Bay Line Railway and Woodland Scenics

I was planning to use a modified version of John Long's Bay Line Railway layout. I think it was originally published in CTT and was reproduced in their layout book. I've got everything I need except the Bascule bridge, and heck, that will make a good Christmas present for myself (this August)[:)]

Has anyone ever set up this layout? In the article, John say's that he hasn't actually set it up yet, just a design.

Finally, I was thinking of trying the Woodland Scenics modeling method. The whole shebang, from risers to plaster cloth. The only layout's I've done so far were just flat on plywood, very 2 dimensional. Is this something that is actually going to make my 3D railroad easier, or am I biting off more than I can chew?

Do you mean the "Belt Line Railway" that was a CTT contest winner? If so, I'm also planning to build a modified version of this layout. Do you know the title of the layout book? What CTT issue is it in, I got the layout idea from the rrtrack download section.

My plan will keep the 12ft width, but the two wings will be 15 and 19 ft in length, the trackwork will be gargraves.

No, I mean the one in chapter 9 of Layout Plans for Toy Trains, published by CTT.

It was also in CTT but I don't know when.


BTW the Belt line railway is in the same book, it's chapter 10 and is also by John Long.

Yes, the Bayline has been built by two people I know of and it went together like the plans. One guy emailed photos and I may have them on disc. It's been a few years. I will try to find them.

The crossing wiring works with the postwar 313 bascule bridge but will not with the LLC bascule bridge as shown in diagrams. it can be worked around by installing a magnetic switch under the LLC bridge verses the mechanical contact in the 313 which the LLC model does not have..

I'm using the accessories I have, and I'm using Gargraves track. I've got it layed out and I'm bending the Gargraves track this weekend. I hope to have it running as 1 loop by Sunday. If everthing flows smoothly I'll then take it apart, work on my scenery and then rewire it is as the plans suggest. I'm not sure if I'll wire it for automatic operation with all of the relays or not. I may just do it a little simpler.

Gargraves track should not be a problem. I should say that the Bayline track geometry is tight in a many areas. If you want the Gargraves track to fit exactly like the plan, the true centerline diameter has to be the same as the true centerline diameter of 031 track in many places. The true centerline diameter of 031 track is 28 1/2".

Yeah, I've been using O-31 curves to help shape the Gargraves.
