Christmas Came a Little Early
Posted by matthewg on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 5:59 PM

Or should I say USPS was a little early. (was expecting it later this week)

Purchased a complete (well sans track, transformer, and boxes) 1503WS set online last week, first postwar locomotive Ive ever owned. I couldn't resist.

Looks pretty regal from that angle.  I can even smell the O-zone.

Love that set. It is an example of Lionel during what I feel was the best years. Built to last and looks great. Clean the wheels and lube the loco, tender and enjoy during the holidays. GTTD

After some cleaning and maintenance I've got her running pretty good.

I need to work on the tender's whistling unit tomorrow,  the solenoid usually gets stuck in the up position.

It's not a solenoid; it's a slugged relay.  They are very likely to stick like that, and also very easy to fix.  Just put a little piece of tape, such as masking tape, between the pole piece and the armature, so that they don't quite touch when the relay operates.

I have one of these sets, the locomotive and tender were all my grandpa got from his uncle, and I collected all the cars for the 1953 set. We ended up with a second locomotive that was like new in the box on ebay.
