is exactly what I have, and yes those are the exact cars I have.   I looked closer at the 3 passenger cars and noticed that only one of them is actually marked on the bottom as 1213, so I think you are right that someone added 2 extra of them to the set.  I agree it was an awsome find and it came with the original engine box & wrapping paper, all original instruction sheets, all cars have their original wrapping paper with the numbers stamped on them and the original transformer...that works....and the engine works great.  Now I would like to find the set box for it somewhere. Thanks so much again for the answer...

I have a set 1372 RTC Commodore from American Flyer that contains engine 3315, tender 3199, baggage car 1214, passenger car 1213 & observatiojn car 1217.  I have the original box for the 3315 engine and brown paper that is stamped with the individual car numbers and tender.  Does anyone know if the individual cars came with their own boxes and if so does anyhave pics of these boxes?  I was also hoping that someone may have the original set box that they could post a pic of  and let me know what numbers are on that box.  I would appreiciate any information on individual boxes and the actual set box.  I would like to post pictures of the set but haven't figured out how to post them on this website.  Maybe someone could expain the process to me.  Thanks so much.  Keith

You indicate that you have the original wrapping paper with the car and tender numbers stamped on them, which to me would indicate that these cars did not have boxes.  There would be no need to stamp the numbers on the paper if there were boxes for these items.  I know that Flyer did wrap some items only in paper and then would stamp the number on the paper.  This was typically done with lithographed cars and smaller cars.  The larger cars, which came wrapped in paper would not have had the numbers stamped on the paper, because the number would be stamped on the outside of the box.

 

I just purchased a nice boxed set that came with individual boxes for the engine and cars, but the tender came with only paper that had the correct number on it.  I am sure this is how it came from the factory.
